Supernova (this can't help but put everyone in a good mood) 3. Perfect World 4. Extraordinary 5. Never Said 6. Nashville 7. Baby Got Goin' 8. HWC (which I think she partly wrote so she doesn't have to play Flower anymore) 9. Fuck and Run 10. Whip-Smart (b/w this and Divorce Song, but we never hear this) 11. Whatever Makes You Happy 12. Little Digger 13. Shatter 14. May Queen (I always thought Shatter followed by May Queen would be tear-inducing) Anyway, I'm off to work . . . anyone else have one? james ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 09:52:14 -0500 From: Andrea Uptmor Subject: Dream Set list If she played it I would cry really, really hard. Although some classic songs by some classic bands may lack an explicit literal meaning, they come with a certain visceral punch and sound cool and allow meanings to be formed around them. The lyrics on "Liz Phair" are bland, and they suck. You can like the album all you want, but don't compare the lyrics to anything of any merit, or pretend their overwhelming normality is a sign of some new artistic direction. jeremy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 11:19:31 -0700 (PDT) From: Emil Breton Subject: Re: lyrically speaking jeremy: > The lyrics on "Liz Phair" are bland, and they suck. > You can like the album all you want, but don't > compare the lyrics to anything of any merit, or > pretend their overwhelming normality is a sign of > some new artistic direction. I agree, but I would have said "You may NOT like the album all you want." You know, because I'm like a total Nazi. j/k I think the 'disconnect' between those who think the lyrics suck and those who think they're great (and pack the same emotional punch as, say, "Shatter") is that the one side is talking about the *form* and the other is talking about *content*. I think when people (myself included) say "these lyrics are not very Liz-like", it doesn't mean "this doesn't sound like the kind of sentiment she would've expressed in 1994"; rather, "the Liz Phair of 1994 would have found a cleverer/more obtuse/elliptical way of saying this". Like, Al Madrid is saying "Oh, that song 'It's Sweet' really gets to me, the same way 'Shatter' always has." And that's great. It's good to feel that an artist is speaking to you. But I think there are a lot of people (although they might just be the minority) who were, by and large, more impressed with Liz's songwriting form (which is separate from content) on her first 2 records (and, to a lesser extent, wcse) -- not really so much *what* she was saying but *how* she was saying it (bizarre metaphors/song structures/chord structures/lines-per-"stanza"). And I don't even think Liz herself understands that, which is REALLY troubling. That's why she's going around saying to journalists "What's the big deal? 'Extraordinary' is SO me." Yeah, it is, and the Guyville equivalent (I think) of that song is probably "Strange Loop". But just listen to those songs and the difference knocks you upside the head, it's so apparent. Same 'sentiment', pretty much exactly, but the style of "Extraordinary" is so *not* Liz, unless you count that one note in the opening riff that seems at odds with the others (which I actually really dig). Just my thoughts, as always. i can't believe the record is coming out in less than 2 weeks. Wow. I can't wait to wait around for a used copy so that I may enjoy those fleeting "vintage Liz moments" I've been hearing so much about. - -Emil __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! This is the same station that Greg Kot and Jim Virogoties (something like that) have a show on. They are the guys that she wouldn't give the time of day to at South By Southwest. Thats it!
