Let me start by saying I was thrilled to drive 5 hours to see Liz and would do it again and again and again and again. First, I think her drummer is absolutely the worst drummer I've ever heard on a major label supported tour. The bass player was great (Lakeland 4 & 5, some other old semi-hollow) as were the keyboards, the guitar (Tele & Gibson 135) , marginal, but hell I'm sure it was a challenge playing with a drummer who struggled to find the down beat all night. Supernova was so f'n fast the guitar player had to cut way back on the solo and Liz could hardly keep up. Several others were too fast as well. Overall the band sucked a**. Liz was obviously not "into" the performance - definitely NOT the same Liz that's on the bootlegs I've heard from other concerts this year. Vocal mic never was turned up enough to hear her clearly. Lots of odd silence between songs. I was impressed however, with Liz's guitar playing (and it was 1 Tele and 2 Mustangs, never saw a Strat), but I wish she wouldn't change guitars every f'n song...so distracting. Sondre Lerche was very impressive - one guy & a Gibson 135 knock-off. As for Jason Mraz, once you get past the low riding, strategically faded jeans and the mesh trucker hat turned backwards this guy is fantastic. I agree that he's somewhere between Dave Matthews and John Mayer, but this kid is the real deal. I sure wanted to hate him because all the kids went so nuts over him, but the kid can play a mean guitar and holy s**t has he got a great voice. He's overflowing with talent once you get past the teen heart throb thing, he's got amazing stage presence and his band blew Liz off the stage, I'm sad to say. They played amazingly well together for a first record band. I hope her drummer took note, but I'm guessing he was back stage doing crack. With Liz, if you didn't know the tunes you were most likely bored to tears, I'd never heard this Mraz dude and was totally taken in & really did NOT want to be. This was my third live Liz & by far the worst, but even at that, pretty damn great. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2003 09:55:01 -0400 From: "John Mullaney" Subject: RE: [support-system] Dallas Show I have been staying quiet on all the Jason Mraz bashing here being a huge Liz fan myself for years. But I have had the opportunity to work with him in a small radio station recording in front of fans a while back when his hit was brand new. I walked away from that session a complete fan. He has something. It's a very catchy lyric style and an energy in all his songs. He is going to be big. I get the chance to work with many new acts and don't get blown away often but as David says below this guy is the real deal. It was a Liz live broadcast like this that a got a chance to work at years ago that made me a fan of her as well. I only which Jason was playing with her here in Boston but here they are separate shows and I will be at both of them. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-support-system@smoe.org [mailto:owner-support-system@smoe.org] On Behalf Of INMAN, DAVID B Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 9:20 AM To: support-system@smoe.org Subject: RE: [support-system] Dallas Show Also attended the Dallas show. Subject: [support-system] liz "b-sides" [What is your favorite Liz song that doesn't instantly come to mind?] i vote for the following: "alice springs," "nashville," and "dogs of LA." all on whip-smart, i just noticed. that disk is seriously underrated. i also give "white bird of texas" a huge thumbs-up. dp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Aug 2003 13:46:06 -0400 From: Jase Subject: [support-system] "Explain it to Me" on new soundtrack For all the completists out there, Liz's "Explain it to Me" appears on the soundtrack _Thirteen_, which is being released on August 19. Jase ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Aug 2003 16:06:11 -0400 From: Jase Subject: [support-system] Just occured to me... With "Explain it to Me" coming out on that soundtrack in a couple of weeks, the claims that the _Guyville_ master tapes are missing seems a little fishy. How exactly are they going about licensing tracks from that album if the masters can't be located? I think Liz is being fed a lot of b.s. by her label. As someone else speculated recently, it seems like Capitol just doesn't want to do the _Guyville_ reissue. "'I'm in a win-win situation,' Phair says. 'If this record goes, I can do things on my own. But if this record doesn't go, then Capitol will drop me because of the amount of money they've spent on it.'" Again, my apologies if it's been posted, but it gives me hope about the future recordings of Liz Phair if she's aware that her present label kinda sucks.
