(the past 4 liz shows i've gotten closer and closer to actually meeting her, w/o going stalker on her or anything). first guy is named patrick parker (i think). kind of generic laid back whiteboy acoustic thing. not terrible, not compelling. liz comes out w/ band. same "dino" guy that played acoustic for her on the lips tour. bass player, drummer, and keyboard guy. no backup singer, and i think that's good too, b/c liz's voice sounded really full and bright and not wobbly at all. her new band rocks. and is about 50X better than the wcse band. just rocking, and letting loose (no dumb suits and liz in evening gowns, now she's wearing mini-skirts, tall leather boots, and a halter top thingy--she looked hot). i am in the second row of people stage left of liz's mic in the center of stage. opens w/ whitechocolatespacegg. during the "i'll see you around" part, she sees me and points at me, and sings an entire chorus of it to me. that was awesome. next plays uncle alvarez. not sure the order of the following songs, but she played: mesmerizing, never said, johnny feelgood, why can't i, extraordinary, rock me, help me mary, glory, 6'1", perfect world, divorce song, polyester bride. before she sings little digger she says, "this is a song that means a lot to me" or something, and then cries a little at the end. she sings an a cappella verse off "south dakota" during a guitar change as per request. sings "as god as my squirrell" and says, "that's the kind of lyrics you write when you're 19." last song introduces as "this is my best song." and plays supernova. during the set, people are screaming "i love you!" and she says, "really, it's great to be back on tour headlining, and this is just so great, and right back at you. i love you guys." and then she cried a little. she was pretty happy and emotional the whole time to be feeding off of us. she did not play any other songs but supernova from whip smart. that sucked. i also wish she played firewalker. i also think she could turn only son into a crazy sonic youth noisy rocker, but these are wishes. she come out for the encore. plays "one new, one old." hot white cum, w/ the keyboard guy from wallflowers playing along. was that the guy from last tour? maybe. then plays fuck and run. we are screaming, etc. about 1/3 of the people leave. the stage hands are breaking down all the equipment, but leave one mic and one amp. liz's gear is still up there, we are screaming for a good 5-10 minutes, she comes back out, and the place is flipping out. she says, "i had to compose myself back there, this is so overwhelming." i think she cries a little bit again. plays stratford-on-guy and then invites 3 people on stage to sing harmony to flower. i hate it when people say this on the list, but i think it was the best liz show i've ever been to (out of 5). not optimal set list, but great energy, and the band was great. very rocking it sort of was like when brad and casey would do the falsetto--did not miss janet rains one bit. plus having liz come out and just play guitar by herself is always so old school and awesome. i hope you guys appreciate this, b/c it's fucking late, and i have to go to work tomorrow morning. i'm just still so up from the show, that i had to let you guys know what happened. john. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. So hi everyone. Here's the sob story: I live in the Washington area and when the tickets for Liz and Jason Mraz at the 9:30 Club went on sale, I changed my vacation plans to be able to come home early and see it, then I started trying to get some people to come see it with me. A few days later, the show is sold out, and I have no tickets. Words cannot describe the pain. I'm not being melodramatic. I saw Liz perform once, at Lilith Fair in 1998, and I hadn't heard her before then and the bass was too loud so I wasn't very impressed. Then I heard Exile in Guyville. I promised myself that the next time she was in town I'd see her perform. Five years went by. Finally, she's back in town. And I can't see her. Does anyone have an extra ticket or two to this show? I will pay any and all charges, shipping, etc. I know this is a long shot, but I thought I'd at least try... Oh, and by the way...to anyone who was curious about the Sheryl-Crow-looking picture in the Washington Post article...I was wondering about it myself, so I looked it up and found the picture on a Sheryl Crow website. Good job on the fact-checking. On a lark, I wrote to the author of the article (since there hadn't been a correction in the paper or the online edition), but I didn't hear back from him. But who cares, because music means nothing right? I mean, it's only the > soundtrack to our lives. > I'm with you on the less-accepted spelling of cum, but you lost credibility for me on the "song is not good, on the whole" tip. Why'd you imbed such a clearly subjective statement in the middle of an otherwise lucid refutation of her arguments? Nitpicky of me, perhaps, but you must realize that as soon as you incorporate those sorts of nonsensical nuggets into your prose, the whole thing takes on the air of "I'm right, you're wrong 'cuz you have no taste, go piss" and it's the kind of thing that transforms debating into flaming. Redeem yourself... *what* exactly don't you like about H.W.C.? The melody? The words? Cite examples. Sorry to sound like a remedial expository writing teacher, but you get my drift. For the record, here's what *I* like about H.W.Cum: It's catchy... it's the very first song I was singing to myself during the workday after I'd listened to the album. I especially like that pretty downward trilling on the lyric "Fa-a-a-ace it... one of these days..." I love the harmonica solo, but then I guess I'm a bit of a sucker for harmonica. I like the simple rhythmic guitar strumming. I like the understated backing vocals on the chorus. While some of the lyrics are not her most inspired ("I'm gonna pull you back down between the sheets," in particular), some of them are clever and do a great job of developing the song's theme "Baby, you're the best magazine advice..." I don't interpret as being tongue-in-cheek... it's sort of the sum-up of the song, which, in my interpretation, is this, "All this bullshit you read in magazines about dying your hair and getting a pedicure and a massage and carrying a logo bag... none of it holds a candle to how beautiful you feel and are