I was subscribed to this list several years ago... I guess around when WCSE was released. Though I've been out of the online Phair-fan community loop, I've continued to listen to her back-catalog unabated. Subscription to this list brought me my now well-worn cassette copies of "Shelved Demos '96" and Jase's "Phairities". (Not to mention the Girlysound Demos) I've since re-compiled those collections with MP3s (quite a project considering my poky internet connection), and discovered a handful of unreleased tracks with which I am sure you are all quite familiar ("Bars of the Bed", "Don't Apologize", etc.) Such endeavors only reinforce my conviction that, for the most part, the best Liz material is that which gets shelved. Which brings me to the new album, and forgive me if I'm canvassing already well-trodden ground here. (I'm guessing many of you had your hot little hands on this music long before the official release date... but I only got my copy a few days ago.) Anyway, despite all the hoopla about her Grand Sellout, I find the album to be about as likeable as WCSE, in a similar way. Half of the songs are clunkers with unbelievably trite lyrics, the other half have typically inventive Phair hooks and lyrics. So far I've played the second half of the album about eight times, the first half considerably less. My $.02 on a couple of highlights: H.W.C.-- It bugs me that this is one of my favorite songs on the album, because it's the obvious choice for people who only like Liz because she "talks dirty" and have no clue about her brilliant pop sensibilities. But this song showcases the latter in abundance... I love the sweet, pure happiness of it paired with the jaunty percussion. And I love the sly way she twists dopey mainstream female culture: "You're the best magazine advice..." A great summer song... I was singing it all day yesterday at my job... which is funny because I work in a historic village and I was wearing an early 19th century costume... :) I sang it quietly. My Bionic Eyes-- Is it just me, or is this a perfect song for go-go dancing? I love it... it reminds me of some Monkees songs... like "Valerie", maybe... I like how it builds up, with several layers of hooks, to that climactic, driving chorus. "But I can fake it forever..." Heh... kind of like the album, eh? Well, that's all for now... I hope to stick around here for a little while, at least. - --Catherine (used to be "molanphy@spacelab.net") ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 09:02:32 EDT From: TitleTK@aol.com Subject: NY Times Letter n a message dated 6/30/03 3:23:24 AM Eastern Daylight Time, will@pitchforkmedia.com writes: << Popular music today is, indeed, rather soulless (ironic, considering most of it is labeled R&B, funk and soul), but let's not go blaming "L.A." >> You are right. I am anti-LA, but I think that is more from Liz's own comments about the city and her very anti-Chicago stance (along with my own experiences there). After all, Kim Deal lives there and she is about as soulful as they come. But at the same time it is not a place where "art" is truly nurtured, in any arena. I think the people who can live there with their "soul" in tact are those that have already suffered or at least know the music business somewhat. Also, it seems that all of the artists you've listed, have a very smooth, hi-fi sound to them. Not saying that as a positive or negative, but you still see very little lo-fi music coming from the west. james ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 08:23:01 -0500 From: "INMAN, DAVID B" Subject: RE: what other albums are good? check out Rooney & the new Fountians of Wayne - -----Original Message----- From: Ray [mailto:sluggers@sdf.lonestar.org] Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2003 5:18 PM To: melany Cc: support-system@smoe.org Subject: Re: what other albums are good? The new Bangles album "Doll Revolution" is incredible too. Brad Wood produced it as well - so if you like that sound, check it out. it's just a fun album. the new Blur is very good - but very different than their other stuff. i think it's pretty non-accessable - lots of songs in the key of "Death of a party" etc... slow, mellow, sad, even morbid at times - but it's an intesting listen. the Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Fever to Tell" album is fantastic - i agree with jase. Kristin Hersh's "The Grotto" is probably my favorite album of the year. the new Lucinda Williams "World WIthout Tears" is like, my whiskey-drankin' anthem-album of the year!!! The new Owl and the Pussycat is good too....as is the new GOSSIP "Movement" - who I'm going to see next week! i can't wait!! has anyone heard the new album by the Thorns? it's Matthew Sweet with Shawn Mullins etc?? it's good....but i don't know...i was expecting more. but i'm still in the early stages of listening. at any