["Mike Katsoulis" Subject: [support-system] she played hurricane cindy! SHE PLAYED HURRICANE CINDY! Well, I obviously saw Liz Phair last night. This was the sixth Liz show I've seen this year, and it was by far the best. She played at my school's auditorium, Foellinger Auditorium (about a 2 minute walk from my dorm) in Champaign, IL. It was a really cool, intimate setting where anyone in the building could yell something to her and she cold hear and respond. We got there a little early and spotted her bus barked in front of the foreign language building. She was in there getting ready and what not. Her roadie was running in and out like he usually does. We had a cigarette there, then went to our seats. Let me tell you, we had great seats. They were a little off to the side, but it was front row. They better have been good seats, because I spent WAY more money on them than I needed to. I spend a grand total of 63 dollars for two presale tickets, when students at my school had a discounted price of 19.50 per ticket, and the show definitely didn't sell out. I figured it was Liz, so I didn't mind paying the extra. Wheat took the stage, and they were good as usual. The blonde singer is very. eccentric? He has a pretty poor stage presence. The brunette one on the other hand is awesome. I remember talking to him outside the Metro show, and he was really cool. The audience's seemed to semi enjoy them. One person asked for them to play the song "I met a girl I'd like to know better But I'm already with someone" (they obviously only knew the lyrics. that WAS the most memorable song of theirs from the two Metro shows that I saw myself). The lead singer had a tendency to delay a lot, and he doesn't really have good speaking skills. A person behind me said something like "get a move on!" and I glared my eyes at him. Liz finally took the stage, looking hot as usual. She was wearing a pink baseball-T that said TRAMPOLINE on it (Pete Yorn's label that is releasing the Greatest Hits Vol. 2 CD that features "Don't Apologize"). She was also wearing the camouflage mini-skirt that I've seen her wear before. Her hair was tied back into a pony tail. Unlike the other 5 shows that I saw this year, she looked REALLY laid back and calm and relaxed. I actually ended up liking the headphones a lot. She made a comment about how she has wanted to use them for six years, but everyone said that it wasn't a cool thing to do. They enabled her to walk around stage, and MOST IMPORTANTLY - - make eye contact! She was so into the crowd, it was amazing. I can't even tell you how many times she made eye contact with me (probably because I knew all the lyrics). During "Rock Me," it felt like she was piercing a hole into my forehead with her eyes... I liked it, lol! She played pretty fiercely. She broke a string twice, after which she would apologize to her roadie Mike. She told the crowd that she felt bad, because he has already had a bad week, and her breaking strings wasn't making it better. She then went on to tell the crowd about his horrible week, which consisted of an ex-gf who dumped him for another guy. I guess she wants him back now, but he has another girl that he is sort of seeing. Well, Liz went on to say that she thinks he should stay with the new girl, but entertain the old girl also. that way he would have two chicks! (this was met with a lot of laughter from the audience). She told the crowd to talk to her if they ever need any "love advice." She also told the story about her old guitar, and how she screwed it up after submerging it into Lake Michigan for her first video. I guess she just got it fixed, and they found a few really old pics behind the wooden thing on the front (I don't play guitar, I have no idea what that is called). She referred to them as "ancient Liz pics." Somewhere inbetween I managed to yell "Don't Apologize," and she responded by saying the band hadn't learned that one yet. I guess I was impressed with her set list most of all. At all 5 shows that I saw before this one, she pretty much played an identical setlist. It was sort of annoying. Exact same songs, almost identical order. it got boring nonetheless. She really integrated more songs into this set. "Friend of Mine" was great and touching. I loved the live rendition. I also really enjoyed "Mesmerizing," because I don't remember her playing it at her last shows. Even though I knew she would play "Jealousy," I got a tingle in my spine when she started it. it was just really exciting to hear her play a song that I hadn't heard live yet. I also really enjoyed hearing "Hot White Cum" because she didn't play it at any of the previous shows I saw. However, these songs took the cake for me: "May Queen," "Hurricane Cindy" and "Flower." It almost seemed like she played "May Queen" on a whim, because Liz said to the crowd that she probably has no idea how to play it, but that her guitarist would back her up. Correct me if I'm wrong, but she doesn't play this regularly, does she? She strummed her guitar for a few seconds, then started it. needless to say, it was amazing, and I was shocked. I don't know if I read the set lists posted here too quickly or something, but I don't remember this song being mentioned. Was this her first time playing it? She also played "HURRICANE CINDY" (I almost crapped my pants when she started playing this). She started this one awkwardly also. She told the crowd to wait a few