I love living in L.A! > >she played why can't i and sounded, i thought, better. she also looked better, >or maybe it wasn't as close-up as the tonight show. > It sounded very good from where we were (10 feet away right in front of Liz in a converted parking lot in back of the El Capitan theater). She looked _great_ actually. In fact, Ann Marie and I discussed that on the way home. I lived in Wicker Park during the height of its guyville era, and Ann Marie and I saw her around on occasion (and at local gigs, too), and though pretty, she always had that Wicker Park denizen look (hey, we had it too when we lived there, so no judgement here, just facts). So when we saw her tonight all pink and groomed and almost glowing, it was like...."woah!" The makeup contributed, I'm sure, but that's a necessity of tv. We speculated that she's not living the WP lifestyle any more. You know...smoking cigs and js constantly, eating badly, partying at Marie's Riptide till 6 am, sleep deprivation, etc. And prolly now doing the Socal thing; excercize, cali cuisine, wheat grass, personal trainer, yoga, whatever...It's easier to take care of yerself out here. Anyhow, whatever the reason, she had great energy for the show, and was very outgoing with the crowd. In fact, the warm-up comic had to shut her up from some of her banter at one point in order to announce countdowns, etc. > >she seemed to lose her timing in the first chorus of "why can't i," but that >could have just been me. > Didn't notice that. Could be. But I'm not one to worry about glitches in live performances. > >as they went to commercial, i saw once that liz was doing a pyramid with -- >who? the band members? -- and she was on top. > It was the band under her, her on top, for the interstitial. It took them a good 5 minutes to get it together, during Jimmy's interview with the Irish guy. Liz at one point mugged a bit and pointed at the band trying to form the first 2 pyramid layers and said "This is gonna happen!" It was a cute moment. Then she climbe atop them and threw her arms up just in the nick of time for the break. What a sport. I wonder if her agent or manager or whatever negotiated something extra for that little stunt. > i thought it MIGHT be liz, but i >wasn't sure till i saw her later in the same outfit. was she telling everyone >to cheer? inquiring minds want to know. > Naw, Liz was not telling anyone to cheer. But she sure seemed to love the adoration. There was a lame-ass warm-up comic who was prodding the audience to cheer and, as he put it, "go fucking' nuts!" when we went to camera. If you've ever been to a taping, you'll know that his is standard operating procedure. It's hard to keep the energy level up with so much down time between takes. Our crowd for this Liz thing was standing outside in the horrid L.A. conditions (a mild 70-degree evening with a slight breeze...) for about 2 hours before liz played, so things get a little sluggish. Once the band came out, though, the crowd definitely perked up. She signed a lot of autographs before she went on, which was a kind gesture. And some guy asked for her pick before she went on, and after she'd finished playing she actually climbed down off the stage to hand it to him. > >she named a few cities in answer to jimmy kimmel's question about the tour, >and she said "we'll be rolling all year." > >then she played supernova and the fucking show ended in the middle of it. WAH! > LOL!! HAHAHA! Home-viewing, non-L.A. resident SUCKERS! Kidding... Seriously, I had no idea! She finished Supernova live, of course. She then went on to play Extraordinary and Divorce Song (unexpurgated, as no tape was rolling). The backup singer was embrassed at the end of Extraordinary because she didn't really know the song and messed it up a bit. She left the stage for Divorce Song. Notwithstanding the glitches it was a great set. Divorce song really rocked, which at first seems a bit odd, but following Extraordinary it made sense, and it actually sounded great. Very electric guitar, and played at a brisk pace. Breakneck, even. > >i have to say, it did sound good. though my heart did not start pounding (as >it does when i see liz perform) until she started supernova. that's my liz. > > She seemed nervous at first, and defintely before they played, but once she got into it, she got the groove and it was all good. Seemed like she had a great time. I know I did! It's kind of harsh, not very well written and doesn't say anything new, but here it is anyway: LIZ PHAIR Liz Phair (Capitol) The eponymous title is our first clue. Ten years after her landmark, lo-fi debut Exile In Guyville, indie diva Liz Phair has re-invented herself as mainstream pop princess. Imagine Avril Lavigne, armed with better pipes and a parental advisory. The Avril comparison isn't as far-fetched as it sounds, given the involvement of the Matrix, the sought-after production trio that crafted Lavigne's debut. Not only has Phair copped Avril's sound, she's prowling the same playground. "I want to play Xbox on your floor," is a come-on to a younger lover on "Rock Me." Phair, now 36 and a single mom, is as salty and lascivious as ever, but the provocation now sounds as forced and transparent as her musical transformation. Sales are now Phair's only possible vindication. Good luck to her. I agree -- she looked a lot more comfortable and sounded better than on the Tonight Show appearance. She also had a huge smile on her face throughout most of the performance and you could tell she felt a lot more at ease. I think Jimmy Kimmel's introduction helped -- he said that he was a huge fan of hers and declared that _Exile in Guyville_ is a classic. Is it just me, or did anyone have a flashback to _Whip-Smart_-era Liz while watching her perform? I don't know if