I haven't been able to find the new issue anywhere and I can't help but be a little curious, as someone just posted this on one of the message boards I frequent: "There's an interesting article in Ice Magazine that talks about Liz's 5 year hiatus and how she originally wanted to be dropped from her label to be on another indie and had recorded songs with Brad Wood that never made it onto the new album." It's kind of interesting how Liz said in that one article that she was sick of the whole "indie" thing, yet had wanted to sign with a smaller label again. What made her change her mind? This seems like a far cry from Liz's current stance on wanting to sell records and get on the radio (and being unapologetic about it). Also, it's kind of interesting that none of the songs recorded with Brad made it onto the album, when material produced by Michael Penn, R. Walt Vincent, and Liz herself did. I would imagine the stuff he worked on would be as relatively accessible as that of any of the other non-Matrix producers. Nonetheless, I'm just glad that they're still working together, even if the tracks may not see the light of day. Jase ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 05:04:41 EDT From: NDisgize2@aol.com Subject: Blender Just in case anyone was interested, there is a tiny Liz aritcle in the new issue of Blender (the one with Jewel on it....forever intertwined these two are it seems). It has about 5 or 6 questions and 2 pics, one in the index and one of her new 'sex sells more records so im going to try and act all sexy' pics, which, seems like they all came from one long photo shoot. Just a heads up to those interested. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Jun 2003 10:09:51 -0400 From: Dan MacDonald Subject: album cover what does everyone think of the cover of the album? her with her banged up guitar, legs spread and hair in her face? i kinda like it. i'd like it even better if i felt okay about the content of the album, but i'm still waiting for it to grow on me. just wondering. i know there was lots of uproar about the wcse cover...i personally didn't like it at first. this one is pretty cool though. dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 07:35:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Emil Breton Subject: Ice interview excerpts Okay, I did some "sleuthing" and all I could come up with was: 1) an abbreviated version of the Ice article/interview (which revealed practically nothing - -- not to worry, I can pick up the current issue at my neighborhood indie record shop later today); and 2) the following excerpt from the 'out-takes' of the interview they conducted. Maybe some of the more internet-savvy among us can figure out how to get around the apparent technical glitch on the Ice website, but I can't. I did a Google search for, like, "ice interview phair" or something, and I found last Thursday's news update. For the life of me I could not find last Friday's update, which was supposed to include the second half of the out-takes from the interview. Perhaps a friendly e-mail to the staff at the Ice website would yield the results we're looking for. Until then: Greetings! Welcome to the Thursday edition of the ICE daily news update. Today and tomorrow we will deliver a load of excess material from our interview with Liz Phair conducted just last month. In it we discussed her new self-titled disc (Capitol, June 24) her first in five years and much more. "We spent a lot of time on every single mix. I had piles of notes. We were messing around with Love/Hate Transmission, we were messing around with My Bionic Eyes we did a lot of remixing on Why Cant I? "Its funny because what I wanted to make five years ago was almost what I made [in the end]. I forgot about that along the way, and Ive done this before. Right after Whip-Smart, I knew what I wanted to do for the next record and then promptly forgot about that. If you have an overriding impulse toward a direction, youll stay on that direction, and if you take a longer journey, the reason why its finished is probably because it all comes back together with that original vision. "What I really wanted to do for this record was have it was kind of like a Fisherspooner idea, like an art concept. I wanted a fake-live recording so that what you heard was like if you were listening to a live show, but it was all done in a studio. The band elements could change each time. It was very loose. I naturally gravitated toward all songs that have a band feel or a lot of instrumentation or sound like a big-band jam. Whether your version of that would be sloppier than what my version is to me, because Im a guitar-singer, thats just what I am, me and a guitar. Every song on here sounds like theres a band out there jamming with it. "I look at an album as something different. I look at it as an art piece; I dont see it as part of a music career. According to the music-career clock of touring, recording, releasing, touring, recording, releasing, Ive always been an artist first. And I came from a visual arts background, so to me its not finished till its ready, till its what it should be, and you just know it, you just know in your heart its finished. And I just knew it." Stay tuned tomorrow for more words from Liz! Kurt Orzeck Managing Editor, ICE __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I've heard they are looking for a different venue. MTV says possibly Giants Stadium ( in New Jersey) I'm thinking Jones Beach (Western Long Island) though it may be too small to handle the crowd. If anyone hears anything please let me know. + Does anyone know if I can still get tickets for the Bowery show at the box office? The Ticketweb operator made it sound as if there were separate ticketing amounts. It's been a while. I need my fix. I'm a bit freaked about all the radio play she's getting and (who mentioned this?) that one station had her song as the most requested that night. I heard her on WPLJ here which I usually never listen to unless a good 80's song comes on. I wonder how popular she will get, what market she will attract and why I have to share instead of having Liz all to myself in my walkman. After WCSE I thought "Adult Contemporary." I'm still unsure of my opinion of the new album. WHERE are all those songs we thought would be on it? Where's BloodKeeper? - ---melissa ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Surf the web up to FIVE TIMES FASTER!
