I wonder when the rest of the Lilith Fair crowd is going to pose for Stuff, Penthouse, etc? Show was part of the Maybeline (sp?) tour, which given the corporate nature, was fine - and the bands were all great. First up was Charlotte Martin - just her, a piano, and a great voice. And great songs - kinda what I always thought Tori Amos could be but never seemed to acheive. 2 songs into her set, and I was sold. Katy Rose was also fine - tight band, good songs, great voice. She is soooo young in person - almost a made-up little girl - if she keeps this talent and discipline as she gets older (stays off drugs, etc), she may be big. The Cardigans were a bit down energy-wise, but fine nonetheless. I'm so used to ignoring the lead-off bands at these medium venue shows (who the hell is Wheat?), but they were all great, and Katy and Charlotte made new fans. As for Liz, I was very happy. She was in great voice, and played a great set. I saw the recent posting here about her headset and the sound quality - whatever might have been lost in sound was made up with her energy - I sincerely think she feels looser up there not tied to a mike. She seems to respond to the audience more than any singer I've seen, and the headset lets her move around, dance - have fun, which those who remember stage-fright Liz know is important. Anyway, while the Hampton Beach Ballroom had sound problems all night (Charlotte was going to kill someone, and thanked the sound people at the end of her set through gritted teeth), I thought she sounded great - she is not afraid to let rip w/ her voice and even hit some of those high notes (I love her early songs, but I think one problem w/ them was that she did not write the songs to her voice then - now no problem). As for her songs, I came to Liz w/ Supernova, so I enjoy these more recent rocking songs, and she mixed in a lot of her early stuff seamlessly (loved the crowd yelling out "secretly I'm timid" ). By the way, it is, well, different, to be in a hall full of young women singing along to HWC. Who says a singer can't affect the culture! ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V7 #153 ************************************
