She looked happy and played a very, really long, great set. Lots of exile stuff mixed in with some whip smart, (chopsticks and supernova), wcse songs and stuff from LP. I didn't' keep time, but I'm almost tempted to say that she played for almost two hours. She played a ton of guyville songs, and I'd guess at least 3 or more songs from each of the other albums (I didn't write them down). {Ken there were two articles in the Lansing State journal newspaper about her -and they gave out free copies of the newspaper at the show - but it was inaccurate. (i think the website is lsj.com) it said that she sold 200,000 copies of girlsyounds and that's what got her career started. good grief. i normally file articles about her - i threw that paper out (in the recycle bin, of course).} It was an amazing show. I didn't think that the crowd even knew who she was when I got there or during the show, but when she left the stage, it appeared from where I was (in the back) so did most of the crowd. Which *really* surprised me, because blues traveler, who I thought was more well known, took the stage next. And the crowd seemed to be lots of families, older folks (40-60), teens, and then folks my age (20-40), in that order. I almost didn't go, but am so glad that I did. It was the old Liz, who it appears has transformed into a new Liz that seems to embrace the old with the new and it's all who she is now and she loves it and is proud of it. (Good for you, Liz.) It appeared that she didn't stick with the set list, as she kept saying Dino - - let's do this one next or (to the band) I'm going to play this song next instead, OK? She told funny Liz stories, asked the audience how many were married, never been married, used to be married but aren't now, ever want to get married again (she waved her hand and said eh-like maybe maybe not) and finally how many folks plan to vote for bush in November, which was pretty funny. Then she played polyester bride. Then later she asked someone -I don't know if it was a techie or manager or what -- "hey can I sing favorite underwear here tonight or will I get in trouble? Is that OK? can I do it? Or not? Is it OK to sing it tonight? Here? are you sure?" She sounded really concerned like it had to be oked by someone other than her. Whoever she asked apparently replied something like "i don't know, if you want to, fuck it, go ahead". which she thought was OK (and repeated to the audience) so she sang it. she tried to dance around her guitar for that one, but poor Liz, she just looks awkward when she tries to do that sexy sway she tries to do. why would she have to ask permission to sing her own song? It doesn't have swear words in it, and that couldn't be the issue anyway because she didn't change to g rated lyrics or leave our fuck from any song she did like she has sometimes before AND she *opened* with a rocking version of flower. So public decency couldn't have been the issue. I don't get it. and what part of the team is responsible for selling her stuff at her shows? i asked at both artist merchandise booths about Liz stuff before she went on and the head guy (he said he was, anyway) told me he was still waiting for her stuff it hadn't arrived yet (this was like 20 minutes before she went on). i checked again both places after her show and the same guy laughed and told me lots of people were asking but nothing ever arrived for them to sell. Wtf??? But -- all in all, a great show. I'm really glad I went. If it's a preview for her cwa tour, wow - go. I hope it is - I wasn't going to see that, but now just might. I'm glad she's still out there -- hanging in there and havin fun. Liz is so cool. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jul 2004 23:48:52 -0500 From: "Liz J" Subject: [support-system] Liz/Rumsfeld Explanation From "The Moderate Independent," as found at Mesmerizing: "She said that she actually used to jump on a trampoline in Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfelds backyard (I didn't even want to know what that meant and assumed something innocent enough.)" Rumsfeld went to New Trier as well, although years before Liz obvioulsy. I assume that he was either a neighbor of the Phairs or a family acquaintance. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
