It is also back on the Taking Off chart at No. 7 and on the Hot AC Chart it is at its highest peak going from No. 14 to No. 13. The video made its Top 10 debut at VH1 this past weekend. Overall, its getting airplay but it's been slow, slow moving but always upward. I still think if Capitol decides to release EXTROADINARY (and they should do it before summer is over) that that song is the song that will take the Liz Phair to the next level. Generally I think people who hear Why Can't I think that its a sweet song and they relate to the lyrics, but it just doesn't have that punch to get them thoroughly interested in who Liz Phair is. Extraordinary is an extraordinary song. I can't stop playing it and Red Light Fever just gets more and more beautiful the more I listen to it and whatever, the lyrics are strong and mature when you get down to the nitty gritty of it all! :) Al __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Even though i feel WCI is one of the weaker songs on the album, I am glad that it finally seems to be turing into a real hit. Billboard picked it as a potential top 10 hit this week as well. Between all of this, WCI slow but steady rise on Bilboard's Adult top 40 chart, and a whole host of charts on Radio &Records, expect it's debut on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart very soon. Then watch it rise there. And after all, how could it be a >song-by-song response, if a percentage of the songs were already written for >Girlysounds? Brad didn't pick the songs for EIG, and the album wasn't _written_ as a song-by-song response to EOMS. Most of the songs were already written. Liz didn't know how to put them together in what she called "a listenable long form," so she used the Stones album is a template by which to sequence her own record, which ultimately determined what songs were recorded and used. She had dozens to choose from, including those on the Girly Sound tapes. She chose the songs that had some parallel to those on EOMS, either in terms of structure, tempo or theme. She talked about this at length in an interview on MTV's 120 Minutes in April 1994. I'd sit down and transcribe it, but I can't locate the tape right now. I'm sure Emil Breton and a few other people may be able to shed some light on it, though. She did also touch upon this in an interview from the June/July issue of Magnet. The relevant excerpt: Is there a favorite record in your collection that you wish you had made? Are you gonna hate me? I don't think I could, Liz. Exile On Main Street. I grifted that off a guy I went on a couple of dates with this fall, and I hadn't heard it since I made [Exile In Guyville], really. It makes my soul soar. I don't know how to explain it. You used to say Exile In Guyville was a song-by-song response to Exile On Main Street. I was always under the impression that was just bullshit and people bought it. Oh my god, no. I absolutely took it dead seriously. I sat around with stacks, like hundreds of pieces of paper -- you have to remember, I was stoned a lot. I was a twentysomething no-job. I hung out playing guitar all day. I had all this education, I thought analytically and someone had made a dare. I think an ex-boyfriend was like, "Well, why don't you do a double album? Why don't you do Exile On Main Street?" And it fit perfectly with what I was pissed about at that time: that no one thought that I could do anything of any value in the musical sense. So I just thought the bigger the mountain, the more motivation I had to climb it. I still have that problem. I had little symbols, each song would be listed, and I would do the songs on Exile, the one with the little symbols next to them, there was one with a kind of asterik, I can't remember. That was a pop song, and then a long, wavy line meant a slow song, a cross was another kind of song, a rocker was diagonal lines sort of like on Charlie Brown's shirt. The symbols went so far as to be both in terms of musical style and also content, like if it was a depressing song about sorrow or angst or something, there was an arrow pointing from the top-left down to the bottom-right. So you put them all on little index cards that you kept arranging? Yeah, I went nuts with it. I can't tell you. We would go into the studio, and I'd be like, "You have to have this big guitar solo three-quarters of the way through because that's what Exile On Main Street has." And the lyrics had to be an answer or my equivalent. It had to either be putting him in his place, like if he was talking about walking down the street, and he's talking about he's mister footloose and fancy free, doesn't meet anybody who gives a damn. I had to write a song about how much pain you could cause someone with that kind of attitude. Or I'd write my own song about walking down the street, being footloose and fancy free and not giving a damn. It either had to be the equivalent from a female point of view or it had to be an answer kind of admonishment, to let me tell you my side of the story. No wonder it's such a good album -- I put so much into it and uninterrupted attention, it was like a doctoral thesis. If you look through the articles on Ken's site, I'm sure there are at least a few others where she talks about the structual link between the two albums at length. And after all, how could it be a > song-by-song response, if a percentage of the songs were already written for > Girlysounds? > > james Some of the songs are more "responsive" than others. I seem to recall that "Never Said" struck me as being very related to one of the Stones' tracks... can't remember which. Honestly, I've never taken the time to really do the song-by-song comparison thing, and I've only listened to EOM once all the way through. Anyway, I don't think that the fact that at least 1/3 of the tracks were written before the "concept" album was... err, conceived, precludes those pre-written songs from being relevant. I think we can assume that Liz had been listening to EOM for quite a long time, and some of it may have been playing around in her subcon when she wrote some of the GirlySound tracks... in fact, that may be how the whole format came to her. She may have realized one day that such-and-such song was a lot like a female response to one of the Stones' songs, and then it hit her... "hey! I could do my whole album like that... it would give me a structure to work with." So maybe she picked the songs from her back-catalogue that were both her favorites and worked with the concept. Incidentally, in writing this I typed out all the EIG tracks and organized them into GirlySound (first group) and non-GirlySound (second), just so I could get it straight in my head how many there were exactly. It works out to exactly 1/3 GirlySound tracks: Soap Star Joe * Fuck and Run * Divorce Song * Flower * Johnny Sunshine * Stratford-On-Guy 6'1 * Help Me Mary * Glory * Dance of the Seven Veils * Never Said * Explain It To Me * Canary * Mesmerizing * Girls! Girls! Girls! * Shatter * Gunshy * Strange Loop Anyway, if Wood was handpicking all of the songs to make it to the album, isn't that tantamount to saying that the EOM concept album is a fairy story? Ouch! Is that what you're saying, james? - --Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2003 22:41:00 EDT From: TitleTK@aol.com Subject: Re: [support-system] Re: A Liz Question for All In a message dated 8/5/03 9:45:04 PM Eastern Daylight Time, catherinemolanphy@earthlink.net writes: << Anyway, if Wood was handpicking all of the songs to make it to the album, isn't that tantamount to saying that the EOM concept album is a fairy story? Ouch! Is that what you're saying, james? >> Obviously, I've been proven wrong. But here was my rationale . . . I believe that EIG sounds quite a bit like EOM, that is, the production sounds like the Stones, kind of that gritty, bluesy type thing (which I love by the way). But when I really study the songs closely I don't see any thematic linkage. Liz has talked about the production being all Brad Wood (she stated that in an interview not too long ago). So in my mind if the thematic elements don't add up, but the production does, it was really Brad pushing the EOM concept. But I suppose none of this matters in retrospect. And I admit some of the songs do have a similar flow to them. That being said, I want to go back and give both albums another thorough listen. In the meantime, let's hope her next album surely does resemble a doctoral thesis. james P.S. Does anyone remember the rumor going around about the time of EIG that Liz was actually Mic Jagger's love child? Obviously 100% untrue, but this conversation brought back some memories of that. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2003 22:55:42 -0500 From: "jz" Subject: [support-system] FS: Metro 8/23 (Sat) Tix face value Hi everyone: Long time lurker here.