it's just her hair or her overall demeanor, but I was reminded both of the "Supernova" video and her performances of that song and "Cinco De Mayo" on 120 Minutes just after that album came out. Overall, a definite thumbs-up. I'm really looking forward to her tour. I agree with the timing issue on the first chorus of "why can't I". She sounded pretty good although that's not my favorite track on the disc. She also looked very good-my wife almost didn't recognize her. Maybe it was the hair although she thought it was because she didn't see her mouth at first. When I saw the concert setup I was worried she played a song at the beginning of the show and I'd missed it. Did she definitely not play until the end? Scott For those of you who missed Leno, in my area (and maybe yours) they repeat the shows one week later early in the morning. Around 2 AM here. Also, I think the backup singer really shaped up -- no longer did I notice the extreme cacophony between Liz, the backup singer, and the band during the "high enough" part of WCI that had previously been cringe-worthy. I, too, think that Kimmel's introduction, and the audience's energy helped her along. After seeing her on Leno, I honestly was thinking about not going to any of her summer shows, if her performance on Leno was anything to judge them by. But she really shaped up in two days, and put on a rocking performance. And yes, I'm still a little giddy because she played "Supernova," even though it got cut off at the end of the show. I hope that she'll continue to perform on the late night circuit, because I think she's warmed up now, and is ready to put on more great shows. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 11:03:10 -0700 (PDT) From: "trent \[Grr, Arg\]" Subject: Question about upcoming Liz tour ... who's opening for who?? i just got a ticket for the Cleveland show: Jason Mraz Agora Theatre, Cleveland, OH Wednesday August 06, 2003 8:00 pm Seat location: section GENADM ===== - --- remember, always be yourself. unless you suck. -- joss whedon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 12:35:15 -0700 (PDT) From: robert joyner Subject: Re: Question about upcoming Liz tour ... trent, saw this on the cleveland plain dealer site. looks like liz is the one opening up for this hoser Mraz "Can she pull off the transformation? Still don't like the song very much but it is much more palatable with the arrangement she has set up for the live band. Can someone with the cd liner notes tell me who did the drums on "Love/Hate Transmission"? The drums on that track are great, really driving the song along. Love the sound, especially since some of the other tracks on the album are a bit heavy on the use of loops. robert - --- "trent [Grr, Arg]" wrote: > who's opening for who?? i just got a ticket for the > Cleveland show: > > Jason Mraz > Agora Theatre, Cleveland, OH > Wednesday August 06, 2003 8:00 pm > Seat location: section GENADM ===== - ------------------------------------------------------------ Nashville - A Liz Phair Web Site http://www.geocities.com/robnashville - ------------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? That's the shortest drive for me to see her, and I don't want to pay to see *her* open for *him*. You'd think lizphair.com would've made a point of mentioning that she's opening (if that is the case), as they did with Flaming Lips. Anyone have a definite way of finding out? Ken? You still hooked-in? Liz was *tight* on Kimmel last night. I guess it was because she was so loose. Yes, Jason, definitely a Whip-smart flashback. It's the hair: no longer blown-out (as Meredith explained a while back), no ridiculously heavy eyeliner (someone really should take her aside and have a little chat about that), and way less makeup (definitely a good thing). Oh, and she actually played her guitar on Kimmel. Oh, and would someone mind cranking her amp a little bit? Hey Liz, you can PLAY. Quit pretending otherwise! I really was generally psyched by her performance, and just prefer to see her putting her actual talent to use. Brian Falk said the EP is what he's been waiting 5 years for, and I'm right there with him. For anyone still fond of the saying "She'll never make another Exile," please listen to the new EP and try to understand that those 5 songs are just what the doctor ordered -- they're not Exile in Guyville, and they're *exactly* what a lot of us have been clamoring for all along. I think Liz has almost redeemed herself with the EP. I really dig Jeremy Engle who I'm guessing is the same Jeremy from Money. I love Liz's character songs- it's a damn shame these are considered "art pieces" as she says. If she releases more of this stuff later, I might forgive her. Maybe. I think she is opening for Mraz. I preordered St. Louis tickets and my email confirmation only listed him. She better play a long set. I think it's almost insulting, isn't she a much more respected, established artist, not to mention older? Not that I know anything about him. I agree she was better on Kimmel (I thought the Leno performance was the worst music act I've ever seen on a talk show- seriously, I was horrified), but still, that girl can't sing live. Maybe I'm just an anal retentive stickler for pitch. Do any of you guys have problems seeing her live? I'm a little worried about going- do you just grin and bear it? It's kind of funny she's making this big bid for popstardom when she really can't do that whole pop-performance thing. I suppose she should just lip synch like the rest of them do. Yeah, bring on the headset, Liz. Boy am I looking forward to her response in the times tomorrow. I can't quite figure out how she's going to defend herself but I bet it will be mighty interesting. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo!
