But if the meaning is lost in the translation, > it's futile. While I agree with the sentiment that I think the original poster was trying to convey, he/she mangled the metaphor. The tool shouldn't have been the giant blunt object, but rather the target. "nailing the song" should equal "trying to hit a barn door" or something like that. Not using a sledgehammer... I don't think they were trying to criticize her performance, rather the song itself. The song is the target. > Anyway, what I want to know is what the consensus is on "Little Digger". Do > most people like it because it really puts the point across or hate it > because (from what I can make of the metaphor) it's obvious? *Consensus* is exactly what's missing on that song. Many people, here on this list and "out there" in the world cite it as their fave song on the new album. Others (me included), not so much. It would take me a few paragraphs to tell you why... - --Catherine, sort of back from the dead ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Dec 2003 03:03:56 -0500 From: Catherine Molanphy Subject: [support-system] false alarm... Okay, that "private show" thingie just seems to be part of some "Women In Rock" concert series. You'll see info about it at the official website, I think... sorry, I thought I had the skinny on something exclusive, but as it turns out, not so much. - --Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Dec 2003 12:50:48 -0800 (PST) From: Emil Breton Subject: Re: [support-system] large blunt objects, Little Digger I'm with the naysayers re: "Little Digger". It was one of, like, 3 songs I dug when I heard the new album, but now that I've got my hands on a bootleg of a recent show, I feel confident saying the following: The sentiment of the song ("someday I hope you can understand") is clear as a bell and makes perfect sense (although when my girlfriend heard it, she asked, "What is this, Redbook? Of *course* he's gonna understand, someday..."). But when you hear this song and all the other new ones in her live set, they stick out like a sore thumb. Why? Because the melodies -- which are indeed 'lovely' -- are completely normal, to the point of being predictable and boring, and the lyrics are so direct that they become pretty much ignorable on repeat listens. Whereas her older material (and I'm talkin' straight through whitechocolatespaceegg, people -- not just 1993) has angles and strange metaphors and goofy chords and odd structures; they're still fascinating years later. The same cannot be said for the new album; it's use-once-and-destroy plastic, if you ask me. Just my opinion, of course -- Emil __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hey Jeremy, Before I apologize for causing half of the world's problems because I have an affinity for women, I was just wondering if you ever said anything positive on this list? I have yet to see anything. Maybe you could fill me in? Do most people like it because it > really puts the point across or hate it because > (from what I can make of the metaphor) it's obvious? Yes, Little Digger is very obvious. So is "Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy regrets losing girl". "Imagine" has been knocked for being "obvious". But in another sense Little Digger is no way obvious. The subject matter is so unusual - I can't think of any other songs that address this issue. And that is one of the things I really like about Liz - she finds angles that others miss completely. If you don't like the song, at least give her credit for trying something different. I do wonder if Little Digger appeals mainly to those with kids (like me) and passes over the heads of the rest. Trying to imagine the protective feelings of a parent towards a child is like trying to imagine being in love for the first time - just not possible. And if you've brought about a situation that may hurt your child, the guilt must be horrendous - also impossible to imagine if you have not been there, but Liz tries to explain it anyway - "I've done the damage, the damage is done / I pray to God that I'm the damaged one / In all these grown-up complications that you don't understand / I hope you can, someday / I hope you can".
