(sorry, > robert, if i'm dragging you into this...) I'm the "Ho" Man in question. thanks for the helpful words, Dana. No need to apologize to Andrea, though. Most folks on the list took our comparisons of andy slater- liz phair to a pimp and ho comments for what they were.... a telling analogy of the whole sickening thing going on in the GQ article. See, Andy slater isn't a pimp he's actually the head of a billion dollar record label. Liz isn't selling herself on the corner of hollywood and vine. She's in that big round building ON hollywood and vine, making records. I think if Andrea is only able to take the literal translation of what we said then she missed out on on things like sarcasm, dry humor, etc..... If i had wanted to actually call Liz a ho I would have said something along the lines of " Liz is a total ho bag slut that would bang anything on two feet". But I didn't say that because 1) i don't believe that to be true and 2) that was not the point i was trying to make. My guess is that Andrea has had such a politically correct indoctrination that certain words ring bells and set off alarms in her no matter what context they are used in. Kinda like the term "faggot" in bouncer's conversation which she seems to have problems with in spite of the fact she knows that Liz is far from a homophobe. I hope that no one ever played Patti Smith's "Rock and Roll Nigger" for her. It is a totally awesome song but it might make Andrea pass out in an apoplectic fit. robert No, Andrea is not being politically correct and I loathe the fact that anyone who is annoyed by sexism, misogyny, racism, homophobia is charged with that when they don't find something that is sexist, misogynist, racist or homophobic funny. And prostitution is NOT something to laugh about - ANYONE who knows anything about prostitution knows that. Prostitution is the sexual abuse of people, primarily women and girls, who often were sexually abused as children or teenagers and who quite frequently show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and who are exposed to enormous amounts of violence in addition to the sexual abuse they endure as prostitutes. I've had the privilege of being taught a couple of subjects by a leading anti-prostitution academic activist (Sheila Jeffreys) and believe me prostitution is not something to laugh about at all. The insane amount of women and girls who are forced into prostitution every year from Eastern European countries and Asian countries to ! service (some) rich Western men is incredible - it's estimated that about 40-200 million women and girls are trafficked into prostitution every year. And then you have all the women and girls already in prostitution in Western countries. As long as people still find prostitution acceptable, as long as the demand for it continues and furthermore something to LAUGH AT, the amount of women and girls in prostitution will increase. So please think about the people you're laughing about when you make fun of prostitution...Sally ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 05:57:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig King Subject: Re: support-system-digest V6 #166 >>You think so? BUT - i can see Andrea's point too. i know it's just Liz's character (i mean, she didn't *really* wanna fuck some cows in South Dakota either) but the word itself is jarring to hear, regardless. and for the record - so is patti smith's "rock and roll nigger". i know she's not being a racist. but so help me god - the other day i was listening to Patti in my car, windows down, blaring it - and that song comes on. people all around me, walking by and blaring out of my car at top volume was "nigger! nigger! nigger! nigger! nigger! nigger! It's great! However, the folks at Capitol (or as my friend Adam says, "Crapitol") really screwed the pooch with their damn copy-protection scheme. What's the point in having downloadable artwork for an EP that you can only listen to while sitting at your computer? They should have offered separate MP3 files for each song encoded at a decent bitrate. They also made it impossible to download the higher bit-rate version on a Mac. The link always shows up as "invalid." Don't they test their web sites before going live with them?! Wilco's label, Nonesuch, did their Internet EP the right way. If you own a copy of _Yankee Hotel Foxtrot_ you can download an EPs worth of bonus songs as separate MP3 files-- none of this Windoze Media Player garbage. If you're listening, Capitol, you could learn a thing or two from Nonesuch. A BIG thanks to Brett and Trent for helping get the EP out there. The problem with the performance was the backup gospelish singer and the other members seemed not insync with Liz. Liz actually sounded better than she ever has but her voice sounded off-key in comparison to the woman