Greetings, This is the latest email from EMI about Liz: LIZ PHAIR NEW SINGLE 'WHY CAN'T I?' OUT AUGUST 03 NEW SELF TITLED ALBUM OUT 07.07.03 includes the hit single 'Why Can't I?' The fair maiden of music returns with her hot new single and adventurous new self titled album... Her name alone as the albums title suggests Phair at her most naked and direct. And her powerful brand of first-person narratives -- variously naughty, wistful, pointed, sexual, and humorous, often at the same time are very much in evidence. Musically, Liz Phair is her most confident and varied effort to date: theres a virtual smorgasbord of indelible hooks but theyre couched in everything from turned-to-eleven crunch chords to swirling psychedelic to garage stomp to ephemeral synths to bare naked acoustics. Have a listen to some of the new tracks on the album - CLICK HERE FOR THE SAMPLER Check out Liz's new website with all nine of her music videos, browse through her discography and more! http://www.lizphair.com Download your FREE buddy icons here Why is the single being released a month after the album??? I hope it actually gets released, not like the Beth Orton singles which for some odd reason never actually appear. And as it for it being played on Rage at 6 in the morning when the new releases usually get played on Friday NIGHT, I s'pose that's indicative of trying to get the kids' attention right? Has anyone heard it being played on radio here? "I only thought of picking up the new album today when I was parking at a mall and heard Avril Levigne on the radio. It's a sad day when I need that sort of prompting. It was discounted for first day of release at HMV so I picked it up. As I was walking past the "V" selection, I couldn't help noticing a similarity in Liz's look to that of Holly Valance, a local pop princess." That really saddens me, Liz being made into a Holly Valance, bloody hell. Still haven't bought it yet, am planning to buy it from Readings tomorrow, that if they're actually stocking it which they should be right? Also, I don't know who was talking about the new Fleetwood Mac album (apologies) but I think it's quite good but it really should have been cut down and as for those Buckingham attempts at psychedelica...let's just say that Stevie's songs are the stronger ones. Yes the Bangles album is quite good too but once again think it could have been cut down - apparently they're going to be touring Australia at the end of the year!!! Also for the Aussies - has anyone heard anything about who's playing Livid or the Big Day Out? Are they actually going ahead with the Big Day Out cause I read somewhere that Metallica are going to be headlining - ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also does anyone know the details of this Everett True interview and/or the fight with the Smashing Pumpkins? I read True's book and it was quite interesting but did involve a lot of True bragging about his experiences. What exactly does he have against Liz - anyone know? I almost shit yesturday when I got a call from xrt. Unfortunately it was to be on the listeners panel, don't think I didn't try to parlay that into getting into the Liz show. It didn't work!!! So if there's any winners out there with an extra ticket I would be more than willing to take it off your hands. Do you think one of you guys will be able to record it? Have a good one! Liz Phair Releases Free Internet-Only EP But pop-up window demands $34.95 before letting you hear "Hot White Cum" Will Bryant reports: I'm not a masochist, I swear to God I'm not (although, thanks to Google, cross-reffin' my name and "masochist" will now hook you up with this very page). But the 'Fork was recently tipped to the fact that Liz Phair has released Comeandgetit, an Internet-only EP which includes five previously unreleased efforts deemed just too goddamned interesting to be included on the embarassment that is Liz Phair. Our tipster excitedly hyped the EP as being "all the good songs left off the album," which is stretching it a little. However, the tracks are a great improvement over the shrill clusterfuck of overproduced power ballads and commercial pap on Pitchfork perfect-zero Liz Phair. Comeandgetit includes studio versions of Phair setlist staple "Bouncers' Conversation" and a new recording of the Cindy Crawford-infatuated "Hurricane Cindy" (timely!). Goofy synthstrings, programmed beats and unexpected washes of dream-sequence harp lend a winningly playful edge to cuts like "Conversation" and the endearingly weird "Jeremy Engle." Tracklist: 01 Jeremy Engle 02 Bouncers' Conversation 03 Fine Again 04 Hurricane Cindy 05 Shallow Opportunities The catch is: you have to use an official copy of Liz Phair to access the booty-- and that's if you can even get it to work. Several subscribers to Phair fanlist Support System recently complained that their discs have failed to "authenticate" the connection on certain machines (and the scheme won't work at all on a Mac). Those tech-savvy enough to navigate Capitol's digital barricades were faced with the dilemma of decoding a 13-minute ASF file and digitally separating the songs in a WAV editor and... am I boring you yet? Long story short, no matter how much lucre the industry blows on copy-protection schemes, any jackhole with a 1/4" stereo phono cable knows you can route a PC's headphone jack back into the sound card and rip the files to MP3. Bafflingly, Capitol's "secret" Comeandgetit site allows users to download cover art for the EP, but the music file itself cannot be burned to CD (!!). Come on, guys, the genie is waaaay out of the bottle on MP3 (in fact, she's over at Major Nelson's pad burning a mash-up mix CD for Major Healey as we speak). And the point is moot because like two days after the album was released, these "exclusive" cuts were all over the evil file-sharing services. What, do you think we did all that shit with the WAV editor and the phono plugs? Are you high? And if you are a Mac user, you may have noticed that yet another Phair outtake, "Insanity", is available as an "exclusive" download from the iTunes Music Store. In fact, it was the third-most downloaded track on the service last week, so if you've got a buck and a Mac with OS X and all the trimmings, comeandgetit. Phair recently announced a summer tour with a full band, rolling down the left coast late next month before storming Texas, the northeast, and the midwest in somewhat haphazard fashion. I gotta admit, I don't think Jeremy Engle is all that great. The tune is lackluster, and the story doesn't interest me, nor do the lyrics make me feel anything. Same with Bouncer. :ducks for cover: Besides HC, which I've already blathered about, I think "Shallow Opportunities" is the strongest EP track (if you don't count "Insanity"... and if you do, I think it trumps all of them), except the repeated refrain about playing the game makes me think about one of those Madonna singles a few years back... anyway have the slightest idea what I'm talking about? Something about her vocal there reminds me of that Madonna song. But it sort of makes sense that it's the demo that I like best... I think all four of the others suffer, yet again, from over-production. I think maybe I would like some of these better in their nascent forms... darn, I need a copy of WSCEsessions. I live in central New Jersey, where we have this terrible radio station WPST (97.5 for those in the area.) And this morning they were giving away tickets to the Jason Mraz concert at the Electric Factory in Philly on August 12. Yes, the Jason Mraz concert. To me, this is notable for two reasons: 1. Jason Mraz must be the headliner for them to give away tickets such as they did. 2. There was absolutely no mention of Liz. This is a very mainstream station in a fairly large market (New Jersey is the most densely populated state, after all, and close to Philly and NYC), so it seems that perhaps her album isn't going to make it big 'round these parts. To get a feel for the station, take a gander at its latest "Top Nine at 9," their nightly countdown of the 9 most requested songs. Liz is better off without them! 1 - Clay Aiken: This Is The Night 2 - Lil Kim/50 Cent: Magic Stick 3 - Kelly Clarkson: Miss Independent 4 - 50 Cent: 21 Questions 5 - Good Charlotte: Girls And Boys 6 - Justin Guarini: Sorry 7 - Michelle Branch: Are You Happy Now 8 - Black Eyed Peas: Where Is The Love 9 - Beyonce/Jay-Z: Crazy In Love ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #180 ************************************