seconds, as she strummed her guitar to herself and said that she felt like she was at one of her first shows (which indicated to me that she was going to play an oldie). When she started strumming the intro, I was shocked, because I had just read on the list that she NEVER PLAYS THIS SONG (except for some European date), and that she should start incorporating it into her set lists. It was great regardless. Another impressive song was "Flower." She played this at the shows I had seen earlier, but she revamped it for this leg of the tour, I guess. it was this incredible new version of the song. I loved it - it was so rocking. It started out with a really good solo, and then went on with different guitar parts and instrumentation. It sounded great. Her band sounded really strong. I remember at the start of the tour, everyone was ripping on them. They did suck on Leno and Kimmel, but last night they were so tight. I managed to get a set list after the show from her roadie Mike, which made me happy. The songs are listed in the following order: 6' 1" Johnny Feelgood Friend of Mine Polyester Bride Mesmerizing May Queen Rock Me Divorce Song Perfect World Hurricane Cindy Flower Help Me Mary Extraordinary Jealousy Never Said Why Can't I? Supernova ENCORE: Stratford on Guy Hot White Cum Fuck and Run I am very happy that she doesn't play "Favorite" anymore, even though some idiot in the crowd asked for it. It is still surprising that she only plays 5 songs from her new album. I'm not complaining though. I would shit in my pants if she ever played "whip-smart." I saw the show with my friend Bobbie who had never before heard of Liz. I asked her if she could tell the difference between the poppier songs and the older ones, and she said she cold DEFINITELY tell. She said that it wasn't really the music that made it obvious, but it was the lyrics. I thought that was really interesting. After the show, we went out back and had a cigarette with her roadie Mike. I've seen this guy at every Liz show I've gone to this year. He was pretty cool. He said he was from Baltimore. I can't really remember what we talked about - we were just chit chatting for a few minutes. Liz came out piggy-back style on someone because it was pouring rain outside. I looked at her and said "You played Hurricane Cindy!" and she looked at me and smiled and said "yeah, we finally did" or something like that. The guy she was on took her straight the bus, where she told everyone to come to the door for her to sign stuff. Unlike the other shows, she was really talkative and nice at this one. I told her that out of the six shows I have seen this year, last night's show was definitely the best. She said she felt really relaxed and calm. She asked me if I wanted anything signed, and I said No. My friend who was also at the show wanted a picture of her "Trampoline" shirt, and I told her that she needed to start playing "Don't Apologize" again. She sort of smiled and gave me a thumbs up. I guess that was it. if I remember anything else, I'll mention it later. But it does exist (follow the URL I quoted). > And I'm not coming down on you Paul, but the very idea of > chopping up mature works for the PG-13 crowd is just wrong. > Even with the artists consent, it's > mutating an album into a completely different form -- and is a > very bizarre, sickening form of censorship. "And a lot of their young daughters love the record [...] but hopefully they're listening to the PG-13 version." Not my words - that was Liz in a recent interview (I just knew I should have included this quote in my original enquiry). I agree with your sentiment about chopping up mature works - again, hence the enquiry. "Liz Phair" can stand the loss of HWC, but it's not clear to me what havoc would be wreaked on the other albums. OTOH, I disagree with the view that any change is wrong in principle. Ultimately, my opinion is that the artist should be the sole arbiterer - it's her work, after all. If the artist endorses it, I'm prepared to consider it - but I may decide not to buy it. The concept of PG13 is one I support, not because I support censorship (I don't) but because I believe in presenting young children with age-appropriate material. PG13 subjective and it gets things wrong. It's bad at handling subtle material (e.g., Blazing Saddles). Basically, it's a blunt instrument. Unfortunately, it's the only guide a parent has. I'm happy to discuss big topics like parenting and censorship by email, but these are not topics for the list, I think. My original enquiry was intended to establish the facts about what the changes have been made to PG13 versions of Liz's albums. If anyone can explain what the PG13 version of EIG is, please reply. I thought you brought up some very interesting points which would be open for discussion on the list. We discuss a wide range of things that are at least some way Liz related. I tried to answer your question that best I could, while also providing something a bit provocative for everyone. james ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 19:18:52 -0800 (PST) From: Kate Stewart Subject: Re: [support-system] she played hurricane cindy! These new shows sound awesome. I'm jealous. I want to hear this new version of flower and the others that she doesn't normally play live. Has anybody recorded any of them? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Protect your identity with Yahoo!
