(and, for those keeping score, liz's album is on 9 of the 16 lists posted so far. about a 55% rating, and the most commonly-named title on all the combined lists. white stripes are #2. i also don't think anyone has mentioned jewel's new record on any list so far. i didn't say any of this was fascinating. i just said it was interesting.) o ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2003 07:38:19 -0500 From: "Jody Chassereau" Subject: [support-system] Re: Leona I'm hoping to make the drive up from Charleston to see LP in March if I can... She's another pottymouth girl, though more like Alanis than Liz, and she's back after a marriage / motherhood break. I haven't heard the new album myself - anyone able to comment? Her discography: > 1996 Sour Pie [EP] > 1997 Stuff > 2003 Home Is Where www.allmusic.com said - 'One of the most compelling "angry young woman" releases of 1997 was Holly McNarland's Stuff, which gives the impression that the Canadian singer/songwriter lives and breathes dysfunction. Expressive and convincing, McNarland packs a strong emotional punch on "The Box," "Coward," "Elmo" and other tortured, introspective offerings that leave little or no room for optimism.' Seems that folks stick to the topic for the most part. I've subscribed to lists for a lot of bands where 90% of the content has nothing to do with that band, or with music, even. Here is a link to a year-end wrap-up by the music critics for Slate (a unit of Microsoft, I know, I know). One of them mentions "Red Light Fever" and "Little Digger" favorably, another has "Liz Phair" as the # 1 record of the year. Really. http://slate.msn.com/id/2092531/entry/0/ Sorry if someone else has already posted this. The only one with which I'm familiar (and am *very* fond of) is the Waitresses tune. My brother makes a xmas compilation every few years, and I'm submitting your list to him for some new ideas. The Otis "white christmas" particularly intrigues me... I've been meaning to add some more otis to my musical diet. Here's my list of great holiday jams: "Merry Christmas Everybody" by Slade (this track is the absolute BOMB) "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by yeah, Band-Aid "Let It Snow" by Ella Fitzgerald "Gaudete" by Steeleye Span There are others but that's all I can think of right now... - --Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2003 23:52:58 -0500 From: Jase Subject: [support-system] Top 10 list I've really enjoyed reading everyone's top 10 album lists so far. I'm glad it's become an annual tradition on the list. I found it to be a fairly lackluster year for new music, so I'm hoping to get some ideas of new bands and artists to check out from everyone's lists. I thought this was going to be an incredible year, but neither the PJ Harvey or Courtney Love albums emerged and a few others I was looking forward to ended up being disappointments. That said, here's my own top 10 for 2003: 01. Liz Phair - comeandgetit (EP) 02. The Pernice Brothers - Yours, Mine and Ours 03. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell 04. Loveless - Gift to the World 05. Throwing Muses - s/t 06. Wire - Send 07. Kristin Hersh - The Grotto 08. The White Stripes - Elephant 09. Peaches - Fatherfucker 10. Guided By Voices - Earthquake Glue I do like Liz's new album, but I've played _comeandgetit_ at least twice as often and probably more than anything else released this year. "Jeremy Engle" is easily among the best songs Liz has written, and the studio version of "Bouncer's Conversation" is pretty damn great as well. I might be ranking the Loveless album a little higher than I should. I've only owned it for a few weeks; it may not hold up as well six months from now. But damn, if it isn't great to hear Jen Trynin's awesome guitar work again. I just wish she'd also contributed to the songwriting, although what's here is rather good as it is. The White Stripes album has held up better than I expected it to; either I really am too cynical or I wasn't giving them enough credit in the first place. The new Peaches album doesn't have a single track as memorable as "Fuck the Pain Away" or "Lovertits," but I think it's more consistent than _The Teaches of Peaches_ was. I also liked the new albums by the Rapture, Cat Power, the Distillers, and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. I'm most looking forward to Courtney Love's new album in the new year; "Mono" has proven she can still deliver the goods. Also anticipating new albums from PJ Harvey, Michael Penn, Fiona Apple, Sonic Youth and Interpol.
