Liz_Phair_Live says: Yes! Absolutely! I smoked a while when I was younger and it took a bit of a time to get over the cravings, but once they're gone, they're gone and I think you should stick around here on planet Earth. Fredia1 in Onstage1 asks: What song of yours are you most proud of? Liz_Phair_Live says: I could never ever make that choice. There are so many I like for different reasons. I like the songs that surprise me, they don't have to be popular. It's a whole body thing where your ears are working and your mind is going, and it comes out so fast, that I can sit back and be a listener. So I like songs like "Dogs of L.A." and "Jeremy Engle" and "Headache" all freaked me out. nue99 in Onstage1 asks: Do you still feel the same way about raising your son as you did when you wrote Whip-Smart? How would you change the song if you wrote it to your son now? Liz_Phair_Live says: Interesting, because I wrote the song before I had a son, so it was just conjecture. I would say as a mother you spend more time parting practicalities. That song is about shoring him up against the evils of the world and I think being a mom it's just gentler. They come into the world with their own agenda and you work around that. You don't get to reinvent parenting (laughs) and you're going to love it! It's like the looking glass I can't describe it to you. My best friend had a baby and I remember standing in the cold Chicago air wondering how it could be worth it, but it is. FrontlineAnt in Onstage2 asks: dragonfire_817 says: Simply: I have a library of "phair" songs that bookmark a phase in my life - do you ever wonder how your music/lyrics affect other people and what meaning they may take on in their realm? Liz_Phair_Live says: I have to honestly say I don't spend a lot of time thinking about my music's role in other's lives just for the simple purpose, I have to feel like my music is unselfconscious and if I sit around thinking about my role, it keeps me from being creative and free. When people come up to me and tell me my music has shared a part of their lives, in a good way, I enjoy that. I needed them to get through this album and it's the very best thing about what I do, that I have that place in people's lives. DishDiva says: Sparky in Onstage4 asks : Is there any artist that inspired you in your musical career? Liz_Phair_Live says: Countless. I definately, my parents when I was young. Also Simon and Garfunkle, The Kinks (my babysitter left it one night and my brother absconded with it) (laughs), Dylan, I just remember going to sleep every night listening to music. I can't pick just a few because I take in all music where ever I go. slondo11 in Onstage4 asks: Hey Liz...when your child grows up and listens to your records, are you apprehensive about how he'll react? Liz_Phair_Live says: It's funny because I had a good friend ask me that. We've been friends over this last year. She's thinking about kids and she wanted to know what it would do to him. It's something to think about, but for me, what's going to midigate his feelings, where he's uncomfortable with something I said, but when he's a teenager, he'll find something to be uncomfortable with. He sees what I do on a day to day basis and he knows I'm normal and he's got a traditional unbringing. Maybe that'll be his thing, but maybe it won't. Maybe he'll just be upset by the way I drive. (laughs) It hurts my parents also, they don't like their daughter construed a different way than she is and not know me. I do have a large network of friends that support me and I think he'll be in that fold. - -_SunshineMomma_- in Onstage4 asks: When you grew up did you dream of being a music artist or something else? If something else, what? Liz_Phair_Live says: I actually dreamed of being a visual artist. I grew up drawing all the time, like unstoppable. All overy my brother's papers and father's work. I still secretly hope that I can do that later in my life. I think more like an artist than a musician and you get to express yourself. I studied art and worked with great artists like Nancy Spero and Leon Bsolub and Ed Pasmphae. Liz_Phair_Live says: Ed Paschke. A-akiera in Onstage1 asks: Besides singing what other hidden talent you have? Liz_Phair_Live says: (laughs) I like to think that I can dance. (LAUGHS!!!) Now this has not been really tested other than the privacy of my home and/or special nights out. When I was growing up I had friends, we were like the Four Musketeers, and we had disco contests and I always lost! (laughs) DishDiva says: Disco hunh? Liz_Phair_Live says: Yeah. DishDiva says: Liz, this has been such a pleasue having you here to talk about your new self-titled album. Liz_Phair_Live says: Thank you for all your interest and all the great vibes and I can't wait to come around on tour and I'll actually be in the same space with everybody. That sounds so hippy like. I am in this same boat myself, and