when you're getting laid and enjoying it." I don't think that statement is meant to be a joke at all... I agree with her! Sex is a great cure-all and beautifier. If she indeed said in an interview that it was meant tongue-in-cheek, I tend to think that was embarrassment and back-pedaling. Or maybe not... I'm just saying that when I listen to it, it doesn't hit me as being ironic at all. The mood of the song is not an ironic one... it's simple and happy. Listen... sex can make you feel different ways. H.W.C. is an afterglow song... Flower is a frustrated and horny song... which is why it's all monotone and repetitive and ominously angry. Both are sincere. They're so musically different it's almost pointless to compare their merits on that score, but one is certainly welcome to try. And here I'm gonna go out on a dangerous limb and put forth my 2 theories of why certain people react so violently to H.W.C.: 1) On the surface, it smacks of a craven attempt to live up to her dirty-girl rep. Before I heard the song, I had a similar reaction upon hearing the title for the first time... I specifically remember groaning inwardly and thinking, "C'mon, Liz... don't pander. Don't turn your simple and honest lyrics into a marketing gimmick... you're too talented to be hawking yourself as the Giver of Hard-Ons... (At Least *One* With Every Album!!!)" But then I heard the song and I smiled and realized I'd sold her short. Maybe I'm being judgemental here, but is it *possible* that some of the HWC-haters just got stuck on an idea and wouldn't let go? I hate to think there are people out there who approach music that way, but maybe they do. In fact, I *know* some people approach music that way. I guess I just hoped they weren't Liz Phair fans. 2) Okay, I know some people are gonna go all "feminazi!" on my ass with this one, but here goes: the dark tone of "Flower" made it more acceptable to listeners (male and female alike) because its very darkness implies a certain reprehensible-ness in the base desire for meaningless sex. Same with Chopsticks... that one's not inflammatory because in that song Liz is clearly *depressed* about her "lurid" encounters. In HWC, any remnants of guilt or despondency have vanished. The bouncy, sunny melody speaks its own volumes... this is no dirty-girl crawling out of the cement and sheepishly admitting her tendencies... this is a woman who's just pleased as punch to be having sex and is just like, "Yay for this! Yay for me!" See, I think as a (I'm about to use the s-word) society we still get all squirmy about that sort of untinctured enjoyment of fornication, no matter how sex-obsessed we are, or maybe because of it. And yes... yeah, here we go... it's even LESS acceptable for a chick to take that much unapologetic delight in the nasty. Whew... I said it. Sorry, Jeremy... not all of that of course was directed at you. I just got into my topic. But seriously, if I'm wrong and HWC is indeed dogshit, let's talk about it. But, like... let's *talk* about it... - --Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 14:54:23 -0700 From: Kenneth Lee Subject: Liz / Performing Songwriter / Spin / SF show Hello again, Just added the July/August "Performing Songwriting" and August "Spin" articles. Are you still bitter at Yoko for supposedly breaking up the Beatles? > http://www.eastbayexpress.com/issues/2003-07-16/music.html/1/index.html This is a VERY interesting article...so many reviews/articles have been posted and i've been skipping the most recent batch because they all say the same thing. but this one is a must-read "in defense of Liz" article...if anything, just to balance out all the bashing. There is lots of BS included (what was that crap about liz's "spurts of creativity" in her youth? Huh?) and I am not sure if I buy her argument, but the writer does make many valid points that I didn't really consider before. steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 20:12:43 -0700 From: ewest Subject: Re: Liz / Performing Songwriter / Spin / SF show anyone know what the star symbol on Liz's guitar means? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 23:14:58 -0400 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: oh baby - know what yer like? can't wait for courtney's new one... as far as liz...i think with all the songs she has leaked - and all the songs she is planning on leaking over the next few months - she's kind of releasing the album we've all been expecting, in a lo-fi kinda way. i sort of just let myself get into her a songs a wee little bit - and i have come to look at it this way: in 1993 - when i was listening to Madonna, Prince and the Bangles, i discovered Liz and Exile in Guyville made me feel like a grown up. it changed my musical taste - opened up a whole new world, made me appreciate stuff i would have otherwise skimmed over.. "Liz Phair" in the same way - has kind of made me a kid again - it did the reverse. who gives a shit if it's not "indie" or under-produced to sound like something that we have niched liz phair into? everyone has a guilty pleasure when it comes to music - and the problem is - there really shouldn't be such a thing as a "guilty pleasure" when it comes to music. why feel guilty? why not just say "fuck it" and blare it if you like it? of course - everyone has the right to hate it - but i think i was just so used to this style of music, that when i heard something that sounded a little too mainstream - and a little too radio-friendly, i was afraid to turn it up and sing along. why? now i'm just kinda saying "shit - why not?" i appreciate this album in a different way than i appreciate her other stuff. it'll for sure stand out as one of the weirdest liz phair albums ever. and yeah - i hope this isn't going to mark her going Vitamin C on our asses, but i think it's safe to say (especially with the newer songs leaking out) the old liz won't go away. now - on the other hand - i still think if she got rid of "the underwear song" and "why can't i" - the album would be much more comfortable to listen to. but my opinion of it is sooo up and down...it literally changes everyday - and from the sound of her recent interviews - it looks like liz's does as well. laters, dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 20:44:25 -0700 From: ewest Subject: Re: oh baby - know what yer like? what songs has she leaked??? and what is she planing to??
