Walt Vincent, the Matrix Label/Catalog Number: Capitol 22084 Release Date: June 24 Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: June 28, 2003 Those who have loyally followed Liz Phair's every move since her 1993 debut, Exile in Guyville, may not know quite what to make of her new album. Liz Phair is a pure pop record. Period. Of course, Liz Phair being Liz Phair, this disc may very well be banned from stores like Wal-Mart. Yes, Phair, a 36-year-old divorced mother, remains wonderfully mischievous, whimsical, and lustful ("Extraordinary," "Why Can't I," "H.W.C."). But she experiences blue moments, too. Ensconced in psychedelic flourishes, "Firewalker" finds the artist reflecting on a relationship gone wrong. But the spunkier moments, like "Rock Me," leave the most lasting impressions. To paraphrase Cyndi Lauper, girl still wants to have fun.-MP Quick note to any Aussies on the list, "Extraordinary" was played as The Panel went to a commercial break last Wednesday night - anybody else catch that? Anyone going to Tower (or your favorite record store) at midnight to buy the new album? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jun 2003 13:39:40 EDT From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: The Sunday NY Times Has the biggest slam I've ever seen of Liz, and in awhile for any artist period. It's in their Arts&Leasure section, and it not only is front page news, but is titled "Exile In Avail-ville." It's as annoying as it is funny, even those who don't like the album may not like the cattyness of the peice. it's a little too long to transcribe, but someone who has a scanner may want to. I liked the make-out-with-a-Marine story the best. I now have the sudden urge to go out and buy the Sunday edition of the NY Times, I want to read something scathing. I was just watching the videos for "Stratford-on-Guy" and "never Said" on the website, and it brought me back to the days when Liz Phair was weird and funny. Now she just seems like an ordinary, stupid bitch. Oh, nostalgia. In other news, I did an impromptu guest DJ thing with my girlfriend in Pittsburgh the other day, and I was so excited to find the new album in rotation. I got on the mike and made some severely disparaging remarks about it, told the listeners to NOT buy the album (ha, ha, ha) and then we played "Extraordinary." Hearing it in the context of college radio, it's even more awful than it was before, yet it's the #1 debut on the CMJ album charts and is the 8th most-played album on college radio, according to the current issue of Rolling Stone. Apparently she's doing a good job of confusing everyone, like Barry Walters from Rolling Stone (man, I was *so* with him until he compared "Rock Me" to the Exile in Guyville -- ha, ha, ha). Emil (who will definitely NOT be buying the album on Tuesday ... but who cares? I'm just ... one man. And not a Marine, either, goddammit.) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? He originally did the whole album, but several tracks went by the wayside when Phair later teamed up with pop hit-makers the Matrix (Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears). "We tried so hard to make an inexpensive record, pulling favors for very little money," Penn says. "I guess when she got some extra dough, she decided to write with the Matrix. I didn't know if any of my stuff was actually going to survive. "Liz is so wonderfully perverse," Penn continues. "I think she looks at working with the Matrix as like a performance art project, and they are remarkably good at what they do. It might have bothered me if she had gone with somebody more like me, but this is apples and oranges." http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=18243 ===== - ------------------------------------------------------------ Nashville - A Liz Phair Web Site http://www.geocities.com/robnashville - ------------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
