Foxx" Subject: [support-system] RE: support-system-digest V7 #186 I don't listen to that much new music, but Mirah's is definitely on the list. And I'm also kind of partial to Gwen Stefani's recent pop-is-god solo debut. As for the Liz Phair album that everyone's been whining about for the past few years... I'll put in my two cents: I think everyone was just expressing disappointment at having waiting five years for any new material by their favorite artist only to have her release something that could've just as easily been made by any top 20 female musician with similar producers. It's not the end of the world, and I suppose the album was ok for its purpose; but, yeah, it was just... really unnerving to see someone with so much talent surrendering her voice for record sales. It's, of course, 100% her right to sell out her talent as such, and I'm not condemning her for it; I just wish she had released more than three solid albums before we lost her. Even without the selling-out factor, her songwriting has deteriorated remarkably, and... it's probably not coming back. Liz Phair is just... very disappointing now, and... I feel like that disappointment is the general sentiment of the list. And it's nice to vent that every now and then because... man, I used to love Liz Phair so much. - -Mark (And it probably sounds a little insane to dismiss so quickly Liz's 2003 work after praising Gwen Stefani's new album, but... Gwen Stefani's pop is insane, fun, and surprisingly unique. Liz Phair's music now is none of these things, and... Gwen Stefani has considerably less talent to work with.) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 2004 11:36:33 -0500 From: Subject: [support-system] 2004 faves here's my favorites: Jason Forrest - The Unrelenting Songs Rufus Wainwright - Want Two Magnetic Fields - s/t Brian Wilson - Smile Secret machines - Now Here is Nowhere Mary Lou Lord - baby Blue Mirah - C'mon Miracle Modest Mouse - GOod News for people who love bad news Feist - Let It Die Patti Smith - Trampin' (didn't like it at first - but fell in love after seeing her live) Hayden - Elk Lake Serenade Le Tigre - This Island Tanya Donelly - WHiskey Tango Ghosts Juliana Hatfield - In Exile Deo.. (again - didn't think i liked it at ALL at first - but i popped it in a few days ago and was floored by how much i loved all the songs) Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose THE BIG ONES: Courtney Love - America's Sweetheart Scissor Sisters - s/t PJ Harvey - uh huh her Neil Young - Greatest Hits (i know - old songs - but this is the best fucking collection - EVER!) and finally: STARS - Set Yourself on Fire - this album has seriously changed my life this year. The big fat "YOU DISAPPOINTED ME, THEREFORE YOU SUCK" AWARDS go to: Lisa Loeb - The Way it Really Is The STreets - a grand don't come for free Cyndi Lauper - At Last (i tried to like it - i finally had to admit to myself - i just hate the songs she chose to cover) K.D. Lang - Hymns From the 49th Parallel (to me, this album sounded like a commercial for like, Niagara Falls or Ontario Place in certain sections. she has a great voice - but some of the songs just struck me as too cheesed up. Bjork - Medulla ( i know i SHOULD like this...but hell - it just reminds me of Vespertine pt 2 - she already did the "tiny sounds magnefied" thing - it's starting to get overdone. i found (for the first time) saying to myself that her sound is beginning to feel redundant.) Matthew Sweet - Living Things (what's up with the "Lion King-esque" opening...? Good GOD. The writer from Amazon.com who wrote "his best album since Girlfriend" needs to be beaten with a bag of elton john CDs. The Donnas - Gold Medal... again - it's not a bad album, and i like the little garage-ish thing they are kind of leaning towards on certain songs..but again - it used to be fun - but now it's just getting redundant. like how many fun hair-metal-ramones-tip-of-the-hat albums can they make? you can only say "hey ho let's go" so many times. that's it, dan "People have got to defy the FCC. I've decided that I'm not going to care if radio won't play me." - - Liz Phair, 1993 "I'm totally trying to [get new fans]. It's a wall I really want to break through. I'd like to hear more radio people like me, you know?" - - Liz Phair, 2003 [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment with a content-type header it could not parse.] [Content-Type: null; name="reply"] ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V7 #187 ************************************