and the rest of the band. I think having just one of the guys singing backup softly instead of the whole band, it would have made Liz' voice style standout more. Actually, I like Janet Raines as a backup. Her voice complimented Liz' better because it was similar. At times I remember hearing it and for a split second couldn't decipher if it was Liz or Janet. Also, I think that Ellen Degeneres is the coolest. When they all come together at the end, I could read Ellen's lips as she gave Liz a little hug, saying "Good Job." Maybe she and Liz had a little discussion prior to the show talking about her nervousness. Still think Liz concentrates too much on her voice and that makes her look a little uncomfortable in that atmosphere. Love the EP songs so much!!! "Tra La La" (even though it's not really Liz's fault -- it's just a stupid kids' song "Wasted" -- I don't know what it is, but it's just never done anything for me. No bother though, it's less than 2 minutes long. "It's Sweet" -- I've heard it twice. There's no need to hear it again. Ever. "H.W.C" -- It has fun music, and the Dorien Gray part is catchy, but I just can't bear to sing along to the chorus. "Baby Got Going" -- Gets me going out of the room whenever it plays. "Ride" -- I used to like it. I also used to like "Tubthumper," so take my opinion with a huge grain of salt. "Jealousy" -- Frankly, I know some non-Liz fans who like this song more than I do, so I only play it so I can lead the conversation to Liz. "Oh, so you love this song? It's by my favorite singer, Liz Phair ... blah blah blah convert-a-fan-cakes." "Never Said" -- It's the only song of Liz's to be played on the radio, and I'm a bit sick of it. The shock of hearing Liz on the radio wore off, and I was left with a song which repeats the phrase "Never Said" a million times. And I used to hate "Chopsticks" for some long-forgotten reason, but I've recently rediscovered it, and it's now one of my favorite songs by anyone. Hmm, does anyone know how many songs Liz has sang, not counting covers? _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Anyone else have a Liz >song or >two they just can't bear (but do tolerate every now and then)? I'm still not all that keen on "Dogs of L.A.," although I've grown to appreciate it a little more over the years. Originally it just seemed aimless to me and didn't really go anywhere, and it seemed like a real buzzkill after "Cinco De Mayo." I always felt that the album lost some momentum by sequencing "Dogs" in between "Cinco" and "Whip-Smart." From the new album, I'd have to say "Favorite," although admittedly, it is very catchy. I like the idea more than the execution itself; the lyrics just don't do it for me. There's a few others that I don't particularly dislike, but have to be in the mood to listen to -- more often than not, I'll skip over "Baby Got Going" and "Shitloads of Money." The option is there in Windows Media Player (v7 and v9). I tried this on 2 different machines with CD-burners. It just says "no recording devices were found" or something like that. In WMP9, when I look at the license details, it says I have 3 CD transfers remaining, so I know the license allows it. Any suggestions? Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 22:20:16 -0400 From: "Marshall Levin" Subject: Re: obligatory "what if" track list question *please* excuse my ignorance -- what is "down" and where does one find it? thanks - ----- Original Message ----- Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 23:05:08 -0400 From: "Chris DeLisle" Subject: obligatory "what if" track list question now that we've got the 5 song EP in our hands ~ and let's not forget the song "Down" ~ what would have been your idea of the "ideal" tracklisting for Liz Phair's latest album? how about keeping your version from 14-16 tracks. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jun 2003 02:58:11 +0000 (UTC) From: Ray Subject: Re: Liz's CD Love and sex are ridiculous at any age. "Down" is an outtake from the sessions for the new record; if you go to lizphair.com, you can see the video for it that a director friend of Liz's made. I know that several people recorded the audio from the stream and have made MP3s of the song. I'm not sure which sites still have the song available for download, but if I recall it was offered at both Supernova [http://suprnova.lunamorena.net/] and Stratford-on-Guy [http://www.visi.com/~lazlo/liz/] in the past, so those might be the best places to check first. It really is a great song; I just hope it turns up on an official release at some point, either as a b-side or compilation track. Hope this helps, Jase ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 21:52:15 -0700 From: Kenneth Lee Subject: Liz / Time Out New York Hello all, Finally transcribed the June 19-26 issue of Time Out New York.
