Imagine crashing power chords (Extraordinary style), what a shocker this would be after the blandness of Liz Phair. In fact, I've been listening to LP a lot lately, and the only thing that bothers me is that she never takes the songs to the next level. Love/Hate could have been a brilliant rocker, but it's never really clear what the point is. And one of the things that has always made Liz stand apart from other songwriters is that she hits the nail right on the head . . . "And I was standing 6'1'' instead of 5'2'' and I love my life and I hated you . . . " "I dropped him off and I drove on home 'cause secretly I'm timid" "I'm lining up six or seven good jobs, my hair's looking great and my friends are all snobs, but I don't have my man and I don't have my dog and I don't have very much fun, and that's one less thing on my mind" Sure, there is something very ironic about all of theses lyrics but nothing ambiguous. They're all very pointed and particular and seen within a certain context. What I would really like see is Liz expound on the last album and keep a lot of the overproduction. But this time, make the lyrics count and use the production to create a certain sense of . . . well . . . anything. I know they don't get along but I wish she would team up with Steve Albini. james ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V8 #21 ***********************************