rate, dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 11:30:23 -0400 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: liz in DETROIT!! i was talking to clear channel this morning, and it looks like Liz Phair will be playing Saint Andrews Hall in DETROIT!!!! the date will be announced tomorrow (tuesday). The Mars Volta's "De-Loused In The Comatorium" is a record that i haven't quite fully grasped, but it's pretty damn amazing ~ it's an interesting cross between punk (or emo?) and progressive rock, to my ears. although i've only heard a song or two, Wire's latest album (title?) sounds great, if you like harsh and abrasive music. from the last couple of years, i'd recommend Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," the Shins' "Oh, Inverted World" and...well, i don't have many new albums from the last couple of years because i can't afford 'em anymore. 3)re: James / <<>> my thoughts on this subject are: with all the piling on of this record, i think Liz should have given it right back to them. it's Liz's baby ~ she's a mother ~ of course she's going to defend this album. how many artists that are generally well-regarded have had so much shit flung their way? did anyone jump all over Michael Jackson because "Dangerous" (IMO) or "Invincible" were poor albums? no, they just chose to ignore them (it). the only historical incidence i remember was when the Beatles released the "Magical Mystery Tour" movie ~ it's like critics had been waiting 4 years to jump on a Beatles misfire. given my recent addiction to "Sound Opinions," it's my estimation that a lot of critics (not all of them) are full of hot air ~ they just happen to have access to everything that comes out. chris deLisle ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 13:32:22 -0700 (PDT) From: robert joyner Subject: liz chat on msn don't forget, Liz will do a live chat on msn tonite at 7 pm Eastern 4pm pacific. enter chat through front page of lizphair.com or use this address http://chat.msn.com/msnlive_feature.msnw?id=artist/lizphair ===== - ------------------------------------------------------------ Nashville - A Liz Phair Web Site http://www.geocities.com/robnashville - ------------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I rarely write in, but I've been reading your posts for around five years at this point. I've learned a great deal about music and stumbled upon countless amazing artists through the banter that goes on on this mailing list. Thanks to all of you for being fans of music... and liking so much good stuff... I've recently moved to Hollywood and am putting together a band. I moved here from Montreal where I lived for six years, and I came with my best buddy Dave. I'm 25 and he's 23. We're looking to form a band with two females who can sing/dance/play instruments and be sexy and shocking and fun and most importantly entertaining up on stage with us. I would describe our music as "The Beatles go to Naughty School" with a million different influences thrown in. The basis of a lot of it, though, is shocking lyrics set to candy sweet melodies. Most of the music is improvized but some is written more traditionally. I encourage any of you to go check out a song or too at mp3.com/ginx where you will find about fifty of our songs. The first couple are the most recent work we've done - starting to work with drum machines and what not. Anyway, because you're all so brilliant, I thought it's be a great forum to get some ideas and feedback. If you are feeling adventurous and want to hear some stuff that might really catch you off guard and interest you, go check it out. Also, if any of your are local an interested in musical collaboration and are curious to find out more, I'd be totally down with meeting some Liz fans. I'd bet if I had a way to get in touch with her somehow, Liz might even wanna write a song with Ginx. Any ideas on how I might get a message to Ms. PHair? Thanks again to all of you for your time. Cheers, Jason P.S. While LP is not Guyville... I just gotta say I love Liz... the album just rocks... we'll see how long I enjoy it, but whatever... there are so many artists out there to pique my interests... I think if she put out Guyville 2 maybe that wouldn't make me or any of you happy either... maybe she will make that great album some day... maybe like Weezer must... whatever... cheers, everyone. One of the hardest things living with larger productions on songs, people as long as I can remember have tried to take me off the music because I don't play guitar very well. It's something to think about, but for me, what's going to midigate his feelings, where he's uncomfortable with something I said, but when he's a teenager, he'll find something to be uncomfortable with. He sees what I do on a day to day basis and he knows I'm normal and he's got a traditional unbringing. Maybe that'll be his thing, but maybe it