["dana p." Subject: Veruca Salt, Liz and cum Covering a whole bunch of questions and ideas. Sally asked earlier in the week: >H.W.C. (Liz is joking in that song right? I mean the best magazine >advice...???) The basis of the song is from a scientific study about a year ago that focused on the beneficial qualities of semen on the female body. It found that women who swallow had better immune systems than those who don't. Liz has stretched the truth somewhat with its Fountain Of Youth qualities, but that could be Liz saying lots of hot and steamy sex is a great way of staying young, or at least young at heart. Who can argue with that? Catherine said on the same day: >Subject: red light fever fever > >Okay, now I like this song a LOT. The production on LP is a little too >sweetly slick, but it doesn't completely ruin it. Having listened to the album on headphones during the week, I couldn't help but notice many of the songs, especially the Matrix songs layer Liz's vocals extensively. A fuller vocal sound can never really harm Liz, but it does remove the rawness we have come to expect in the past. On the songs where Liz sounds like the Liz of old (mainly the ones she produces herself) or where production has looked grab attention, you hear the singular Liz. Back to Sally who saw Veruca Salt in Melbourne last Wednesday. If you were wanting to ask Louise if Bastard was still going ahead, if it does it'll be without her as she had "creative differences" with Courtney about a year ago. To answer Sherly's question about VS, I did see them play Sydney last Thursday and spoke to Stephen, Jimmy and the new bassist, Maree after the show. I did mean to ask them if they had material for a new album or if they were going to tour the U.S. but plain forgot. The one new song Louise played solo was called "Waking Up Dead". Regardless of new material, I have heard they are looking for a new label as Beyond never did much for them. The only reason they have done an Australian tour at all was due to a concerted campaign from a few fans here that got Resolver released 2.5 years after its release in the States. Now to work Liz into all this talk about Veruca Salt, as we know Nina Gordon split and went solo a few years back putting out an album on Warner, which was a big departure from Geffen. Not only that, but she went from being an alt-rock goddess to pop princess. Sound familiar? Her album never really took off and she hasn't been heard from since. I received word the other day from a reliable source that Nina has material for a new album already produced but can't find a label. Could this be the future for Ms. Phair? Food for thought. First of all, Phair worked us into this gradually, with each successive album getting poppier, so we all kind of saw it coming. With Gordon, she split from this relatively hard-rockin' band and wanted to be come a pop princess with the snap of her fingers. Also, Phair has more staying power. People know of Veruca Salt, but did people outside of their fans really know who Nina Gordon was? Liz Phair was always by herself and I think for most, her name is at least recognizable. Lastly, the new Phair album blows the Nina Gordon album into pieces. james ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jul 2003 14:12:36 -0700 From: "dana p." Subject: i actually could be "stacy's mom".... >>ditto, ditto, ditto, can't get the thing out of my cd player<< i know! and do they not have the *best* opening lines? "is that supposed to be a poker face or did someone get run over by a train?...", "he was killed by a cellular phone explosion...", "standing on a planter in the port authority, waiting for my bus to come...", "drivin' on the lawn, sleepin on the roof, drinkin' all the alcohol... all the kids from school will be naked in the pool...." excellent. plus i always dig their incessant tri-state references. i love these guys. i heard their live shows are great. speaking of live shows, i'm sincerely bummed i missed duran duran.... like, almost as much as when i missed the stones tour in '81. i'm not kidding. [or their '75 tour or whenever that was. i was a bit young for that one, but still.... what was i thinking?] some shows you just *gotta* see. anyway, i always thought duran duran really had it all figured out, and i always thought they were unfairly maligned for being good looking--and, yeah, selling an obscene amount of records. but so what?? hey, they played and they won. kudos to them for getting out there after all this time. have you ever heard john taylor give an interview? that guy is a fucking riot. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #193 ************************************
