I was a little worried after some of the reviews I've seen, but was on quite a high after the show. The only complaint I had was Liz's mic could have been a little louder, as she seemed to get drowned out a couple times by the band. Other notes: - - She switched guitars a number of times, but right before Favorite, the guitar tech brought the sunburst Fender (I don't know the technical name) and forgot to plug it in. It's a good thing she didn't try to play until Red Light. She had to ask the guitar player what was the problem. - - She was very accessible before and after the show. She came and went through the front door, and her bus was right out front. She signed a few autographs beforehand, and even took off walking down the street with some guy (in downtown Detroit!) After the show, she was "mobbed" out front. Security kept trying to move her closer to the bus, but she kept taking pictures, and signing stuff, etc. until everyone was in the middle of the road. Security finally put a stop to it since there was traffic. - - I was in the second row, right behind Jase. I got one of Liz's guitar picks after the show when the stage was being disassembled. Liz used it--I can tell by the scuffs. :-) - - Liz's shirt was inside out but is said either "Hot Rod Baby" or "Hot Rod Girl." I figured it out last night, but can't remember now. I should have written it down with the setlist. My memory sucks. Her shirt also had a picture of a girl on it. - - There were a few shoutouts for Stratford, and she played it solo, seemingly impromptu. I got a look at one of the setlists after show, and Stratford was not listed, but neither was HWC. That's all I think of right now. It was my first Liz show, and I loved it. Liz rocks! Craig, Thanks for the updates on Maiden and Mustaine. A bright spot in the world of metal! j. - --- Chris DeLisle wrote: > it was a love phest in Detroit Rock City tonight. i > don't know what the exact > elements were ~ the heat, the love, the desire for > something to cheer about > (it sucks being a Tigers fan) ~ but something > magical happened tonight between > Liz and the audience. even before the first strums > of 6'1", she had us all in > the palm of her hand. a minute or so into the song, > i think she sensed > something different. no lackluster show tonight. > > the set list as best as i can remember: > 6'1" > Polyester Bride > Rock Me > Never Said > Glory > Divorce Song > Help Me Mary > Favorite > Red Light Fever > Stratford-On-Guy (solo) > Uncle Alvarez > Perfect World > Why Can't I > Johnny Feelgood > Extraordinary > Supernova > > encore: > Little Digger > HWC > Fuck And Run > > notes: > -- either "Divorce Song" came before "Help Me Mary" > or it came right after > it. > -- Liz looked super-fine as usual. before the show > she wore a maroonish (?) > top and a short denim skirt. holy smokes. for the > show, she switched her > shirt to something that was white that had something > written on it. perhaps > Jason could elaborate ~ actually, Jason had quite a > wonderful time, from what > i gather. he was down in front. > -- no real lulls to speak of, although i believe the > "Exile" and "wcse" songs > (and "Supernova") probably got a little bit more of > a reaction. > -- it was crazy hot in there. so hot that after > "Johnny Feelgood" and before > "Extraordinary," Liz actually took her shirt off. > > (cue Beavis and Butthead moans, grunts, > miscellaneous noises) > > to reveal she was wearing a tube top. > -- she teared up a bit during/after "Little Digger." > -- "HWC" was fun as hell to sing along to. > -- no one wanted to leave, but i believe that that's > her show. > -- as many people have said before, she is much > better looking in person, and > that's saying something. > -- the band was fine ~ i mean, i guess there was a > band: i didn't really take > my eyes off her all night. > -- Liz rocked all night. and it looked like she was > having the time of her > life up there on stage. > > nuff said. i'm sure Jason and DanMac will elaborate > further. > > chris deLisle __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The DJ talked about Liz' album, called the Matrix' name real stupid name, talked about her not making a lot of money with her indie albums and felt the need to make a more commercial album to support her career, Extraordinary is a cool song, and told everyone to go out and buy the album if only to be able to play HWC and he said that he'll play it on his show someday when he gets the balls to do it. It was also played for the second week in a row on L.A. station Star 98.7 on its new music show. Can't play the song on its regular rotation because Capitol hasn't released it yet. Why Can't I has been the #1 song on the station for the past few weeks and had a high 60 spins last week. It has also finally reached the top 10 on the Hot AC charts as it has moved very slowly to get there but it keeps moving up regardless. It was also No. 6 on VH1's top 20 countdown. