  I have read in here before the comparisons people make between PJ Harvey 
and Liz..and have posted my opinions. As far as album sales - the difference 
between them (now) is their respective audiences and their production companies. 
I think everyone will agree that PJ has stayed closer to her original 
writing-recording self than Liz has. PJ did throw her hat into the commercial ring 
with her most recent (2000) "Stories" CD which did very well, and earned her 
world-wide recognition. "Stories" appealed to a wider audience no doubt because it 
was more radio friendly, upbeat, and not nearly as dark and edgy as some of 
PJ's early work. PJ also toured very hard - even opening for U2 and then doing 
the annual UK summer rock festivals to promote her work.
  But PJ's audience has remained very much the same the past 10 years since 
she has made little attempt to openly find another one. Unlike Liz, she has 
worked with other groups - Sparklehorse, Queens of the Stoneage - which actually 
has enhanced her creative audience while keeping her music pretty much her 
own. Like Liz, she has provided music for soundtracks but hasn't become a model 
yet.
  It's funny, because I have always linked the two together - Liz with her 
EIG, and PJ with her "Dry" and "Rid of Me"..same period of time, similar 
themes..incredible music for the time. Over time, they parted company - imagine PJ 
recording "Polyester Bride" or more recently, "Why Can't I?"..Or Liz recording 
"The Whores Hustle"?  But it happened, and I don't have a problem with it.
  The only result, personally, is that I am not that inclined to see Liz in 
concert anymore. Sure, she throws out some of the old songs, but the new ones 
are clearly so different for me. As for PJ, I will travel continents to go to 
her shows (UK, New Zealand, across the country) since she still evokes the 
original feelings I had for her early music. Liz is still "fun" in concert - but 
PJ's creative moods and different styles are simply more interesting to me and 
obviously to her record company.

it reached #1 earlier this year.  that chart is basically for songs that
have been on the charts for a long time and keep getting airplay. i call
it the "HOLY FUCK THEY WONT STOP PLAYING THIS SONG" chart.

pj is probably a steady seller whereas liz has a fanbase that rushes out
and purchases copies as soon as they are released...so record stores don't
order as many copies.

Michael-

I wanted to write to support your choice of anti-lurkdom. Your post was heartfelt, well-written, and I happen to agree with almost
everything in it. For me as well, Liz was someone that I connected with at a very crucial point in my life more than 10 years ago,
and she has been a major influence on me musically and personally. That is why I am so very disappointed in her recent musical
efforts, image control (or lack thereof) and her cavalier attitude toward her longtime fans. I did not even buy the last album or go
to see her recent shows.  Someone burned me a copy of Liz Phair, I played it twice, and then put it away with sadness. Considering
that I own nearly every other song she has ever written and listen to them regularly, I hosted the Chicago LizPhest in 2000 and I
have seen every previous tour that she has participated in, my distance from her now is remarkable. That said, I truly believe the
recent backlash against her is ultimately a testament to how important she was musically to so many people. And because I am
basically a hopeful person, I am willing to wait and watch to see what Ms. Phair decides to do next.
