In > fact, I have really very little desire to see her again for a while. > Which does not say much for Liz. yeah, but as you say, you went to see her four times in one year...if i saw that much of liz in a short period of time, i'd be burnt out too. i don't see how that is her fault. i doubt most artists plan on fervent fans seeing them repeated times on the same tour. and what gives anyway? isn't this a benefit show? why are some folks complaining that liz is doing a benefit show? she doesn't have a say who else is on the bill. If i were asked to do a benefit show and i respected the cause, or even a radio show for a station that liked my records, i would likely do it--even if it meant i had to play before britney sodding spears. steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 12:34:15 EDT From: TitleTK@aol.com Subject: Re: [support-system] like, i can't believe she's opening for BNL! The Breeders, Cat Power, Bjork, Tori Amos, I don't know how much they plan on fervent fans, but each show is very different and exciting in its own right. And all of these artists fair very well financially concerning their shows because of this. I would venture at least 25% of fans attending these concerts have or will be catching another show on that very same tour. Liz sold out much of her concerts this summer, but that was mainly b/c she was a new phenomenon to some people, was touring with Jason Mraz, and/or hadn't toured for so long. If she continues to tour throughout this year in the same vein, I don't think she'll have a chance of selling out three nights at the Metro. james ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 18:16:52 -0400 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: [support-system] the whole liz deal daaaaan the(other)man wrote: I heard liz hosting a show on the super cheesy (bust most popular NYC radio station) Z100 (run on setence, I know). I was not impressed in the slightest. Now her CD's in NYC record stores say "As heard on z100". I know I defended her new album a lot, but this was definiely a new low for her. I think any of the artisctic credibilty she once had is vanishing quickly. i think of liz as someone who has always just missed the mainstream boat - - and that really sucks if that was what she was always trying to get on. she missed the popular Alanis Morrissette bandwagon of "angry white women" - but was respectully named a "big influence" in the movement. whatever. she was involved in Lilith Fair which was the next big thing - and that didn't take the cake either. something about her stuff was a little too weird, her voice a little too shakey, she wasn't a paula cole, she wasn't an alanis, she wasn't a sarah mclaughlin (thank god) or a tori amos - she wasn't a sheryl crow (she tried that with the california tan and back up vocals) and she is NOT an avril lavigne. i always liked her for this very reason - that she was such an underdog and a weirdo and didn't sound like anyone else. i wish she would just open her eyes and look in the mirror and realize she was okay how she was. i'm super worried about where she is going with her music and i'm going to stay worried until we hear a new album. i also have to comment on her live and her attitude towards fans....i don't know..i've seen her a few times now (the last being detroit st.andrews hall this summer with jase) and she seemed totally cool with her fans. she was outfront of saint andrews hall going in and out of her tour bus, and a few times people stopped her to chat her up. she signed autographs, accepted a gift from jase himself - she was totally cool - seemed busy - but nice, she didn't seem annoyed, she seemed pretty genuine, a little nervous. after the show she signed everything, shook hands, snapped pictures with people - she was fine. then she was MOBBED though. completely. she was surrounded by like - 25 - 30 people shouting her name, flashing cameras in her face, pushing shit on her - she couldn't move. i was claustrophobic just looking at her. anyway - while we are on the subject of kim deal - i've seen her and the breeders play several times the last few years as well - and yes - at every show i have talked to kim, or seen her drinking a beer in the bar before the show, always mingling and waving to people who she actually RECOGNIZES from going to her other shows. i've been shoulder to shoulder with her in the audience during the opening band, and i've seen her come down into the crowd after her set to sign and chat with everyone who wants to meet her - and she's totally humble and genuinely flattered when people say they appreciate her music. but i have never seen kim deal get mobbed. i think if liz is a little bit squirmish of being around fans, it's because maybe some of us grizzled kids of rock n roll snobbery have a tendancy to be a little creepy now and then. hell - i told liz i broke my pelvis for her back in 1998. that's fuckin creepy. i'd be creeped out if someone told me that. liz is geeky. she doesn't strike me as much of a people person, and there's nothing wrong with that. she'd be great one-one-one and her best friends probably love her and think she's hilarious, intelligent SUPER nice and they all are probably in love with her. but in a group - she's probably the quiet one. kinda insecure, kinda not sure where she belongs, drop dead gorgeous - and combine all of those and you get the image of a bitch. who knows? what is worrying me - is the airbrushing her pictures are getting. i just got a new email from her official mailing list thing - and it was about the tower records appearance this tuesday - an OH MY GOD. her face loooks like a piece of wax. almost cartoonish. i know this isn't her fault - but who the hell is doing her marketing? she is not going to be sold to a 13 year old girl audience. it's not happening. she's too weird. too awkward. i think liz has already acquired the bulk of her fans with her ealier stuff. if she tries to change it up too drastically this far into the game - she's gonna screw herself and piss her fans off and no one is going to like her. i don't know. now i'm ranting. i have no idea why i am even sending this email now. what was my point? i quit smoking. it's getting to my head. time for a cigarette. dan ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #281 ************************************
