It was highly entertaining. Lots of jokes about early '90s grunge. It's probably still on their site somewhere. That's funny that Exile is in used Chicago stores- I wonder if that's some kind of act of aggression or retaliation against the new album. I wish somebody or some company kept track of what cds are sold back- like it would be a sort of negative billboard list that could count against the number of albums an artist has sold. It definitely means something, in my opinion. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! I can't see how things could get much worse than "Liz Phair". Although, Liz being Liz, there is still a chance that with the next record, she's going to say "If you thought my last record was bad, you haven't heard anything yet. I'm WAY worse." And wouldn't *that* be a treat! I can't even imagine. Although, you have to remember that she's already said the next album won't be like this current one, and that the "business" people will be upset with her, just as the "indie" people were upset with her. She writes quirky music and says things that most people would be scared to say. That is why we all started listening to her, and that is why we belong to this mailing list to this day, right? She spoke to us in a way that was new and intimate and I know I for one haven't been able to find anyone who comes even close. But just because she is like that on an album doesn't mean that she is like that live. She obviously struggles to find places where she is comfortable performing her music, either in the studio or elsewhere. That is why there is always so much time between albums. And yes, I know she is over her stage fright, but just because she can get onstage and play guitar and sing in front of people doesn't mean that overnight she is going to be transformed into Madonna or whoever the hell else is looked upon as a consummate performer. I have a BFA in theatre and have done just about everything that most people would consider embarrassing onstage (including making out with guys and girls, and taking my clothes off), and I still can't even contemplate singing onstage without wanting to throw up. People have limits to what they can do. Liz has jumped a huge hurdle, but don't expect too much. I am grateful for every time I see her because I don't know how long it is going to be until the next time around. And I have met her 3 different times now, and she's nice. She's guarded because we are all freaks over her, generally, and she doesn't KNOW us like we all think we know her. I don't see what the big deal is if she is in a different place than other musicians. She still works her ass off, and I know I for one will always be in line to buy her albums, and tickets to her next concert. I've gone back and forth on this song... sometimes I'm amused by it, sometimes I'm bored with the F-word repetition, sometimes I'm just MEH. That being said, I could never leave it off any "Best of..." compilation, even if it were my own quirky version complete with "Carnivore" and "You Have No Idea". It's just that it's quintessential Liz, the juxtaposition of longing sweetness (letters and sodas) with mundanity, profanity, and, in the end, despair (I'm gonna spend my whole life alone). I had trouble coming up with a verdict on this one, but I ended up going with the demo simply because of the guitar... I'm a sucker for the angry, fast strumming on the GS version... on EIG, she eschewed the guitar for the jaunty drums, which gives the song a lighter, more playful air which kind of dulls the sense of bumbling frustration so simply and purely portrayed on Girlysound. That being said, I think she did well to eliminate the last verse on EIG, as it just comes off as a poorly executed afterthought... turning the tables on the guy. And the EIG version is far from a hatchet-job... despite the lighter mood, the essential pain that is at the core of Fuck & Run is not trivialized. Girls' Room (SD--WCSE) VERDICT: differences are negligible ORDER I HEARD THEM: demo first I can't hear any differences besides the WCSE version sounding slightly "cleaner". Good for her for not screwing around with it. Go West (GS--WS) VERDICT: It cleaned up nice!! ORDER I HEARD THEM: official release first Considering her limited materials, it's rather remarkable that the GS version of "Go West" was already so well realized in its nascent state. That being said, this song definitely benefited from the increased tempo and fuller dynamic range of its studio treatment, in a similar way as "Divorce Song" was fleshed out, though not quite as dramatically. It was already a well-balanced, well-crafted pop song, and Liz did well to not monkey with or omit any of the lyrics. The airiness of the falsetto counterpoint vocal (as in "Stepping!" "New York!" etc.) was preserved and improved upon in the studio, and the impression that they give--of their being "the voice of the road beckoning to the traveller"--is further enhanced by their contrast with the fat, bassy drums and rhythm guitar she acheived on Whip-smart. The rhythm overall is far more propulsive than on GS, far more evocative of the rhythm of automotive travel. And while, as on other songs, the purity of her guitar playing is muddied a bit by the production, on this song I can live with it, because overall she captured the spirit so well. And that draggy, I'll-just-record-this-one-last-song-before-I-crash-at-5AM sound that works magic on such songs as "Do You Love Me?" and "I Know It's Not Easy" is not missed on "Go West". This is a song that needs to be bright-eyed and b.-tailed, and she did just that on Whip-smart. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #282 ************************************
