That's dirty. Did anyone make mp3's of the new "Don't Apologize", or higher bitrate versions of "Jeremy Engle", and "It's Fine"? Feel free to e-mail me privately. - -dan _________________________________________________________________ MSN Messenger with backgrounds, emoticons and more. http://www.msnmessenger-download.com/tracking/cdp_customize ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2003 12:46:56 -0800 (PST) From: Emil Breton Subject: [support-system] columbus, OH 11/11/03 Newport Music Hall Well, I saw Ol' Ratmouth last night in Columbus at the Newport Music Hall. I barely made it home alive, what with the horrendous driving conditions I endured over the 3-hour trek. But here I am (and where are you all? no other show reports? wtf?). First things first -- the setlist. I have Liz's copy right here, in my hot little hands (that Jack White-esque roadie handed it right to us; we didn't even want it): 6'1" Johnny Feelgood Friend of Mine Polyester Bride *Mesmerizing (I don't know why this has an asterisk) Rock Me Divorce Song Perfect World Flower Favorite Help Me Mary Extraordinary *Jealousy Never Said Why can't I? - --Stratford-on-Guy (abbreviated; not on setlist) Supernova Encore: H.W.C. Red Light Fever (not on setlist) Fuck and Run If you didn't already know, Liz is now using a headset microphone, just like she threatened to do several months back. When I first heard about this "dream" being made a "reality" (on the LizPhair.com message board), I thought to myself "Well, it doesn't get any gayer than this." But honestly, she didn't exactly go all Britney Spears on us, and she really didn't move that much from her center/front position (right in front of me -- oh, yeah). So all is not lost; she truly just hates stretching to reach the microphone, I suppose. "Mesmerizing" rocked, and it's so good to see her playing guitar on that one. She played a big fancy acoustic guitar on "Polyester Bride", and it was loud as hell. I can't remember the last time I got so excited over that song. "Perfect World" proves that she's still got some mystique left in her playing; that "make sense of me" part still eludes me, even though I saw her do it right in front of me. "Jealousy" is cheesy in its current incarnation, with too much cymbal action, and Dino's guitar drowns out Liz's, although I'm glad they marched it out. "Never Said" was a good time -- she used a pedal w/ her Duo Sonic II on it, and it was loud. I was bummed she didn't play "Glory"; I kept screaming for it and had intended to shout "Steve Albini sucks!" at the end. After "Why Can't I", I got tired of shouting for "jeremy Engle" at the top of my lungs, and figured I'd have a better shot at "Stratford". So I yelled it, and she said "Stratford-on-Guy? Okay, they don't know this one and it's not on the setlist, but let me just do it really quick." and she played it, and it rocked (although she skipped the 2nd verse, I don't know why), and it was followed by thunderous applause -- all thanks to me, of course. So the next time you 11/11/03 Newport Music Hall attendees are sitting in your car, changing who you are, and singing along to "Stratford-on-Guy", trying to reach those low, low notes and thinking to yourself "Gee, that sure was great when Liz did an impromptu version of that song that one night in Columbus", please remember me -- Emil -- and think warm thoughts. My girlfriend and I heckled her after The Underwear Song (all in good fun! all in good fun!) "Go back to Hollywood!" we yelled, but Liz didn't hear us, or didn't mind the "good-natured ribbing". My girlfriend was also completely appauled by "H.W.C." (which I thought was a fine little number), and explained to me on the ride home why "Flower" is the real McCoy and "H.W.C." is just all part of the Pandering Slut act. Not to worry, though, because Liz's true nerd self was also on display during the show. Probably the coolest moment for me (apart from "Stratford") was watching Liz NOT make those bullshit I'm-in-ecstacy faces (like on "Rock Me"), and just concentrating on her guitar, during "Red Light Fever" (a song I don't really know or care for) -- I got a good look at the Liz I fell in love with 9 years ago. She's still there! I can't really explain it, but it has a lot to do with the rat mouth and the crooked nose. I melted, I tell you. Also, that song "Friend Of Mine" seems awfully bouncy for such a depressing song, dontcha think? I was surprised. After the show, I gave her a CD bootleg of her show at the Wiltern Theatre from 1995. I asked her if she'd ever heard any bootlegs from that solo electric tour, and she said she hadn't, and seemed pretty excited to get this. I hope she listens to it; that tour was probably the greatest thing she's ever done (apart from the actual songwriting). I wanted to tell you other things I remember about the show before they fade from memory, but I don't want this to bounce. Also, I only got 2 1/2 hours of sleep last night and I need to hit the hay.