won't. Maybe he'll just be upset by the way I drive. (laughs) It hurts my parents also, they don't like their daughter construed a different way than she is and not know me. I do have a large network of friends that support me and I think he'll be in that fold. - -_SunshineMomma_- in Onstage4 asks: When you grew up did you dream of being a music artist or something else? If something else, what? Liz_Phair_Live says: I actually dreamed of being a visual artist. I grew up drawing all the time, like unstoppable. All overy my brother's papers and father's work. I still secretly hope that I can do that later in my life. I think more like an artist than a musician and you get to express yourself. I studied art and worked with great artists like Nancy Spero and Leon Bsolub and Ed Pasmphae. Liz_Phair_Live says: Ed Paschke. A-akiera in Onstage1 asks: Besides singing what other hidden talent you have? Liz_Phair_Live says: (laughs) I like to think that I can dance. (LAUGHS!!!) Now this has not been really tested other than the privacy of my home and/or special nights out. When I was growing up I had friends, we were like the Four Musketeers, and we had disco contests and I always lost! (laughs) DishDiva says: Disco hunh? Liz_Phair_Live says: Yeah. DishDiva says: Liz, this has been such a pleasue having you here to talk about your new self-titled album. Liz_Phair_Live says: Thank you for all your interest and all the great vibes and I can't wait to come around on tour and I'll actually be in the same space with everybody. That sounds so hippy like. (laughs) I did not mean it so hippy. Liz_Phair_Live says: I really enjoyed talking about things I like to talk about. ===== - ------------------------------------------------------------ Nashville - A Liz Phair Web Site http://www.geocities.com/robnashville - ------------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I probably woulda bought it eventually, but that day I really wanted to see it. Since then I've caught at least glimpses three times. paige- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 22:48:51 -0400 From: Catherine Molanphy Subject: msn chat part 2/Simon&Garfunkel > DishDiva says: Sparky in Onstage4 asks : Is there any > artist that inspired you in your musical career? > Liz_Phair_Live says: Countless. I definately, my > parents when I was young. Also Simon and Garfunkle, I knew it! In "Can't Get Out of What I'm Into", the part where she goes, "Oh-oh, Lo-ward! Why... have you... forsa... ken me..." is a direct lift from the obscure song "Blessed" off of the "Sounds of Silence" album. I feel vindicated. :^) - --Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 23:37:26 -0400 From: Catherine Molanphy Subject: tourdate in NewJersey? Somebody just posted about a show somewhere in New Jersey... I'm sorry, I've forgotten who you are. Did you ever find out any more about the validity of that? Where exactly in NJ are you? I live in Staten Island, and would definitely be up for going to that. I've been thirsting to see Liz in a small setting. - --Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 22:57:18 -0500 From: "Orange Nish" Subject: Re: msn chat part 1 & sorry Rob >Animal_Girl_75 in Onstage1 asks: Hi Liz, I've been a >huge fan since Exile. ... Did anyone from the list participate? And damnit Rob, but I accidently sent you this message privately. Where in NJ is Liz playing. I would be thrilled if she does. Andrea ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 00:14:34 EDT From: C79helium@aol.com Subject: Re: tourdate in NewJersey? Liz is doing an instore at Vintage Vinyl on the 9th of August at 2pm. I hope its not just a signing but also a performance from her as well. Vintage Vinyl is in Fords (Woodbridge), NJ. I am going to be there & very excited that this record store was able to get her :) I try doing some research to see if she will play somewhere in NJ that night cause she doesn't have anything listed yet for that day except for that instore. I was thinking maybe she might play at the Stone Pony or Birch Hill or a possible chance of a set at Maxwell's (which I doubt). -cana- "That I'm a little despot, short and stout, Here is my handgun, here is my crowd control, When you tick me off then the bullets fly out." LOLOL... I was cringing at the same thing, OrangeNish. I guess when you're so prolific, you forget old songs. But her mistake was funny, in a douche-chill kind of way... - --Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jul 2003 01:05:38 -0400 From: Catherine Molanphy Subject: Re: tourdate in NewJersey? > Liz is doing an instore at Vintage Vinyl on the 9th of August at 2pm. Cana, would you be able to give directions to this place? Even though I'm close by, I rarely drive to NJ. Which exit off the NJ Turnpike, etc.? - --Catherine ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #172 ************************************
