[Emil Br] [support-system] "Clean" version of LP [April Haitsuka Subject: [support-system] St. Louis / Pagent I was at the St. Louis show last night...so...yeah...so you know...it was amazing. I was really expecting it to sound terrible considering how lame the Dallas show sounded and how terrible the radio show was...but I was completely blown away. Her set list was really great, and really appropriate considering the type of show it was. And was very rock and a whole lot of fun. I can't remember the order, but it was like..."6'1"", "Poleyester Bride", all four matrix songs, "Fuck and Run", "Johnny Feelgood", "Divorce Song", "Help Me Mary", "Red Light Fever", "Supernova", and "Flower". She closed with "Flower", and it was just great...because the band left and it was just her strumming the same note over and over on her guitar...and she enunciated really well...and the audience LOVED it. I was sort of surprised by how small the venue was...but it made it really awesome since I could get like...five feet away from her. It was cool because she seemed SO HAPPY singing the old stuff. I don't know. Like...she seriously looked like she was being tortured during the chorus of "Rock Me", but then she went into "Help Me Mary", and she was just SO HAPPY and SMILEY and it was so great...and I took pictures but I haven't uploaded them yet. She had the most hilarious bassist ever. He NEVER STOPPED JUMPING. I don't think he stood straight the entire show. He was so wonderfully..."ok, stay pumped, stay pumped, stay pumped, stay pumped, ROCK!!!" It sort of threw me off like...how many people I saw mouthing the new stuff in comparison to how many people there who seemed to know "Supernova". Like...I don't know...I saw at least a dozen people who were singing "Extraordinary", but only four people including me and my friend were mouthing "Supernova"...and it was really weird...because since when is the new album popular evnough to encourage people to see her live? Pretty much everyone was there for MRAZ, though...so...I don't know. Seriously, though, she looked great, and she seemed to really be enjoying herself on-stage. I did the meet & greet thing afterwards, and I got a picture with her, and she photographs SO WELL. Like...she was looking good, but it really threw me off. It was like...you meet her, and she's a normal person; and then you photograph her, and she's this gorgeous Hollywood sex-goddess. It was cool the way the St. Louis show was set-up, too...because Liz and Jason got equal billing...but Liz played before him, so got to see both Sondre Lerche and Liz without having to endure MRAZ. And...yeah...sidenote: Sondre Lerche was the most adorable guy ever. He was just so cute. There was this one part of his show where he was all "St. Louis are you ready to ROCK!?!?! Wait, ok, rock r-o-c-k or rock r-a-w-k? RAWK!? Ok, well the only rock I know is soft-rock. But, yeah. Try to endure it anyway." I don't know. I wish I could've met him afterwards, but I would've had to get out of the crowd...and...then I would've been a lot farther away for Liz, and...yeah. Anyway, yeah, the show was awesome. _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. I don't get why she's touring with Mraz, everybody there was there to see him. I guess she's trying to reach out to the abercrombie/flip-flop crowd. I was completely surrounded by people who didn't really know her. Comments included "Wow, she's old!" when she walked out and after Liz mentioned something about her 4th album, someone behind me said, "FOURTH??" This girl also gave a horrific dying-cat rendition of Why Can't I. Fun fun fun. And during flower, people were really shocked, I heard a "Is she for real?" and "Oh my god!" And I was standing right behind a 40-ish dad and his teenage daughter. Family fun for all. Kate __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! How do you get a wristband? Must buy her NEW record. Ooooooh! See how they get ya... damn. And here I was, all naive, assuming I could just bring my CD that I areddy bought and I'd get the goods. Not that I care about autographs, but I was hoping that this would be my best chance to actually get to *talk* to Liz. Welllll... ::Catherine tries to reconcile herself to the fact that she's being held by her metaphorical bollocks:: Technically, I never actually *bought* the LP CD for myself. My brother bought it, made himself a copy and gave the original to me. 