Slade made a tiny bit of a splash here in the U.S. in 1984 with their album "Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply." they had a couple of MTV hits (kinda) in "Run Runaway" and "My Oh My." as it was 1984 and i was 12 years old, i thought they were just another one of those somewhat cheesy but kinda cool British bands that MTV introduced to the world. it wasn't until much later that i found out that they had a deeper history and originally wrote the hits that Quiet Riot covered, "Cum On Feel The Noize" and "Mama We're All Crazee Now" (the former a much bigger hit than the latter). other christmas favorites of mine: "Linus And Lucy" -- Vince Guaraldi "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" -- Dexter Gordon "Fairytale of New York" -- the Pogues the "December" album by George Winston, although i liked it a lot more 13 years ago when i first heard it ~ i've since heard it far too often ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Dec 2003 14:57:33 -0500 From: Exile217@aol.com Subject: [support-system] liz stylist waverrider commented: >If I were a betting man, AND I AM, I'd say that Liz was >working with a >stylist since the Gap commercials. so then i remembered something i saw in "american salon" magazine (dec 03) at work recently. this is more about hair styling than fashion. . . but anyways: Phair-Haired Liz Phair wanted a new look to coincide with the launch of her first album in five years and turned to two of Hollywood's hippest hairstylists, Lucie Doughty from the Fred Segal Agency and Lanni Reeves from the Magnet Agency. The duo obliged, creating a fresh style for the princess of indie rock that was natural yet edgy. "Liz lives by the ocean and likes the sun-kissed look, so I used Paul Mitchell The Color and Dual Purpose Bleach to lighten up the textured edges of Lanni's haircut, creating a frayed look filled with movement and dimension," says Doughty, who's also a Paul Mitchell premier associate and educator of the year. She IS the music, so I worked with the feeling I got from her." -k.d. i'll see if i can scan the pic/article sometime this week. anyone who collects that sort of thing, (ken?) let me know if you want to put it up. liz b. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Dec 2003 18:15:46 -0500 From: "Jim" Subject: Re: [support-system] groovy Xmas tunes Paul, Slade had a popular re-emergence in the States in the late 80's. Quiet Riot covered their "Come On Feel The Noise", which drew attention to the band. This subsequently provided them a new outlet for a few videos as I recall...however I don't know if they recorded a new album. Chrissie Hynde at her best - a song about separation from a loved one, and the only Christmas song I know that you would want to play all year round. Many people are surprised when I tell them this is a Xmas song, although lines like "It must be Christmas time" are a bit of a give-away. 2000 Miles - Coldplay. I haven't heard this cover, which is very recent. Download instructions are here: http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=musicNews&storyID=4018948. Merry Christmas Everybody - Slade. Slade was a UK band from the 1970s - I don't know if they made any impact in the USA. Merry Christmas Everybody is far-and-away the most popular Xmas song in England - it is played endlessly on the radio through December and (strangely) no one seems to get sick of it. It would be considered *ESSENTIAL* in any UK compilation of Xmas songs, so if you're making one and can find an MP3 download, it is worth the effort (I cannot say the same about the rest of Slade's output). Not to be confused with Merry Christmas Everyone by Shaking' Stevens. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day - Wizzard (maybe credited to "Roy Wood and Wizzard"). Glam rockers who probably didn't register in the USA. Likely to appear in any UK Xmas compilation, unfortunately. Find it at http://www.mp3sweet.com/songs.html?album=5440&artist=3795 December Will be Magic Again - Kate Bush The following have probably been nominated already - I didn't check... I Believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake. I never get tired of this one, except at Christmas. So This is Christmas - John Lennon. Ditto Lonely This Christmas - Elvis. Ditto Do They Know Its Christmas - Band Aid Little Saint Nick - Beach Boys Bah, humbug! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Dec 2003 18:16:52 -0500 From: "Jim" Subject: Re: [support-system] recent x-mas posts, etc. Excellent Chris!
