Liz went on around 10:40 and had a lot of good crowd banter going on (I mention some in my show run-down). She seemed very talkative and in a good mood tonight. The band played well and the show rocked except for some annoying reverb in a couple of songs. For the fashion-curious Liz wore a red tank-top with horizontal slits all the way down the front (very revealing) and it looked like jeans with a skirt over top, but I could have been just not seeing it very well as I was not close to the stage. I was the one on the floor with the pen and notepad writing down her setlist like a weirdo. :-) The show run-down: Flower (the new rocking mix) Polyester Bride Rock Me (with the guitar as a prop, how stupid-looking) Johnny Feelgood Uncle Alvarez My Bionic Eyes Divorce Song 6'1" (Liz turned around to walk back to the piano and said, "Well, goodnight." The crowd complains and she goes, "Funny, you're the first group that got that joke. Everyone else was sort of like, 'oh, ok.'" She goes to piano and I scream for Canary a few times to no avail.) Chopsticks Extraordinary Love/Hate (I guess someone asked her to play South Dakota because she sang, "Born in South Dakota," and then went on to play the next song. Help Me Mary Red Light Fever Never Said Favorite (again, stroking the prop of a guitar) (Liz tells us she'll be playing solo and gives us the choice of Hurricane Cindy or Stratford-On-Guy. The crowd clearly cheers its brains out for SOG.) Stratford-On-Guy (solo) Why Can't I? Supernova ENCORE (Liz came out and started to do hand puppets in the lights on the stage. Her guitar wasn't ready yet so she decided to lie down in a sexy manner on the speaker/light thing in the front of the stage. She sang a few lines of "Hey Big Spender" or whatever the song is called, with the drummer accompanying her, and then got up again to play.) Mesmerizing (Band introductions.) Fuck And Run H.W.C. (For some reason they started to turn the house lights on during H.W.C. and mid-song Liz remarked, "They turned on the lights to embarrass you.") Afterwards I waited outside for her with my concert-buddy. It was drizzling and cold but a crowd of about 20 of us gathered. After the security guy told us all to leave a couple dozen times, and then made us form a single file line, Liz finally came out. I took a picture for the guy in front of me in line and got Liz to sign my Juvenilia/alia cover. I didn't say anything to her, I just smiled and I must say she really has beautiful eyes. She talked to most everyone in line, which surprised me as the weather was so lousy, but she had some guy holding an umbrella for her so I guess she didn't really mind too much. It still was cool of her to not just screw us over and go into the bus. She even apologized for making us wait so long and said when she heard there was a line outside waiting for her she came out. Anyway, after she signed my stuff my friend and I left as we were freezing our butts off. There were no comeandgetit CDs that I saw, but I bought a shirt and some buttons. The official setlists were all given away by the time I tried to get one, oh well. I'm so glad I got to go to the show. It was a blast! Yeah! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Apr 2004 03:52:12 -0500 From: "Jim" Subject: Re: [support-system] Liz Philly Show Review Hey Just and the rest of the List, You just beat me home. By your description of the signing line events, you have dark hair and were with a tall thin guy with dark hair. I saw you, and you gave a little scream when you walked away from the barricade. So did I, I must admit. I was the guy at the very end wearing the flamed black & gray head-cap. The show was just amazing. It was my first ever Liz show, and I was floored. Liz was on top of her game tonight. It was the best show I have ever been witness to. I was (pardon the pun) mesmerized by her the entire time. I had a great vantage point from the bar area. I even got a pic of her playing "chopsticks". The "waiting" line sucked because as Just mentioned, it was raining. But Liz came out and spent time with each of us. She signed my ticket and posed for a picture with me, my arm around her back. She was just so friendly. I told her the show was amazing, she thanked me and then I asked for a picture. She said "Oh sure!" Liz walked right up to me at the barricade, I put my arm around her, the picture was taken and I thanked her again. She said "Oh! You're very welcome!" We smiled at each other and I walked off like an embarrased little school boy. I was amazed at how tiny she actually is. I'm 5' 10" 220 and she must be like 5'4" 90. But she is just so adorable. Ack...I don't know what else to say. I'll post and/or send the pics as soon as I get them developed. There were no Comeandgetit CD's available. The only offering was an autographed "Liz Phair" CD for $20. And Kim, I called your cell when I got there, around 7pm and you didn't answer. I hope you had a great time. I most assuredly did. Oh, and Wheat sucked. That's about as descriptive as I can be, except to mention that the band broke down their own equipment. That says volumes. It seemed like all the other girls were there with guys. I feel the need to add that my friend was not a Liz fan before going to the show, but she really enjoyed the show, except for when Liz wasn't playing guitar. She wants to get some of Liz's albums now, so I turned a fan! Yeah! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Apr 2004 08:35:34 -0500 From: "John A. The Electric Factory is a club in downtown Philly, converted from old industrial building. It probably holds 3,000, or so, all standing room with the over 21 crowd on huge balconies all around the sides and back. The line formed late, as it was pouring rain all day in Philly. I was about thirty people back. Through the first opening act, the crowd on the floor didn't go more than ten people deep. I was worried and embarressed that Liz would be playing to a near empty club. Once Wheat hit the stage there was no problem. The place was nearly full. If you've not heard Wheat, they are an indie band from the Boston area. Their single, "Met a Girl" is worth about $1,000,000. It's the most catching thing I've ever heard and have been listening to their album for the past few months. So, the lights go out, the crowd goes nuts, and wierd lighting a fog appear. Spooky, rumbling music comes on, and out comes the band. Liz comes shortly after and begins a rockin' version of Flower. People are going nuts, girls screaming, they love it. For those who keep track, and we all do, Liz wore jeans with shiny silver stiching up the sides, and a kahki green mini-skirt made from army-style pants on top. I don't recall seeing any jewelry. Her hair was long and flowing (sigh). She wore black, velvety, pointed slippers and a red, tight, sleeveless top with slits all across the front. Presumeably, there was some sheer, skin-colored material covering the important areas 'cause I was right up front and couldn't see squat, so..... The set list, in approximate order, included, Flower Polyester Bride My Bionic Eyes Uncle Alvarez Extraordinary 6'1" Rock Me Chopsticks "umm...which pedal is it" Johnny Feelgood Divorce Song "...sadly, this one came true..." Why Can't I Help Me Mary Love Hate Transmission Stratford-on-Guy "..would you guys rather hear Hurricane Cindy (clap, clap) or Stratford-on-Guy (YEAAHHHH!!!!) Never Said Red Light Fever Fuck and Run Supernova HWC "...there's one more, so don't leave....we're gonna turn the lights on to embarrass you!" ..and yes, it was embarrassing to hear HWC, house lights on, shoulder to shoulder with teens, college girls, 30-somethings, and everything in between all around. Oh well, I just shook my head side to side and sang along. I'm not sure about the song order, and I'm not positive that Supernova was in the encore. Hopefully, someone else will have the proper setlist but this was the rough order of the show. Liz sang with a headset microphone the whole time. She often stooded her guitar on end, held the neck, danced around it. She did some very seductive dancing that made my heart stop, then hurt, then feel good. At one point, she laid down across the monitor and she and the band improvised some 1920's slinky showtune of which I can't remember the name. My favorite moment was during, I think, 6'1". She and the bass player (Joe something) did a face-to-face jam on the opening riff. Later on, they did a guitarrist/bassist back-to-back that was damn hysterical. Liz was lauginging and Joe was loving it. He was having a great time up there and, while the whole band was silent, he lip-synched along to Fuck and Run. I got the feeling he was a Liz fan before he joined her band. Chopsticks was played by Liz, solo, at the keyboard. Stratford-on-Guy was done solo-electric. The girls in front went absolutely crazy for the EIG stuff. It was strange to hear all of the new songs mixed in with all of the old songs. While I loved the show, I guess I miss the small shows of days past. I think about the 1999 college tour all the time...how special those few club shows felt. One could sense the urgency as the Whitechocolatespaceegg era came to an end. Those who were at that final cinco-de-mayo show in State College wondered whether Liz would ever play live again, whether she'd trade stardom for motherhood and marriage. They were a weary, enthusiastic band playing for 300 people in a tiny club in the middle of nowhere. Buddy Judge, in suit and hat...the sound tech taking the stage for "Break on Through"...the half-naked, last-night-of-the-tour antics with David Mead's crew. It was as if, after that last show, each musican left town on a separate bus, guitar case in hand, having played their hearts out. Maybe that's all in my head and maybe I tend to romanticize that summer....my last few months of freedom. I dunno, but it was good to get out to a show and see Liz, again. - -Ginz _________________________________________________________________ Limited-time offer: Fast, reliable MSN 9 Dial-up Internet access FREE for 2 months! http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/dialup&pgmarket=en-us&ST=1/go/onm00200361ave/direct/01/ ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V7 #77 ***********************************
