Actually I like it better than when I first heard it. It has accompanied us on a few road trips and actually sounds better running down I-40 than it does around the house. Over all not as good as EIG or whipsmart but i like it better than WCSE. LP: I choke on little "Little Digger" a little bit. We haven't gotten around to "Red Light Fever" but that will get me. So will "Friend of Mine" and "Good Love Never Dies." We haven't thrown out all the new stuff yet because we want to keep reassuring old fans that you're here to see the same person moving through a life. We're waiting until the audience seems to know the new record a little more. ********** interesting that she calls "let the night come" "good love never dies," eh? as an aside, i know she's said that "let the night come," "friend of mine," and "red light fever" are about relationships that she's had post-divorce, but i'm here to say that i completely disagree with this and believe every single one of them is about her ex-husband. i've always kind of thought this, but seriously, hearing that these songs get to her is a bit solidifying sandra ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 2003 15:12:13 EDT From: TitleTK@aol.com Subject: Re: [support-system] songs on the new album >>interesting that she calls "let the night come" "good love never dies," eh?< < I think Good Love Never Dies is the official name for the song, isn't it? >>As an aside, I know she's said that "let the night come," "friend of mine," and "red light fever" are about relationships that she's had post-divorce, but I'm here to say that I completely disagree with this and believe every single one of them is about her ex-husband. I've always kind of thought this, but seriously, hearing that these songs get to her is a bit solidifying<< It's strange but everytime I listen to Red Light Fever I think of the song completely in terms of Liz's character. I know it's about relationships, but I think the song could easily be taken as a perfect metaphor for her success and failings. "scared the lights'll turn green you'll have to be seen you'll be like anybody else scared the lights'll turn red you're stuck in your head to scared to commit to even her how you gonna get through the year" Now, if we assume that Liz is singing in the third person here an added subtext emerges. She's scared everyone will see her and want to be her and she can't hide behind her shyness and insecurity anymore. But she's also scared her songs will only exist in the style she is used to and never reach a larger audience. She can't commit to either choice. How's she gonna get through it? "you can... too many people doing too many things that you only want to forget" But here she is throwing the dilemma out to her fans and critics. Why can't she just do what she wants? I'm just sort of babbling here. But this has become the best song on the album for me b/c of the extra subtext. I've even redubbed the song "Liz Phair Fever." I remember standing in the front row at the Metro and when she sang "Too Many People Want too Many Things, that you only want to forget." I pointed right at her and she proceeded to smile and wink at me -- almost as if she understood the double meaning. Of course she may have just had something in her eye . . . james ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 2003 16:10:46 -0400 From: "Daaaaan Theman" Subject: [support-system] RE: Listening to LP After a gap of not listening to "LP" at all for a month or so, I must say it continuously gets worse w/ each listen. On the other hand, I've been listening to "Exile", and "wcse" a lot lately; and can't get over the brilliance of these records. Perhaps I overplayed "LP", or maybe I just liked it so much at first because it was something new by Liz after we all waited five years. Now I am not crazy about it at all. I love the ep, even the unreleased demos aren't that bad. I just don't know about her anymore. I think most good musicians get about 10 years of brilliance, then lose it. Look at David Bowie; in my opinion everything after "scary monsters" sucked. Unfortunately Liz did not put out very much in that 10 year period, so i doubt she'll be really be remembered for very much more than the pop song by numbers "why can't I?". For those in search of something new, I recommend these artists: ed harcourt, sondre lerche, jesse malin, bright eyes, daniel marr, and patrick park. They may not compare to "exile in guyville", but all are worth a listen. - -dan - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ See when your friends are online with MSN Messenger 6.0. I've listened to it about five or six times since it's been released in June. It's not as exciting to listen to it as it was when I got a copy of the promo around March or so. Sorry about the accidental post. Can't wait to start on the top ten of the year we do every year, it's coming up!
