Mmm hmm! oh yeah! dewaine writes: << No, the "thing" is, rock music primarily serves two purposes: to make listeners feel like they are cool and smart, and to make money. >> hmmm...i don't know if i agree with this completely. i just caught the gossip a few weeks back two nights in a row. it was real, simple, dirty rock and roll - and it was just absolutely mind-blowing. beth the lead singer was pretty much in a trance the entire time she was on stage - and managed to suck the entire crowd of 40 or so people into the same state of hypnosis. they might be making a living - just by touring so extensively, but they sure aren't raking in the dough, and they sure weren't trying to "look" cool. it was all about the music - anyone who sees them play can tell you this.the same could be said for bands like Patti Smith, Tracy Chapman, Paul Simon, Breeders, Neil Young, shit...i could literally go on all day. i think it all goes back to the way people perceive music. i can't believe it only serves one or two basic purposes. sure it makes some people feel cool. to others it can be just popping in a rick astley cassette and doing housework (my mom). others might just like it because they buy into how "hot" justin timberlake is.others might like it just to dance at bars to - and nothing more. the SADDEST quote i heard this year was on MTV and it was about "song-writers" - and the "expert" actually said that if Bob Dylan came along today, he probably wouldn't get signed. i don't believe that for a second - but the fact that it was actually said is brutally disgusting. the problem today is - the lines between artist and song-writer and "hot" are being blurred - and it's terrifyingly dangerous. i guess when it comes down to it - some people's lives are for real - Just Music. it's sad to say rock is just there to make people feel cool and make money - because it means a lot more than that to waaay too many people. okay i just lost my train of thought completly. ooops! dan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2003 10:29:19 -0500 From: "INMAN, DAVID B" Subject: RE: support-system-digest V6 #188 I'm confused, if I get satellite radio will I be more or less pretentious? - -----Original Message----- From: sandra [mailto:mesmerizing@earthlink.net] Sent: Wednesday, July 16, 2003 10:36 PM To: support-system@smoe.org Subject: Re: support-system-digest V6 #188 > This is going to sound very pretentious, but I don't listen to the radio at > all. HA! this makes one pretentious? then i'm as pretentious as the day is long. i don't listen to the radio largely because in this godforsaken part of the country the only thing i can find is either in spanish or playing toby keith. i had to go to a record store listening station to finally hear "complicated" -- and that was only a few months ago. busy, isolated, chasing after a toddler ... but not pretentious. =) sandra ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2003 12:01:51 -0400 From: Catherine Molanphy Subject: Re: [radio listening] I just meant... As I recall, WCSE was either out of the Top 100 by its 3rd week or was close to being out of it. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! It was a fairly pointless half-hour collection of videos from "girls who kick ass", including Eve feat. Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliott, the White Stripes (too bad Liz didn't get a chance to comment on that one) and the hostess herself ("Why can't I"). Liz talked about the making of her video: it was shot in a single day, and she had poison oak all over her arms (that's why she's wearing arm warmers in every shot). "Hooray for having the day off ...I guess" I said to myself. I'm sure MTV2 will be re-airing it, but it's nothing special. Just like that much-ballyhooed SXSW "interview" a few months ago. Liz sounded very girly and un-special, but she did manage to confuse viewers (I'm sure) with her remark "WOW! ...as Andy Slater says", after a clip of the Mandy Moore movie that features "WCI". __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? One quote I found interesting was this: "There's a song that I am going to put out soon called "Don't Apologize," and that is [written from] the perspective of my ex-husband looking at me." I was kind of disappointed that "Don't Apologize" didn't make the album, so I'm glad to hear that a studio version of it will be released after all. I'm just curious, though, has anyone heard what it will be coming out on (soundtrack, compilation, the Web site, b-side on a single, etc.)?