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! (can't wait to see those pics, trent!) anyways. the show was fantastic. i was prepared to be kind of disapointed and that was totally not the case. i would not have stayed anywhere in that god awful hot otherwise. liz seemed really into the performance. she switched guitars a few times, but i can't think of any songs she sang without playing also. little digger was very sentimental-y. before playing, she mentioned that her son was somewhere in the building and then said/did the "earmuffs' gesture from the movie "old school." after several shouts of "stratford on guy" liz said something along the lines of "do you really want to hear that one? okay, i'll try to play it really fast." the rest of the band stepped away (they must not be trained on that one) and she played it alone. i thought that was pretty nice. one bandmember (bass/backup) was into it. the rest just blended it. and the keyboardist really looked like he should still be in high school. but hey, young guys rule. that's all, offhand. i hadn't planned on posting at all, but i thought i'd mention this much. liz b ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 19:28:43 -0500 (CDT) From: marty@evansville.net Subject: [support-system] av club someone may already have mentioned this, but liz is interviewed in "the onion" this week. http://www.theonionavclub.com/current_feature1.html - -vm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 21:01:25 EDT From: TitleTK@aol.com Subject: Re: [support-system] av club Strangely, I thought the onion interview was one of the best I have read! When I found out Liz was playing St Andrews I was let down...there is nothing worse than spending an august night at St Andrews, even if your favorite performer is on-stage. It was so freaking hot in there. I showed up after the opening band and I was drenched in sweat the moment I stepped foot in the venue. I feel so bad for the performers with all the lights on them. I couldn't do it. So Liz comes out and she's wearing a little white top (I couldn't tell what was written on it) and a little denim skirt and these hideous 80s boots that she said she got in Australia. They bust into 6'1" and it sounded great. The crowd was your typical deadbeat detroit crowd (although maybe tonight no one was dancing because it was so fucking hot). Overall the show was pretty good. Liz was in total rock star mode and it was GREAT. She belted out the songs (esp the matrix songs) in a way i haven't heard her sing before and it sounded really good. Also, this is the tightest band I've seen her with. Much better than 98 and 99, and they sound better than recordings ive heard of the acoustic ordeal from earlier this year. Liz had a good attitude about the heat....no comments about why it was so fucking ridiculous nasty in there. Instead she was ever-so-gracious: "Just pretend we're at a beach party!" so very so-cal of her. I loved it. Towards the end she took her shirt off and was wearing a really tiny tubetop (it looked like a headband!). Then she played Extraordinary and when she got to the "take off my clothes" lyric she smiled and rolled her eyes. She told a funny story about the first Lilith she played in Texas. She said it was so nasty hot, and she was nervous because it was the first time she played in front of a huge audience. She spent a long time putting on makeup, and right before she went on Natalie Merchant flicked a bunch of water at her face and made her makeup run and said "you'll thank me later". Highlight of the show: when someone screamed "stratford-on-guy" in between-songs and she said "okay, but really quick" and then played it by herself. Perfect World was also a highlight, and i didn't mind the singalong because the sound was very loud and drowned the crowd out. I don't want to sound like a bitter Exile worshipper, but the best songs of the night were easily the EIG songs. I LOVE the new arrangements. Help Me Mary rocked my ass off. These songs sounded fucking awesome and I'm glad she's deciding to play so many of them live. Supernova rocked, and the few songs from WCSE (Johnny, Polyester Bride, Uncle ALvarez, PW) sounded better than ever. When I saw Liz in 98 and 99, whenever there was a song she didn't play guitar on, she put the guitar down and danced around while she sang (what makes you happy and don't apologize come to mind here.) I am not too sure why she decided to "Wear" her guitar during most of the Matrix songs...that seemed silly, esp considering how hot it was in there. As for the new stuff...there are only a few songs on LP that I like, and I only got to hear one of them, "Red Light Fever". No Love/Hate, no Bionic Eyes, no Firewalker. Which is sad because I think her current lineup has the potential to rock the shit out of those songs. But we got Favorite. Which was awful. She was wearing her guitar and stroking it toward the end and it was just not funny or cute. just icky. another low point of the show for me was Little Digger. I don't know why she kept trying to hit those high notes during the repeated "my mother is mine" at the end. When she started playing "Why Can't I," she got this really weird look on her face...I don't know how to explain it. To me it said "are you ready for this?" but that's just me. The song sounded pretty flat and boring. On the other hand, Extraordinary and Rock Me were pretty fun and full of good humor. I went to the show with a big group of friends who hadn't yet heard LP. During some of LP stuff, one of them kept tugging on my shoulder saying "its 900 degrees on here and this music sucks. why am i here?" But then she'd play a song from a previous album and my friend would say "Oh yeah...that's why!" Afterwards, Liz came right outside once the venue was cleared. She looked completely exhausted and hot and a huge group of people hounded her for autographs, so we decided to leave instead of trying to get a chit-chat with liz. Overall, it was a good night...but combined with how uncomfortable the venue was, I am not sure it was worth the $26 dollars and Vacation time off work I had to take to attend the show. but that was no fault of liz's...she put on a good rock show. steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 23:37:50 -0400 (EDT) From: Stephen Griffes Subject: [support-system] vh1 countdown even though her album is falling off billboard, she's still climbing at vh1.
