It's actually a Cat Stevens tune from his second album "New Masters" from 1967. Rod Stewart stopped writing his own music way back after "Do you think I'm Sexy" (POSSIBLE EXCEPTION: "Love Touch" from the Legal Eagles Soundtrack, which, for all I know, may be a cover). Since then he has churned out bland version after bland version of all sorts of covers, including "This Old Heart of Mine", "It Had to Be You", and "That's What Friends Are For", that's right folks, I said "That's What Friends Are For". That is beside the point. The Sheryl Crow tune is also supposed to be on an upcoming Cat Stevens tribute album. Began to listen with much trepidation (tales of selling out, alienating fans etc). "Liz Phair" is a great album. It's a nicely balanced "meat and potatoes" rock album. Frankly, I don't see this as that big a departure from Whipsmart as "Spacegg" was. The "Lavigne" issue. Yes, it does on 2 or 3 tracks but it's more in the treatment of BV/Harmony vocals, and a couple of cliche chord progressions. I'd argue that they we're looking for a "hit" out of these. Slick production aside there's a couple of tracks that would fit on Guyville (notably "Firewalker"). My current faves are "Rock me", "It's sweet", and "My Bionic Eyes". "Little Digger" is an absolute flawed masterpiece, real emotionally mature writing. I'd venture the critics are listening to the sheen and not the substance. "Liz Phair", does exactly what it says on the tin! 8/10 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2003 18:05:23 -0400 From: Catherine Molanphy Subject: [support-system] OT: First Cut Is The Deepest SHERLY McLACHLAN wrote: > Also heard a new Sheryl Crow tune, a copy of Rod Stewarts, The First Cut is > the Deepest. It's actually a Cat Stevens original, and his version is my favorite. It wasn't released as a single in the States, which is why most people know the Rod cover better. Check it out if you can... I just love Cat's voice on that tune. - --Catherine, who's "sure gonna give you a try..." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2003 18:07:46 -0400 From: Catherine Molanphy Subject: [support-system] OT: More Cat... > From: "Jon Burk" > It's actually a Cat Stevens tune from his second album "New Masters" from > 1967. Whoops... I didn't see this until I posted my own FYI. I didn't know about that... he isn't dead or anything, is he? - --Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2003 04:21:21 +0000 From: "over pavema" Subject: [support-system] Re: support-system-digest V6 #258 someone wrote: >> I'm going to see Some Girls (Julianna Hatfield) this Saturday should >>be good. Real small place, The Double Door.<< i saw her last sunday at iota, just outside of d.c. (excellent, if tiny place to see a show). fourth time i've seen her (solo acoustic at the knitting factory in nyc -- very glum and bummed; at 930 in d.c. with the blake babies -- great show, great band, but john was the sparkplug while JH just seemed along for the ride; playing bass for evan dando in d.c. at another great show -- though again she seemed only partly there (probably because i believe that if dando is in the room then everyone else becomes an observer); and then at iota on sunday. this was the best i've ever seen juliana play (her guitar playing was excellent, even if she had to stop one song mid-way because a string got caught on something and she had to set it free), and the best mood i've ever seen her in. during the opening act, she was standing next to me and cheering them on, and she seemed much friendlier than usual on-stage. and when her string thing happened, she had the band pick up the song where they'd left off, then said, 'thank you. sorry about the unprofessional moment there with the guitar string. y'know what? i'm *not* sorry about that. i'm not sorry about being unprofessional. there are entirely too many 'professional' musicians around these days, and we should all be encouraging more unprofessionalism!' which is very true. they did pretty much the whole some girls cd, including the ridiculously awesome robert johnson number, 'malted milk' (can anyone imagine liz doing a cover of a great, lost classic without irony?), and a couple of blake babies songs, a very powerful song that begins, 'He's on drugs again...' (wonder who that one's about... anyone taking bets?). and then, closing with a neil young song that was perfect. i really thought juliana fatally lost her way when she did the cd's with 'my sister' and 'universal heartbeat'. but she bounced back so strongly i'm amazed. 'bed' is my favorite of her solo records, and both 'god bless the blake babies' and some girls' 'feel it' are brilliant. i'm sure you know she's playing with freda on drums, from the blakes, but their other bandmate is heidi gluck from 'the pieces', who opened very strong for dando at the black cat. it's a great band, and i'm very certain you'll enjoy the show a lot. as for liz content, did anyone see her on ellen's show? i don't recall reading any re-view of the appearance. who's home at 11am on a weekday that would go buy a liz phair cd? i didn't even bother to tivo it, but in hindsight i'm curious if anyone had any thoughts or impressions about it. lastly, to whoever took them, the photos from the austin city limits show are really good. o _________________________________________________________________ Help protect your PC.
