PG13 subjective and it gets things wrong. It's > bad at handling subtle material (e.g., Blazing Saddles). Basically, it's a > blunt instrument. Unfortunately, it's the only guide a parent has. exile in guyville is a record meant to be bought by 13 year old girls and listened to in secret... PS - yeah - i agree - the new version of FLOWER is by far the most superior live rendition of the song yet. well....i like the one with the list member who got up on stage too in chicago..that's a sweet version as well.. ;) - but this new version - holy shit....red hot beautiful! dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 06:26:50 -0800 (PST) From: Valerie Barry Subject: [support-system] paul's daughter, kids music i agree that censorship sucks, and find the current trend of altering music, movies, etc. scary. it certainly is a slippery slope. but kudos to you, paul, for trying to find a responsible way to expose your daughter to great music, and responding to/encouraging her interests. you sound like a great dad. not having kids, i don't know anything about PG-13 versions. but my first thought when i read your post is, if you can't find those versions and (understandably) aren't comfortable with the possibility that your eight-year-old might sing along to "flower" and play it for her friends, causing parents to freak out...if you have the means, why not make a cool compilation CD for your daughter? you could take the most appropriate songs from her catalog, make her a cool CD cover. what a cool gift from dad that would be! speaking of kids music, there was a short article in the most recent "utne reader" (taken from a punk magazine, forgot which one) about the growing demand for cool kids music, now that the hipsters are procreating. they mentioned a compilation called "the bottle let me down" put out by bloodshot records (americana label - sandra, do you have it?) that i'm going to give at all future baby showers. i think it would be really cool if liz did a children's record. i love the "tra-la-la" cover, and i think it would be a fun project. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Subject: [support-system] hurricane cindy question for mike K: did she do the older, longer version of "hurricane"?? i like that one better.... i guess i should just be happy she did it at all. it is *such* a great song. in fact, i did an illustration of it for one of my classes.... i showed the emotions "rip[ping] out of me...." whoooosh... anyway, i think that whole "censorship" issue is really interesting; i think we *should* talk about it. i had no idea there even IS a PG-13 version of "LP." or is there? in the case of this particular record, it really gets at the crux of what she's trying to do. here we go again.... we talked about this with "HWC" in particular. it seems like she's trying to have it both ways: appeal to that very young demo who spend all their money on CDs and then still try to unleash her straight-talking self. me, i personally can't stand "HWC" (in terms of full-frontalness, it's SO lame compared to "dance of the seven veils" and even "flower") and, yeah, what the hell's it doing on this record??! i don't think it's so funny to mind-fuck a 13-year-old. that's totally creepy, not to mention hugely irresponsible. sorry to go all tipper gore on this, but come on. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 13:05:49 EST From: LilRussianGirl@aol.com Subject: [support-system] liz on cnn As headline news went to commercial, the opening part of it's sweet played last night... ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #309 ************************************
