Subject: [support-system] liz in san D. so guess who saw liz last nite at her tour-opening gig? me, that's who. HA! and i must say, it was pretty good.... we made our way to the downtown club 4th & B, through the still-smoky air. yeeeeks. anyway, there was a pretty huge crowd; people were appreciative, warm, and definitely there to see liz. i'll go through the set list as best i can; i know the first two songs she did for sure and then the rest, i'm fuzzy on the order, but it's definitely what she did play. ok, here goes: she opened with "6'1"" followed by "help me, mary." then i'm pretty sure she did "take a look," which sounded great, and then it went "rock me" (she put her guitar down and balanced it in front of her the way she does. that girl needs to get a stand or two! the tech is running out after *every* song. kinda silly if you ask me....), "never said," "polyester bride," "mesmerizing," "red light fever," "glory" (??! yeaahhh.... it was great; she sorta souped it up a bit; sounded wonderful), "johnny feelgood," "extraordinary," "flower" (which was also embellished a bit--the full band joined in during one of the verses; very cool), "jealousy," "favorite," "divorce song," "fuck and run," "supernova," "uncle alvarez," "perfect world," and then the set ended with "why can't i?" followed by the requisite waiting time for the encore, which was as follows: "friend of mine" and "H.W.C." then, lights on and we're all out the door.... *** and, you know, i have to say that i think the strategy actually worked. for example, the frat boys to my immediate right, who were definitely introduced to her via "Liz Phair," actually did know some of the older stuff. so, i think peope actually *are* checking out her backcatalog as a result of "LP." and during the show, and i was really glad she said this, she strongly encouraged people to check out her EP material. i wish she woulda done some of those tunes; "jeremy engle" or "hurricane cindy" (the WCSE version) woulda fit nicely into the set list.... *** and of course she looked great: cheap-ass (i ! think... i hope... i hope she didn't pay more than 5 bucks for that thing. suffice to say it looked like something i'd buy--cause, yeah, it's 5 bucks!), clingy, lime-green-weird-print-with-hot-pink-lace-trim dress accessorized with dark gray sparkly "arm warmers" and a black beaded choker. hair in a ponytail that she kept fixing throughout the night. supercute! so cali.... hahaha.... *** definitely go see her. the charm is not gone! meaning her presentation... well, you know, she's actually kinda demure--dainty even. it's so funny people were bringing up the "i just rock it" comment at that awards show because she's obviously got the mind, heart, and soul of a rebel, but the execution is so girly! it's just adorable. she's not all "rawkin'" with that physicality that, say, sheryl has. more power to her, i say. oh, and the band is TIGHT. good, good band. i liked hearing that guitarist sing the high parts on "never said"; i think she did too--she kept looking over at him and smiling when he did it. it was so cute! and they rocked out a few, including "supernova," "jealousy," and "divorce song." (right? can anyone else confirm the exact ones?) *** and she was killin' me with her flat, nasal, midwestern As (made me sorta homesick); she seriously sounds like madonna sometimes. "flower" was, i'm pretty sure, a full octave up.... i got so misty when she did "flower".... it was all pretty straightforward; just a gal playin' some stuff she wrote. as it was the first time out on this tour, i think she was bit nervous about how it was all playing out; she kept putting her index finger between her teeth and looking at us like "oh, i don't know... was that ok??" *** i hadn't heard "red light fever," the infamous "favorite," "H.W.C.," and "friend of mine." i can do without all but "friend of mine"--man, i was knocked out!! that is an *awesome* song! "why can't i" sounds like "blah, blah, blah" to me at this point, but "rock me" and "ex-or" held up just fine. and, i'm sorry, but "H.W.C.," although catchy as hell, is just plai! n vulgar . ugh. anyway, overall a really good show. definitely go. i'm so glad she can get out there by herself and do her own thing. i'm sure she's much happier about that, too. ok, sorry this is so long. toodles. dp (who else was there??) ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #294 ************************************
