In a recent post, I mused that the title "Stratford-on-guy" might be a mysterious reference to William Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-on-Avon. Does anyone have a better theory, or does anyone actually know the answer to the question "Where did this title come from?" Given the lyrics, it would make more sense to me if I discovered that there is a suburb of Chicago called Stratford. Some of Liz's song titles reference places (e.g., Crater Lake, Nashville, Alice Springs). Her lyrics also contain occasional references to peculiarly English things (e.g., the width of the English Channel, "the changing of Her Majesty's Guards"). FYI, Stratford-on-Avon is a medieval town famous only because Shakespeare was born there. It is visited each year by hundreds of thousands of tourists who are drawn by the Royal Shakespeare Company (our premier theatre company is based there) and the quaint buildings (many of them 500-600 years old). If her parents were culture vultures (I think her mother was in the arts), Liz may have been taken there when she lived in England. - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
