Many people have reviewed these shows already, so I'll leave out details like fashion and set lists. Both shows were great. I was VERY surprised at how many people were there to see Mraz, and how few were there to see Liz. They didn't even know who Liz was, and one girl even said "I don't like Liz Phair... i like GOOD female musicians, like Tori Amos..." Although I also enjoy Tori, boy did they get a little music history lesson from me, lol. She looked less frightened of the crowd, although you could still see the old shy Liz every now and then (ESPECIALLY during flower... she was so nervous she was sweating!). I loved watching people's reactions to "Flower." I'll never forget it. Some of the 13 year old Mraz girls looked disgusted, ALL the guys were amused and laughing... Her singing and guitar playing was tighter at the Cleveland show, although overall I must say I preferred the St. Louis show. First off, the St. Louis show was my first time seeing her with a band. She rocked so much, and looked great! Second, she played the exact same songs at both shows. This was really a disappointment for me, because i drove 9 hours to see her perform the exact same show... and Third, she talked to the crowd at lot more at the St. Louis show. She explained almost every song she sang, and I must say she is hilarious. I noticed that she didn't speak very much to the Cleveland crowd. I thought this was weird, especially since the St. Louis show was all a bunch of annoying 13 year old girls there to see Jason Mraz. She actually had a few fans at the Cleveland show. We walked out of the venue right after Liz played at both shows. I had no interest to see Mraz. My friend and I were the first ones in the back of the venue by the bus for a good 40 minutes... then other people started showing up to our dismay. When she came out, she went straight for the bus. Right when I thought she was going to be a diva and ignore us all, she turned around and walked back to talk to us. As everyone but my friend and I went in for the kill, she told them she was tired, signed two or three things, then looked at me. I didn't ask her to sign anything... I just told her we (Mike and Chrissy) would be at the Cleveland show the next day, and asked her to play "Nashville." She said she would if her guitarist learned to play it, and asked where Chrissy was (since she was too shy to say anything). She also said she would give a shot out to Mike and Chrissy at the Cleveland show. She did neither. I guess that is another reason why I was disappointed with the second show I saw, lol. Overall, i had a good time. Hope I have better luck at the two Chicago shows I will see. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2003 08:42:38 EDT From: TitleTK@aol.com Subject: [support-system] Bowery/New York Who's excited for the New York show? Subject: [support-system] please release me [[If you ask me, it strikes me as a little odd that the album's not doing better. "Why Can't I?" is doing increasingly well each week at radio (more adds each week, more spins at stations that have already picked it up, higher chart placements), yet it's not translating into sales. The album should be selling more copies each subsequent week, not less. I'm kind of worried that Capitol will drop promotion soon if this continues and they'll let this album sink like a stone the way that _whitechocolatespaceegg_ did ("Johnny Feelgood" may as well not have even been released to radio as a single, since it was given the most half-hearted promotional push I can recall).]] i know. on the Rope board a few weeks ago i suggested that they get "extraordinary" out *immediately*, and someone tried to smack me down for it. apparently, trying to build album sales is a stupid idea. i was like, look, "why can't i?" sucks and "extraordinary" is *all about* what they're trying to do with her with this album. so what if the single is still climbing? if the album isn't reaping sales from it, what's the fucking point? they put all those other radio-made songs on there for a reason--so release them!!! DUH! it's getting to the point where it might be too late now--you have to build a synchronistic wave, single after single. that's what happened with "thriller," back in the day. and someone mentioned guns 'n' roses. same thing. if she went to all the trouble of trying to break through on the radio and all this, then DO IT, play the game.... get it out there. sheeeeesh. and emil, i *hate* you for getting to dish with her. goddammit.... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2003 18:39:59 +0100 From: Martin McCarthy Subject: [support-system] London Gig Just on the off-chance that I'm not the only UK fan on here... http://www.wayahead.com/sjmmaj/event.asp?e%7Cartist=LIZ+PHAIR&e|promoter=372&resultsperpage=200&filler1=gigsandtours Liz Phair, ICA, London, UK 7th October 2003 I don't see that mentioned on either lizphair.com nor the ICA's website, and the ICA's box office didn't know anything about it. I really have to wonder if you all have lives. Okay, here's another funny story: The guy behind us -- whom I do not think is on this list, but he should be -- who told her he started playing guitar because of her, was wearing this Evil Dead t-shirt. He'd told my girlfriend earlier that this was the second Evil Dead shirt he'd had to buy, because the other one had been spontaneously signed by some dude from -- I think -- the Dropkick Murphys. He'd regretted it, because it was his favorite shirt, and had to buy another one. While I was talking to Liz, she noticed his shirt and exclaimed: "Oh my god! I have to sign your shirt, whether you like it or not!" and proceeded to sign his precious replacement Evil Dead shirt. Stupid rock stars think they can just sign *anything*. The poor guy! Anyway, we all thought that was pretty hilarious, and I'm glad to know she's a fan of that movie. It's so Liz. Emil Confidential to Mike Katsoulis: I can't believe you were at the Cleveland show and didn't take me up on my offer to brawl in the parking lot, boy. I was going to ask you personally when I made the proposal the day before, but I didn't think you'd be driving *9* hours for Liz. So we both missed out. And there was garbage lying all around, like smashed shopping carts, that we could have used as club-type instruments of terror. What a waste. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! In 1993, Liz Phair did that with her debut, "Exile in Guyville," a stinging examination of sex, self-worth and ego in the alt-rock subculture. But there's another side to making an iconic album. Where do you go from there? To most of her fans, Phair was supposed to stay the same confused 26-year-old, making the same left-of-center music forever. So when the singer released her self-titled, fourth album in June, her die-hard fans were amazed at what they heard: a slickly produced record that bore the hallmark of hitmakers such as the Matrix, who helped propel Avril Lavigne to stardom. The reaction was swift and harsh. But Phair, who plays Sunday at Bowery Ballroom and then hits the far-bigger Roseland Ballroom for a second show on Wednesday, says she's happy with her music and will weather the storm. "I don't think too much about it, because I'm kind of busy touring," she says. "I've gone back and listened to the record myself, and I really like it. "So I kind of just have to suffer their ire and move on." The mother of a 6-year-old, Phair had decided that she wanted to make a pop album that had a shot of hitting the charts, rather than the midmarket alt-rock she had been making. "I'm a mom and I'm 36 and that's my M.O.," she says. "This is not my life - this is my work." But while older fans may be surprised by Phair's newfound love of soaring harmonies, beneath the veneer there's still a good amount of her ribald sensibility. She sings about dating younger guys for their stamina and disposability, and celebrates raw sexuality with a frankness that is rare in pop. The gamble may have paid off, as a younger generation of fans is finally discovering the singer. It's good for Phair, but has so far resulted in some odd crowds, where aging hipsters mingle with fresh-scrubbed teenagers trying to look worldly. "I feel like we should set up a groom's side and a bride's side," Phair says of her concert demographics. "The old ones would be cheering against the new fans - who are young girls - and the girls could cheer against them." They do look a lot like Musicmasters at least from a distance, and I couldn't be sure that the "red" guitar wasn't a Duo as well. Unfortunately I didn't get on the front row as planned, because of a burning need for a sushi fix at Sekkis up the street. >>>RE: >>>Chris & Allison Krieger >>>my only question for larry is - what makes her "old fans" creepy? >>>i somehow think i'm one of them. "Creepy old fans" is a quote attributed to Liz, talking about how some of the old fans couldn't accept her change of musical direction on the new album. To be honest I felt a little creepy asking her for her autograph, which is something I've never done with anyone before. I have been on the other end of the situation though (in a band) where someone just goes on and on about how great you are, and you're trying to be polite etc. but thinking this person doesn't have a clue, because you just played the worst set of garbage ever. I'm quite sure Liz could have "no idea" of how much her music has meant to me. When I bought Exile & Whipsmart I made one tape of both the CDs for my car. That tape for the most part never left my cassette player for two and a half years. If it had been vinyl I would have worn out at least 3 copies for sure. That seems a little creepy to me...so count me in as a "creepy old fan" too. I like the new stuff too though.