for me at least, it is out of a desire to hear what other die-hard Liz phans are saying about the new album. I find myself very conflicted about it. I had heard a few of the songs in March when I saw Liz play at the Starbucks at SXSW (with Josh Ritter and Vic Chestnutt--it was a truly awesome show), and I LOVED them. I thought they were so her--sassy and tongue in cheek and just what I wanted. Then I started hearing the singles on the radio, and I have to agree with Paige; I really like them. They are catchy and fun, and the lyrics are a 300% improvement from the usual drivel you hear from pop musicians today. And then I bought the album. And I am disappointed. With what exactly, I don't know if I can explain-- mostly with what Michael Penn brings to her. Which pains me to say because I like his work and I really enjoy Aimee Mann as well. And I think the NYT review and Greg Kot are right--her lyrics on some songs are awful. I don't know. Like Catherine said, I am sure this subject is beaten into the ground, but I wanted to vent to people who are still giving her the benefit of the doubt rather than those who are just brushing her off as a "wanna-be diva". Also, Greg Kot mentions in his review "outtakes from the album session that have surfaced on the Internet which suggest that the singer had the makings of another intensely personal album, but chose to abandon these more intimate recordings for a more bombastic approach." and I figured that if anyone were to know the whereabouts of these songs it would be people on this list. Also, does anyone have a copy of a recent Liz Phair interview from Billboard? I met the guy who wrote it at a wedding I was at a couple weeks ago, and I am interested in reading it (he, too, hates the album--I argued with him about it for 30 minutes or so before finally admitting that I hadn't even heard the whole album yet). I guess that is it. I am excited to be back here, and look forward to hearing what everyone else has to say. Thanks! Oh! One other thing! Has anyone heard the new Evan Dando album "Baby I'm Bored"? Very random thoughts whilst listening to the new album: - -- Remember how exile was a song-by-song response to the Stones? I'm listening to "Rock Me" and trying to figure out why it's so mediocre. Imagine if Liz gave herself the project of taking EIG and going song-by-song, creating a "radio-friendly" version of each track? Well, "Rock Me" would be her trivialized version of "Flower". Ya dig? For "so uncomplicated, so in tune," read "You're prob'ly shy and introspective/that's not part of my objective." They're kind of the same song, except that one blows your mind and the other one makes you blow chunks. (Okay, sorry... I exaggerated there, but I couldn't resist the punnery.) - -- "Extraordinary" is pretty good. The lyrics are boring, but the hooks are nice. I wouldn't mind hearing this one on the radio. - -- "Little Digger" I liken to "Go On Ahead"... both songs I can't really get into because while they're both intensely personal, they're just too literal and unsubtle for me to groove on. They read to me more like a journal entry than a work of art. I *should* find them poignant and touching, but I don't. All of a sudden I got a flash in my head of "She's Leaving Home" by the Beatles... also a very literal narrative, and yet it succeeds in making me feel sad whereas the two Phair songs I've mentioned don't evoke anything in me. Am I making any sense? I guess I brought "Little Digger" up because a lot of people were citing it as the best track on the album, and I just don't see it. - -- Someone said this already, but it bears repeating: I'm fearful that this Top40-comeback is going to fail, not because of the disgust of her loyal fans, but because the timing's all wrong. She's kind of pushing an image of being a sexy Liz Phair without the irritation of depth or complication, but frankly, I think Avril Levine has already cornered the market on that. Unfortunately, a slicked-up Liz Phair has already been done to death. I feel bad, because unlike some other fans, I would LOVE hearing Liz songs on the lips of my teenybopper cousins... but I have the sinking feeling that, yet again, it ain't gonna happen. Too bad. I hope I'm wrong. - --Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 15:00:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Emil Breton Subject: more from Billboard.com Okay, this is from Billboard.com 6/26: <> I checked the Agora (Cleveland) website, and it looks like Phair and Mraz are CO-HEADLINING there. I sure am jealous of you Chicagoans. Also, found this blurb, again from Billboard.com, and found the second-to-last sentence intriguing -- kind of suggests at least the possibility of a 'return to form', which would only make sense. I'm going to go waaaay out on a limb and bet that this record won't be a blockbuster and Liz will go back to being a "prestige artist" (or, to put