I had to work all day today, but I can assure you, Liz has been on mind. Thanks to everyone who replied to me with tips on how to meet her, it worked! I got to talk to her for about 5 minutes before the show and take pictures, etc. I brought her a tub of cotton candy from where I work (I make all of the cotton candy at Six Flags) because it says, "It's Sweet!" on the container. She actually chuckled at that when she saw it and sang a line from the song, showing we were on the same page. It was cute. When I first saw her she was with her tour manager taking out some trash and boxes. No, she's definitely NOT too normal for me. Sondre Loche (sp?) went on first, he was so adorable. Little Norwegian fella with the most adorable accent and powerful music. He was kinda silly, but it really worked for him. Jazz chords and emo-esque lyrics... It rocked. Liz came out at about 8:30 in ripped blue jean shorts and a green shirt that said "Fate." She looked HOT! Better than the last Dallas show with that annoying hat (although the underwear without pants made up for that I suppose). Liz came out without much fanfare, everyone I talked to at the show was there for Mraz, a bunch of kids. Kinda dissapointing. Although, me being only 18, I guess there isn't much difference in age. Oh well, can't win them all. Set list was as follows: 6'1" WCSE Stratford-On-Guy -- "Allright guys, I'm taking one" and then played solo. Mesmerizing Rock Me Never Said Little Digger -- She cried again, it was pretty powerful. Glory Help Me Mary Why Can't I? -- She teared up a bit here too, weird. Johnny Feelgood Polyester Bride Divorce Song HWC -- I was standing in the very front with a small group of Liz fans and we all shouted out HOT WHITE CUM, Liz giggled and said "Ok kids, cover your ears." Uncle Alvarez Perfect World Extraordinary Supernova The band was really together, they rocked so much more than any other live bootleg I have heard of her. I wish her vocal mic had been louder, but oh well. Derek, from the Starlight Mints, was playing keyboards up on a platform. I got to talk to him before the show too, he was really nice. After Supernova Liz just kinda left. She didn't seem that into it, but te vibes Liz got were so incredibly different from the energy that was in the crowd for Mraz. I stayed for a couple of songs and then left. Anyways, I've got some pictures of Liz, do you want them Ken? Anyone? She's so gorgeous... Enough for now! Erin Yahoo! First off - the setlist (from what I can remember). I know I'm wrong on the order, so someone else who was there PLEASE post the correct one... and I may have forgotten a few due to beer: 6'1" Polyester Bride Divorce Song Rock Me Help Me Mary Johnny Feelgood Fuck and Run Why Can't I? HWC Extraordinary Supernova Liz was wearing a half quasi-80s deco and half solid purple top with a jean skirt. The shirt had an oval in the center of her chest and was definitely see-through. Not much left to the imagination, but also tasteful. The sound of the band was very different from the acoustic sound of the Lips tour shows... sometimes for better and sometimes for not as good. The huge sound on the opener was amazing though - such a hook and further proof that 6'1" is a natural opener. At the same time I missed hearing Perfect World and Why Can't I seemed to be solidly there as "the single." Dino, the guitar player, is getting much more comfortable with the music and Liz is digging it. He did an extended guitar solo/break at the end of Divorce Song that was simply amazing. Liz had a huge, almost giddy, smile on her face the whole time. I really like his playing the more I see and hear it - very complimentary and creative without upshowing what Liz has created. I really like him as a band member. She made the same joke about the predictive songs - Divorce, having a child, and then about winning the lottery. No encore... crap-tacular. There was a fairly big time frame between her and Jason, so there should have been one. The crowd was much more into Mr. Mraz who didnt' do too much for me. He started his set out very well - very lively and not too bad, but after a while he went into what seemed like an hour of slow whining that made me and a lot of people I saw just start to yawn. He brought it back out and then did whatever the radio song was... and we left... who knows. While talking BS with the bartender he said that he heard Mraz played for over two hours the night before in Dallas and I didn't care to find out. It was a great show and I was there with great people, so all is well. We're lucky to have such a goddess. She's also gotten hold of a world-class hair stylist since I last saw her. The setlist was similar to the Dallas list described by David Crider yesterday, but a little shorter. Again, no encore. She seemed in a pretty decent mood, the new songs do indeed work very well in concert, and there were a few real highlights (especially a fine Help Me Mary) but overall this was definitely the flattest of the four Liz shows I've seen over the years. Liz is clearly more sensitive to her audience than most other performers, and I think the main problem was a very high infusion of teenyboppers who came solely because they're infatuated with Jason Mraz. Jason is not a breath of fresh air, and I drove back to San Antonio after he played a few songs. The secondary problem was that Liz' band just wasn't tight. Hopefully, they were only having an off night, and my creeping suspicion that they were chosen largely on the basis of eye candy appeal is as unfounded as it is uncharitable. Time will tell - she'll be back next month without Mr. Mraz for the Austin City Limits Festival, and I can't wait to hear how she'll perform in front of a more Liz-centric audience. For me it's "Canary" and "Beginning to See the Light." I connected to Canary when I was going through a crappy period and BTSTL was unlike other Liz songs I had heard before I got her bootlegs. I think it has to do with her voice, since she usually sang with a low tone. The song is more of a lullabye, but yet, it's not. I've been enjoying the concert reviews people have posted. Wish I had one to share of my own, but will be seeing Michelle Branch at an MTV taping this Tuesday. I could careless if I get on tv, I'm going for the music. Hrmm... difficult question because the song takes a while to come to mind... ;^) Okay, there's two GirlySound songs that I love because they're so gutwrenching and bombastic: **Do You Love Me?** First off, I lovelovelove it when Liz "samples" hooks and lyrics from other songs. We should compile a list of her musical references. (Actually, I think someone did, years ago.) And it has one of my all-time favorite Liz lyrics: "Speak softly and use... that... big stick..." **I Know It's Not Easy** I forget this song a lot because the beginning of it is so draggy and miserable, but ultimately that's what makes it fantastic because it builds to a super angry, desperate climax: "I look at the stars and I know you're un-der them / I look at the cars and I know you insure them / I look at the books and things people are reading / I know that you've written them, too / You've got so many little things to do..." Oh man, it's brilliant... she just spits those lines out with great deadpan venom, especially the line about "so many little things to do". Back when I still had a CD player in my car I would drive at night and just sing along to that ending at the top of my tinny little lungs: "Cuz' I'm endlessly, endlessly searching the crowd / Looking for something from you / Just one fucking measly clue / Any shitty little tipoff would do / But I'm just an ant in Alaska to you." Oh man, I'd love to be able to play guitar and just belt out those lines. Phew! I'm sure there are others, but none of them are coming to mind at the moment... :^) - --Catherine ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #207 ************************************
