According to Liz, "Never Said" correlates directly with "Tumbling Dice." The songs are supposed to match up exactly, so you could just compare track 5 on Main Street with Track 5 on Guyville. She talked at length about the similarities in theme between "Never Said" and "Dice" (as well as those between "Glory" and "Rip This Joint") on an interview she did in 1993, on Local Anesthetic, a Chicago radio program. Very entertaining. The "Never Said"/"Tumbling Dice" link is kind of tenuous, and I'd say they have more in common musically (both are kind of bombastic and 'joyous') than thematically. He's saying: "I may be around, I may not be. Don't count on it. I'm a rebel, so look out." Liz is saying, "What are you talking about? I never said anything! Do what you want, cowboy." "Glory" is the 'female' answer to "Rip This Joint" in that the Mick Jagger character is 'blowing into town', all 'footloose and fancy free' (with a really big tongue as an ersatz set of Jagger-size lips -- get it?), and Liz is just the girl at the bar who's "lucky" to be graced with his presence. The line "you are shining some glory on me" is, I presume, completely sarcastic, because although it correlates with Jagger's Big Rock Star schtick on Main Street, the person Liz is describing was a Chicago scenester - -- a *local* rock hero (quite perhaps the same subject of "May Queen" and "Strange Loop" ... Liz never revealed this person's identity, but she did record Exile in Guyville in what she described as a "last-ditch wooing effort" and later said that she used him, or his persona, as the male subject in subsequent songs, even though she'd gotten over him by that point). <> Well, this is possible, but you have to remember that Liz never bought records, and really only knew the Stones from their hit singles. She definitely had all the songs written before Exile was recorded (except for maybe "Explain It To Me" and a few others that I believe were written after recording sessions were underway), and clearly many are very Stones-inspired (notably "Six Feet One", "Divorce Song", and "Mesmerizing"), but none were written with that conceptual device in mind. Liz said in that Magnet interview that it may have been an ex-boyfriend who suggested the double-album thing to her, but I'm 95% sure it was Chris Brokaw. He told her, somewhat jokingly, that she ought to release two records at once, because she had so many songs, but she misunderstood him and then went on to format a double-length LP. (She made a joke about him being horrified when he'd learned of this misunderstanding, although, if you ask me, the concept of two-releases-at-once is more horrifying.) A cassette copy of Exile on Main Street had been left behind in her apartment by the previous tenant (this would likely have been *after* sessions with John Henderson had started, because they'd been living together as well as recording together, and then they had their falling-out, and Liz was forced to find her own apartment -- at least that's how I piece it together), and Liz listened to it in a Walkman for roughly a month, familiarizing herself with the album. Then she began the whole process detailed in that recent Magnet interview that Jase pasted here. Hey, this is fun! Obviously, I'm practically *bursting* with excitement for tonight's show at the Agora, and unleashing some of my pent-up, Liz-related geekiness. If you want to look for me, I'll be wearing a plain white t-shirt, khaki shorts, and hanging out (hopefully) in the front-row with my hot-shit girlfriend. See you there. Question for those who live close. I called VV this afternoon to ask if she was signing autographs.(Besides performing). They told me you needed a wristband to see her/get autographs. How do you get a wristband? Must buy her NEW record. But I already have, I said. They said it was the only way. Is this correct? I wouldn't mind buying a few CD's, but not 1 I already have. Can anyone clear this up? Thanks, Bill in CT Oh yea I forgot. I was in Walmart today and saw her new record featured along w/others. I noticed the cover had no warning sticker. When I turned it over I noticed H.W.C. has been erased completely. WTF? Reason #10 I'll never buy a CD from them. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Aug 2003 00:11:49 -0500 From: Larry Sloan Subject: [support-system] St. Louis Show My take on 8/5/03 St. Louis Show at The Pageant I won't waste time on Mraz & Lerche, other than to say both have a lot of talent, just not really my cup of tea. So.... on to Liz. The crowd was mostly girls under age 18, and they were definitely there to see Mraz. It did seem that most did pay attention to Liz during her set, but I doubt she picked up many of them as new fans. Liz came out right at 8:30, wearing a cammo mini skirt, tall black boots, white wife beater top and the "star" Musicmaster as seen on the new cover. As many have said before she looks great. I heard a live radio interview with Liz about 2 hours before the show and she said she felt really good. From her appearance on stage it looked like she really did. She seemed happy and was smiling throughout most of her set. The set was as follows: 1. 6'1 2. Polyester Bride 3. Rock Me - --- Changed to red Musicmaster capoed at 1st fret 4. Divorce Song 5. Help Me Mary - --- Changed to "star" Musicmaster 6. Extraordinary 7. Fuck And Run 8. Favorite 9. Johnny Feelgood - ---Changed to red Musicmaster capoed at 4th fret 10. Why Can't I - ---Changed to tobacco sunburst Telecaster 11. Red Light Fever - ---Changed to "star" Musicmaster 12. Supernova 13. Flower (solo playing guitar) Liz left at 8:40 (total time 50 minutes) There were no encores. I think Liz sounds better than ever and her singing has really come a long way since I saw her on the WCSE tour. You can tell she has really worked hard at it. Not to worry though she still sounds like Liz. She also looks more confident and comfortable on stage. Early in her show Liz mentioned that Jason Mraz had taken picture of himself & guitar in a pose similar to the one on the new LP cover. I think she said she had taped it over her bed. That got a few laughs. She also said right before "Favorite" that she actually did have a favorite pair of underwear that the song was based on, and that she might try to sell them on e-bay if she could find them. I was really surprised how well the Matrix stuff came off. The songs sounded pretty full considering that the band was only a 5 piece and didn't use a lot of effects in concert. The older material was greatly appreciated by the "creepy old fans" in the audience. Overall it was a pretty good show, although it could have lasted longer. The only negative was that I was not particularly impressed with her band. While there were no big screw ups or anything like that, they didn't really seem to me to have very good chemistry with Liz or each other. I thought the WCSE band was a lot better, certainly a lot tighter, but hey maybe these guys will come along as they get in more playing time with Liz. I will still go see them again if I get the chance. My friends and I left after the 3rd Mraz song and headed to our car. We noticed a little group people and some security that looked like they might be on a smoke break, behind the venue. Just as we passed them we heard a little commotion and turned around and guess who pops out. We walked back and Liz was signing a few autographs. I had already bought a signed copy from the Aware store but getting one handed to you from the supergoddess herself is just a little bit better. Thanks Liz. I didn't really get a chance to talk to her but she seemed nice and was smiling the whole time, as the picture my friend Kally snapped can attest to. Sorry just had to gloat a little.