it in more cynical terms, "come crawling back"), especially if word reaches her that the EP is being greeted with thunderous applause (which it is, right?). <<"This album represents me trying to get the voice of an authentic woman where young girls will hear it," Phair tells Billboard. "I feel very frustrated with music and women and their role. I hope to God I can take my name at the end of this and make my own little recordings, but nobody made me do anything. Parts of "Go On Ahead" are intense ("it's hard to admit it / but you hold me and I can't feel you"), but then there's the rest ("You go on ahead, honey ... you make me feel funny"), which is either too literal or too -- I don't know -- ordinary, considering the songwriter. "Little Digger" actually is in my Top 3 from the new record (if I use my imagination -- ha, ha), but the "trucks on the bed" thing is *weak*. Arf. Liz has been moving from oblique, almost personal-mythology-type details and metaphors into more literal, go-for-the-jugular storytelling (starting with wcse), but I really think she struck gold w/ "Jeremy Engle". I'd love to dissect that one - -- it's so un-pop, un-lyrical, very short-story-esque (she's just *rambling* -- in a good way), yet rife with thick, meaningful imagery. I'd say it's her weirdest, densest, and funniest song since -- uh, Whip-smart? "Don't Have Time"? Honestly, I'm crazy about it, and I'm glad to hear she is, too. So, that is actually you playing your Musicmaster/Duo-Sonic on the new EP, correct? Liz_Phair_Live says: Yes. One of the hardest things living with larger productions on songs, people as long as I can remember have tried to take me off the music because I don't play guitar very well. What I want to do on the website is put songs I have written on the road, things I've done live. I like to reassert myself, so that will just be my little voice and my guitar. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 17:21:30 -0700 (PDT) From: robert joyner Subject: LP album sales chart position according to hitsdailydouble.com Liz's album came in at #23 with sales for the week of 37,380. These numbers are basically a mirror image of the numbers that wcse did the first week of release. looks to me like the peer to peer stuff hurts the big name releases but has minimal effect on artists like liz. seven non-album songs. a few more tracks and that Liz Phair-er cd will be ready to start burning. later robert ===== - ------------------------------------------------------------ Nashville - A Liz Phair Web Site http://www.geocities.com/robnashville - ------------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? It's fitting, I suppose, that she's got an exclusive track on the iTunes music store called "Insanity". What are the odds this will get ripped and enocded as 192kbs mp3s? It would be nice to have some high quality mp3's of the EP out there. (sorry, Kate) (sorry for sending that to you individually, Kate) I *still* couldn't get it to work... and I followed the instructions. WinMedia Player can seriously bite me... they should have just done it as straight MP3s the way Wilco did. A kiss for Brett Jones, btw!! I was so irritated... my bro's interviewing the director of media programming (or something like that) at Capitol tomorrow... I ordered him to grill the guy about why they had to make the EP download so fochachta. He replied that he'd *ask* him about it... :^) - --Catherine p.s. ugh... that sounded like "my Dad's the president of a big company!" Really, I'm not a snivelling little name-dropper... I swear. [look, i rarely post anything remotely positive, so just let me be in a good mood for once, okay?] o _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Wowowowow... I just DLed "HurricaneCindy" from the :cough:free:cough: FTP site and I'm digesting it. This has been in my top five Liz songs for several years now, and I've enjoyed all its incarnations. Some initial impressions: Pros: She kept the "what's that piece of ass I see" intro that I grew to love in the WCSEsessions version of this song. The production is a *little* too slick for my tastes, but not overly so. It's nice. (In contrast, I did NOT like the strings added to "Perfect World" on WCSE) Cons: She eliminated the "put it on the stereo and play... all my life I've wanted them to say..." bridge which was in both the ShelvedDemos and WCSEsessions versions... I think this is unfortunate. It added a whole 'nother level of interpretation to the song. It expanded the theme to include memory, a longtime childhood dream of being famous, being known, instead of just focusing on the post-pubescent desire for male attention... which is also part of the song's theme, IMO, but not its entirety. All in all, I'm just glad this pet song of mine is finally getting a hearing. Yay! - --Catherine ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #173 ************************************
