Thought it was Avril, then recognized the chorus. Still haven't heard her on the radio or seen the video played anywhere. By Barry Divola Hell hath no fury like a critic scorned. Reading reviews of Liz Phair's new album, you'd think that not only has she the 36-year-old US singer-songwriter disappointed every music journalist in the Western world, but she cheated on each and every one of them. With their best friend. And then she wrote a song boasting about it. Granted, her fourth album, Liz Phair (Capitol, 50 min), is no Exile in Guyville, the 1993 debut that pretty much provided the blueprint for every second grrl with an attitude and an amplifier for the next decade. It seems Phair's biggest sin is "going pop" and-on four tracks-hooking up with the Matrix, the "evil" trio of songwriter-producers responsible for Avril Lavigne's world domination. But you know what? Apart from the songs sounding bigger and shinier (and here's a dirty word: catchier), Phair's music hasn't taken an about-face on par with Jewel's latest make-over. It's a well-reported fact that Phair separated from her husband before recording, a! nd the fall-out is all over the disc, from the tingling buzz of impending infidelity on the swooping "Why Can't I?" to a kid coming to terms with mum's new boyfriend in the touching "Little Digger." And Phair definitely hasn't lost her flair for sly humour and in-your-face sexuality- in "Rock Me" she has a fling with a guy nine years her junior who "(doesn't) even know who Liz Phair is", while "H.W.C.", whose full title refers to a male bodily fluid, espouses the health benefits of regularly rolling between the sheets. Sure, "Firewalker" plods, and "Favorite," a silly song that compares an old relationship with a favourite piece of underwear, suffers from metaphor-fatigue by the second verse, but a few misfires shouldn't exile Phair to Avril-ville. B+ This is a pretty good review coming from this guy. Although I still don't find this album to be a catchy pop album but ah well, each to their own. Lor - I saw VS in Melbourne, Australia and no, sorry I don't know if they're releasing anything soon. Also whoever (apologies) talked about the earnings in rock vis a vis men vs women, it's a shame that women in rock don't make nearly as much as men nor do they receive critical acclaim to the extent that men do nor recognition or even just respect. Maybe one day, things will change, hopefully in our lifetime. And no, I don't think it's pretentious to not listen to the radio - what's pretentious about that? I don't, just listen to my cds which admittedly has seriously abetted my cd-buying addiction but oh well, why buy clothes when you can buy cds???