'Cept I'm pretty positive he wouldn't have bought it without knowing I wanted it so much... hrmm. Capitol could have pushed the Matrix/Yorn songs album like they have been to get Liz a gold or platinum record, and we would have had the option of buying 1 or both of them. my guess is the Liz/Penn songs would have outsold the other one, despite the push from the record company. and we would have had anywhere from 25 to 35 songs or whatever. it didn't work with Springsteen (Lucky Town/Human Touch) and...did it work with Guns & Roses?...i know they had, like, 7 videos or something for "Use Your Illusion," but nobody talks about those albums anymore. but for our purposes, here, i think Liz would have done fine. AND she wouldn't have got so much shit from some old fans and critics alike...or maybe she would have got some other kind of shit, but at least we would have had the Penn album which she could hold up and say, "hey, i've still got it." chris deLisle ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Aug 2003 13:24:43 -0400 From: Jase Subject: [support-system] Billboard Does anyone have access to a print copy of Billboard to see where Liz's album charted this week? Their Web site only gives visitors access to the top half (first 100 positions) of the chart and it looks like the album didn't make it that high this week. If you ask me, it strikes me as a little odd that the album's not doing better. "Why Can't I?" is doing increasingly well each week at radio (more adds each week, more spins at stations that have already picked it up, higher chart placements), yet it's not translating into sales. The album should be selling more copies each subsequent week, not less. I'm kind of worried that Capitol will drop promotion soon if this continues and they'll let this album sink like a stone the way that _whitechocolatespaceegg_ did ("Johnny Feelgood" may as well not have even been released to radio as a single, since it was given the most half-hearted promotional push I can recall). Jase ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2003 10:13:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Emil Breton Subject: [support-system] Show Report: 8/6 Cleveland, OH Agora Theatre Last night's show was the 4th best of the Liz shows I've seen, just ahead of Lilith Fair. On the plus side, I talked to her during a meet-and-greet that took place outside her bus during the Mraz set. SET: Identical to St. Louis (same order); I didn't write it down. It felt like more than 13, but I can't recall anything that Larry didn't list. I kept shouting for "Stratford-on-Guy" to no avail. FASHION: Tight blue jeans & pink t-shirt with print on it that couldn't be read as it was knotted in the middle of her (very sweaty) chest. She was wearing a cap, the name of which escapes me -- like a golfer's cap (not a visor) or a conductor's cap. (Sorry, fashion ain't my forte!) Her hair is blond as hell. My girlfriend exclaimed "My god, she looks like Madonna!" but I said "No! Never! Uh... how about Sarah Jessica Parker?" Anyone else notice? It's appropriate, considering that she's becoming the modern rock equivalent of Sex & the City (and that's a good thing!). Her voice is almost as high as Parker's now, too. PERFORMANCE: The band submerged Liz, which she used to say was always her biggest fear. Earlier I'd told Dino he was great and that this band is much better than the last, but now I don't know. They didn't sound like anything special (I guess that's the idea), and the keyboards are a waste. Liz played guitar on everything except "Favorite", "Why Can't I", and "Rock Me". She's re-learned "Help Me Mary" and made me very proud indeed. She's using a pedal now, too. She played: white 1962 Duo-Sonic (the one with the star) and said her boyfriend actually bought it in Cleveland ("so in a way, it's home now") and that it's her favorite, and really the only guitar she writes with; red 1963 Musicmaster (which is just always naturally louder, I've noticed); and a sunburst Telecaster on "Red Light Fever". No Mustangs and no Strats, people. Liz's new "Flower" technique is cool -- solo, with this weird fingerpicking/up-stroke thing on the 5th & 6th strings, closer to Girlysound than any other rendition over the years. CROWD: Very cute, very blond, very pink, very made-up, and VERY young (except for the chaperoning parents!). A flock of Mraz wannabe-groupies (and I'm not making that up). Respectful and attentive during her set, and quite responsive to the slut factor in her songs (she mostly played the 'fuck' songs). There were roughly 3-4 pockets of Liz fans shouting along, fists-in-air, throughout her set. "Divorce Song" got the biggest resonse, "Flower" notwithstanding. STAGE BANTER: "It's *hot* in here. I kind of like it." "I went to Oberlin, I don't know if you know what that is. We used to ride into Cleveland all the time to see shows." on "Fuck & Run": "I remember writing this song. I was pretty angry then, but I'm not anymore." I'm going to write a 2nd post to tell you about the chat I had with Liz afterward, so this one doesn't bounce. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Just thought I'd pass that along in case anyone was interested. Jase ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2003 11:10:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Emil Breton Subject: [support-system] Conversation overheard between Liz and, er, ME! I wish I could've heard all the conversations, because Liz was being very cordial and indulged everyone. The folks in front of us asked about Nick, and she said she talks to him everyday and misses him terribly, although every time she calls him all he wants to talk about are computer games: "Oh, wow, you got to the 2nd level? No kidding. You got to use the light-sabre? No way. That's fascinating." Adorable stuff, I have to say. A girl told her she makes her own music now, as a result of being a Liz fan, and the guy behind us told her the same thing ("You're half the reason I started playing guitar"), which prompted Liz to say that she's gotten the whole I-make-music-now-because-of-you spiel more in Cleveland than anywhere else. She attributed it to Ohio boredom and offered encouragement. My girlfriend brought Juvenilia and said "Sorry, I don't really have anything interesting to say." Liz said, "That's okay, neither do I!" Belly laughs all around. Then she said it was great to see Juvenilia, because usually people don't have it (this is a trick I used way back in 1999, the last time I met Liz). Someone asked "What's that? When did you put that out?" and Liz didn't know. She had to look at the back to see the date, and my girlfriend said "Don't you own copies of your own records?" and Liz said "No. People come over to my house and borrow them and never return them." (Uh, okay.) Then she pointed out all the people on the cover (which is a still frame from the "Jealousy" video) and said "That's my ex-boyfriend!" Here's something that should interest Dan MacDonald, if no one else: I brought my "Supernova" CD single, and Liz was again impressed. "What's on here?" she asked, looking at the back, and I said "That's a cool little 'mess' at the end" (referring to "Combo Platter"). Liz asked, with a genuinely quizzical look on her face: "What is it?" And I'm thinking, "You're kidding, right?" So then I had to tell her, "It's 'Johnny Sunshine' backwards, in between 'Money' and..." -- total nervous brain freeze here; I could NOT remember what the other song was -- "...shit, how does it go? Something about... 'now you're sleeping with that girl / that you used to say'..." -- at which point Liz joined in, and we stood there singing this old song together -- "...'that you have always hated / Don't be so in love with yourself...'" Then I laughed nervously, because it was so surreal. A truly heartfelt duet -- you guys should have seen us. Oh, the chemistry! Liz said "I actually tried to re-write that one, for this last album, but it didn't come out so well. That doesn't always work." Then I asked her what's up with the promised internet releases, and she said Dino is going to hook up the computer on their bus to her website (or something to that effect) so that she can put up demos of new songs. We'll see. I told her I love the internet EP, and she thanked me, and I said "'Jeremy Engle' in particular -- it's hilarious!" and she laughed. Then I got very serious and said "It's so great to hear you playing guitar on there. What the hell *happened* with this new record?" And she said "I know, I know, it kills me, too. Producers just don't know what to do with me. Everyone wants to take me out of the songs, and I can't stand it" or something to that effect. "Except for Brad. I wanted to work with him on this one, but the label wouldn't let me." (Go, Capitol.) "Even Michael Penn. Ever since I was 16, people have looked at me said 'RAW TALENT!'" She did this hilariously dramatic hand-gesture, like some visionary imagining the words 'raw talent' displayed in mid-air. "Now I'm 36, and people look at me and say 'RAW TALENT!'" That was pretty hilarious and quick-witted, I thought. Anyway, I told her she has got to put her foot down, and she said "I know, but I'm so bad." And I said "NO! You're *not*. You write all these groovy riffs and stuff." Then she said "Don't worry! Look, I *promise* you" -- and extended her hand, and we had what my girlfriend called a 'gentleman's agreement' handshake -- "on the next record, I'll be there." We'll see. My girlfriend took photos of this affair with her digital camera, but we won't be posting them any time soon. I didn't want to pose with Liz because I'd done that before and last night, believe me, after enduring the humidity of the pit, I smelled worse than a pair of socks at the bottom of a loaded hamper. More funny stuff happened, but I feel like I'm pushing it with the in-depth reporting, so I'll stop. I hope I did a good job. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
