The bottom line is that having a sexy image has helped more careers than it has hindered, and taking the high moral ground is not a luxury that most female artists can afford. It might be nice if they could, but this is the real world. I think it is inevitable that an intelligent woman is going to concede that (quote) "Sex definitely sells" then move straight on to more sophisticated reasoning to defend her position. But the sophisticated reasoning is more about how you sell it to yourself, IMO - you may or may not convince the audience. Personally, I can't say I'm impressed by some aspects of Liz's current image, but she's a grown-up so she gets to play with fire. So when Liz is asked about the way she is portrayed, she's either got to admit it's a naked (sic) attempt to capture the mass market, or else she's going to try to rationalise it and cloak it in PC motives. But then, which us hasn't had to make choices in our lives and found ourselves rewriting history to justify our own actions? Is that self-denial, or just human nature? (Of course, whether the "Liz Phair" pics are sexy or not is a subjective matter. Personally, and with one exception, I don't like them much - they've made a beautiful woman look ordinary, IMO. However, from the reaction of friends, I'm in a minority). I don't read every article published about Liz (and I don't always trust their selective quotations), but I don't detect as many inconsistencies in her statements as Emil does. She has always struck me as very genuine in radio interviews posted on the net, and I am always impressed by her spirited defences (sometimes more than by the subjects she's defending). And if she loses a tussle with her label and seems uncomfortable defending the outcome, that's not too surprising. So much for my intellectual / PC take on the matter. So what, you ask, is my position on the Paris hotel pics? Well, I might have preferred not to see the American flag in some of them.
