Mraz says "Playing shows with artists like Liz Phair, someone who I've admired artistically for years, is such a treat. I have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure it isn't all a dream." The "Remedy" singer adds that "as great as Dave Matthews and John Popper and some of the other guys I've played with are, you've got to admit that Liz is much prettier." Next up for the singer is a headlining gig at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento on July 23. He'll then be opening for Alanis Morissette on July 26 in Costa Mesa, California. Mraz's co-headlining stint with Liz Phair begins July 30 at the Paramount Theatre in Denver. from undercover.com: Jason Mraz is well known for slipping in a few bizarre covers into his setlist. On this tour he is doing Christina Aguilera. "We've actually started doing some Christina Aguilera as well as some NAS.I just throw in random pop tunes. I can be Jason Timberlake" he tells Undercover News. With a major US tour coming up with the likes of Bon Jovi and Liz Phair Jason says he isn't game to perform a song from someone he is touring with. "That is something I have never done with an artist I am on tour with" he says. "Do we play an old Liz Phair tune or slip in a classic Bon Jovi? The room is full of Bon Jovi fans or Liz Phair fans so you'd have to do it correctly". ===== - ------------------------------------------------------------ Supernova Discussion Board http://supernova.board.dk3.com/2/ - ------------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I don't think it was to attract any particular market by putting it at 6a.m. as they seemed to change the whole format that night. I guess this weekend will prove that, but I don't like this new way of doing things. >That really saddens me, Liz being made into a Holly Valance, bloody hell. Are any listers who check such sites searching for these other unreleased songs 24/7--pleaaazzzzzeee? I'm wondering if many of the others are alternate versions of cuts on the cd already (a la redlight fever) or completely new. Kot's comments suggested they were new, which would be great--if they could be located. Judging from wcse, there should be at least 4 or 5 unused cuts--if not a few more. I wonder if the tracks from the roughcuts and applestore song were ones that got bumped for the matrix songs. Insanity, downstream/intherapids, and Tellme/I'm a liar could have been part of that "nice, little cd" mentioned before the matrices appeared. In any case--how are the searches going? Liz has talked about possibly making some of these songs available later on, but i wouldn't count on it. in any case, some of them are pretty dark in tone, but they suggest that she's still capable of writing songs with some depth, unlike much of what's on "Liz Phair." Fantasize I believe refers to the Urge Overkill guy mentioned in Nashville. Liz mentioned in an interview that at the time people had been whispering about a possible relationship between them, which Liz simultaneously denies and admits to accepting the fantasized possibility of in Fantasize. I think she mentioned Friend of Mine was also about an old flame as well in one of the inteviews on the new one, though I initially thought it might apply to the situation with her ex as well. I'm not sure she ever did have anything more than a friendship with Nashville, but for some reason I also thought of him as a potential underwear candidate (as in favorite). I have a feeling, though, Liz goes through a lot of relationships when she's in a "free" phase, so that trying to untangle specific persons would get tricky once the song gets going. They may all become johnny feelgoods at some point. Mike Dan wrote: Did anyone else pick up on this connection? The first line of "Fantazize" is "He's a friend of mine", and in "Friend of Mine" she sings "It's been so long since you've been a friend of mine". "Fantasize" was most likely about her husband because of when it was written/ released, and "Friend of Mine" is clearly a break up song. Pretty interesting huh? I think "Friend of Mine" is a blatant response to "Fantasize". Didn't Liz say that people weren't really "listening" to her record? Subject: ionian mode no one answered the ionian mode question, so i'll take a crack at it... ionian mode is a type of musical scale. the greeks made up a bunch of modes, or scales, made up of different combinations of whole steps and half steps. other modes include dorian, phrigian, myxolydian, lydian, aeolian, and locrian. they're all based on the ionian mode. (i took a music theory class about ten years ago and this is what i remember from that; the book is buried under a bunch of crap in my garage....) i forgot which half-step combos go with which mode. anyway, the ionian mode is the closest to the major scale that is most often used in "modern" music (i.e., the music of today, modern times). the greeks came up with this system and they were *insanely* obsessed with finding perfect mathematically based "solutions" to *everything*. they had formulas for perfect architecture, anatomy, poetry, and so on. those crazy greeks.... anyway, who posted about using music to kill cancer cells? is this published? i'm asking because i copyedit medical journals (among other types of academic stuff) for a living, so this is *totally* interesting to me. any more info on this?? plus, i've read quite a bit about some ancient civilizations who used sound as a technology for other things such as moving large objects, so, hmmm. i know they're finally using sound in some medical procedures. anyway.... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2003 12:37:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Emil Breton Subject: elitist asswipes <> Hey! Yeah, sure, the melody is kind of subtle or ho-hum (as most Phair melodies are -- oh, time for another debate!) and its structure is resolutely unconventional, but isn't that a refreshing change of pace from the songs Liz has written the past 5+ years? It is for me! I can't imagine anyone not finding the lyrics interesting -- they're so funny. They work in that whole "the story is in the details" sort of way. Like, by the time she gets to the part where his brother is shouting with his mouth full about Lenin and whatnot and a glob of food hits Jeremy right in the eye, you know exactly what's going on in Character Liz's mind as she says -- or thinks to herself -- "Oh, dear! Here, Jeremy, let me get that for you." This is short-storytelling at its hilarious best. A+. As you were, Emil __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! It would be risky but I totally think releasing Love/Hate as the single and following it up with Firewalker would have been a better choice.
