Here it is... Liz Phair Liz Phair (Capitol) Rating: * * * * Former introspective indie queen turns on the charm The crunchy guitars, thickly layered choruses, and oily-smooth production on Liz Phairs fourth album will likely shock those who prefer her rawest indie-rock sonics. However, underneath the pristine sheen, the Chicago resident is still the same hero to girls scrawling their innermost thoughts in a diary. Whether shes romancing a younger man (Your record collection dont exist / You dont even know who Liz Phair is), asserting her self-worth (I am extraordinary / If youd ever get to know me), or letting her tender side emerge (Why cant I breathe whenever I think about you?), Liz Phair proves that the one-time hard-liner still retains her trademark spunk. However, underneath the pristine > sheen, the Chicago resident is still the same hero > to > girls scrawling their innermost thoughts in a diary. As much as many of you may be sick of the 'negativity' informing the posts I and others of my ilk have been submitting, reviews like THAT are positively nauseating -- more nauseating than the album itself, I swear to god. I can't believe that after all these years, after all that supposed *focus* on her lyrics (as opposed to her guitar playing, which was equally unusual), muthafuckas still don't get it. These are the same people (this woman, as well as "noted feminist rock critic" Ann Powers, who wrote the equally-ass Blender review) who apparently found it oh-so-titillating that Liz Phair wanted to be a blow-job queen and a cunt in spring and lost it when she was 12, etc. Seriously. What bullshit! The "lo-fi" production (give me another break) wasn't the only thing that was lost in the transformation. Maybe it's because I am not (nor have I ever been) a girl scribbling my innermost thoughts in a diary, but the new Liz Phair is NOT the same "hero" to me. Not by a long shot. It's just all so... *insulting*, really. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry... - -emil __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! People! You don't have to sit around watching VH1 all day to catch the "Why Can't I" video! You can see it now, in high quality, at lizphair.com. I gotta say, I was expecting the worst (based on Joyner's description), but, um, I really like it. Like, a lot. This is definitely her coolest video since the Whip-smart era (in my "humble" opinion); it might as well have been directed by her. I don't think there's one thing I *don't* like about it. Now, while the song itself does have that stupid-radio-song-stuck-in-your-head quality (going on full-strength), I was able to ignore all that and just dig the visuals (it helped loads to view it on a computer *without* any sound at all - ha, ha!). Plus, the video seems to hammer home the idea of it being a radio (jukebox?) hit, in like this pseudo-cheesy, retro way. I don't know if I'm articulating that well enough. But I am SOLD, baby. At least on this one. And it features the return of her Musicmaster! Yay! I was wondering where that guitar went. (I should also say that I like the video's portrayal of Liz as 'bandleader', actually *playing* an instrument, which is highly reminiscent of the "Supernova" video.) Speaking of guitars, what's up with the Field Day photo at suprnova.lunamorena.net? Is that a *Telecaster* she's playing? Now I've seen EVERYTHING. Damn you, Liz - you evil, manipulative wench. Leave me alone! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Or did it just get updated? How did I miss this? First off, the Why Can't I? Video is streamable from the website. Now that I've found the flash version, I see that they've got it, Down, WCSE, and Rocket Boy (major cool points there) for viewing. The quality is even decent, but its the usual DRM crap... my firewall logs are going insane from invalid port accesses. But I digress... The Why Can't I video didnt' start out well to me - she just didn't seem to be having much fun and it was fairly boring. It was almost taunting to me after we all waited for so long for a new record - the video is all about Liz albums. Cruel cruel cruel. After seeing her in LA and Austin, the one thing that I really remember was how much fun she was having (though I can tell shes really sick of people asking for Flower) with the camera, the audience, herself, and her songs. The video just didn't have it until she started kicking at the camera towards the end. After that, I seemed to like it much more. Oi, and the background for the Biography page is... well... I really don't know what to think. As halojocelyn said before the LA show, "damn she looks like a slut, what would her mother think?" (or something like that). For a 36 year-old though... damn. Anyone want to start a betting pool on what on earth will be in the "Scrapbook" section? Okay, enough ranting for now.
