Eastern Standard Time, idotherock@yahoo.com writes: I choose the former, and no amount of wishing on my part or anyone else's is going to prompt Liz produce the kind of music most of wish she'd make. Let me clarify then: I wish she'd make good pop music on this record. I want to see her be successful. I want to like the songs she sings. I liked LP and WCSE and EIG equally. I don't long for EIG or days of yore - I love the old stuff don't get me wrong - but I respect Liz's choice to make whatever kind of music she wants to - that is great and I love her for doing what she thinks is best for her - but these songs suck -not compared to EIG - but compared to Jo Jo and Ashlee Simpson and Hillary Duff and even Lindsay Lohan. I'll admit it - I LIKE pop music - a lot - but I turn off better pop stuff than these songs on the radio every day. If she wants to make pop music great - the MUSIC is fine- it's the crappy lyrics that are the problem. I have every confidence in her talent that she could make bubble gum pop but still invoke her talent of descriptive detailed writing to convey a story or a feeling to make the song successful. However, even generally speaking: Even crappy pop radio songs that hit #1 tell some kind of a story - and aren't just the same generic words repeated over and over....(before you jump on me-I know there are exceptions to this)... but think of any great classic song... you connected with it because it told a story or conveyed a feeling...at least that's true for me... Liz can do better ...think of WCI... or Extraordinary... or Rock Me... I know she can... Only speaking for myself here - this isn't a matter of "I hated the Liz Phair record and want her to be cool and indie again - how dare she make another pop record" this is "gee, I like pop music and I love Liz Phair and I think if she wants to be successful she needs to use some of her talent to do better than this - these lyrics suck". I agree with who ever said it already - I hope someone from her camp is reading the posts too and they can work on it to make it better. She had a good deal of success with LP, in that now when I say I like Liz Phair people at least know who I'm referring to - even if they "don't know who Liz Phair IS" ;) really - and know WCI. I think if she wants to be taken seriously in terms of making pop music she needs to have this record be *good* pop music. The whole "I'm going to be honest about just making radio music to be a star" marketing idea turned people off that might have otherwise gave her a chance with an open mind - so now if she puts this out and instead talks about that this music is her "being real" and it is actually good music that people like to hear that will help her out a lot. She's going in a different direction -she's a different person at a different point in her life. Great. We all are. I think people will "forgive" her and not be so critical if this music were actually good. Maybe it will be when the album is released - I think right now it's not. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V8 #42 ***********************************
