Chrissie Hynde at her best - a song about separation from a loved one, and the only Christmas song I know that you would want to play all year round. Many people are surprised when I tell them this is a Xmas song, although lines like "It must be Christmas time" are a bit of a give-away. 2000 Miles - Coldplay. I haven't heard this cover, which is very recent. Download instructions are here: http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=musicNews&storyID=4018948. Merry Christmas Everybody - Slade. Slade was a UK band from the 1970s - I don't know if they made any impact in the USA. Merry Christmas Everybody is far-and-away the most popular Xmas song in England - it is played endlessly on the radio through December and (strangely) no one seems to get sick of it. It would be considered *ESSENTIAL* in any UK compilation of Xmas songs, so if you're making one and can find an MP3 download, it is worth the effort (I cannot say the same about the rest of Slade's output). Not to be confused with Merry Christmas Everyone by Shaking' Stevens. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day - Wizzard (maybe credited to "Roy Wood and Wizzard"). Glam rockers who probably didn't register in the USA. Likely to appear in any UK Xmas compilation, unfortunately. Find it at http://www.mp3sweet.com/songs.html?album=5440&artist=3795 December Will be Magic Again - Kate Bush The following have probably been nominated already - I didn't check... I Believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake. I never get tired of this one, except at Christmas. So This is Christmas - John Lennon. Ditto Lonely This Christmas - Elvis. Ditto Do They Know Its Christmas - Band Aid Little Saint Nick - Beach Boys Bah, humbug! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Dec 2003 19:21:15 -0500 From: Catherine Molanphy Subject: Re: [support-system] groovy Xmas tunes Thanks, Paul Spinks, for giving the UK background on the Slade track. Indeed, my brother acquired it from a UK Christmas compilation, so for us, at the time, it was a funky novelty... I didn't realize it was so ubiquitous over there though. I still love it. > I Believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake. I never get tired of this one, > except at Christmas. Definitely a goodie. The line about "what at Christmas we get we deserve" kills me every time. A couple of others I thought of: - --White Christmas by the Drifters featuring Clyde McPhatter If early 60's doo-wop gives you hives, then skip this one. But I think it's fab... really the only version of that song that I enjoy at all. Ol' Bing never does much for me. - --A Christmas Carol by Tom Lehrer Those of you familiar with Mr. Lehrer will know what to expect... his typically dry satire to piano accompaniment. If you are as fed up with this sickening holiday as I am, this song will make you smile ruefully. ho ho hum, Catherine ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #339 ************************************
