Before I pronounce Liz "dead or alive," or attempt any critiques, I am going to see her perform! (good idea?)..see where she is really "at" regardless of what she has out for sale. So, can anyone give us an idea of what to expect when she opens (accoustically?) with the Flaming Lips? I will see her twice (LA, San Diego). Set list secrets? Should be a great show..small venues and the Lips! Cheers, Wes ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 May 2003 10:23:40 -0500 From: "Michael Kaufmann" Subject: new liz I was ready to be unimpressed by this new liz, but have to say I'm not depressed by it entirely either. It's definitely her "pop" album, but on hearing it I think along with the glossy radio friendliness I hear an energy and confidence that was lacking sometimes in wcse. I'm hoping the next one might (might) hit the balance more between pop and girly. I also think it's telling that the old emotional note I look for in Liz comes in Little Digger, her poignant song of explanation to her son about the adult problems bending his little world out of shape. "I've done the damage, the damage is done. I pray to god that I'm damaged one" gives that emotional kick of something like "I know that I don't always realize/ How sleazy it is/Messing with these guys/But something about just being with you/Slapped me right in the face Nearly broke me in two..." But this time it's not about relationships, which instead are jokey romps in front of the TV (or video game), in the laundry hamper, or in bed. Little Diggers travels the more difficult terrain of the last few years--as does Take a Look, which comes just before it. Finally, does anyone else think that HWC sounds very Aimee Mannish? Michael Penn didn't do that one, did he? Hey guys! I've already started tabbing out the new albums, and I was looking for a Liz tab site to upload them to. Anyone run one? Or wanna start and manage one? Just e-mail me back privately. At the moment I've completed "Why Can't I" (so easy), and started "Extrodinary". Next I wanna do "Red Light Fever". Just e-mail me off list. Thanks guys. However, to those who didn't like my "VINTAGE LIZ" comment, I stick to my description of the new album. Why? That's for me to know and you to find out if you dare. I know Liz Phair's style just as well as any of you and when you strip these songs from there " hyper-produced collaborations" what will we get? Liz in all of her rawness and quirkiness. Liz Phair to me is not this Goddess that some of you make her out to be because she sang "silly songs on a message machine." Liz is just so fuckin cool whether she is creating music that way, or using the Matrix to get her style of music on the radio so that she can become famous and make shitloads of money. It's still vintage Liz and believe me, I'd be right there with ya'll in saying that the new album sucks if I didn't hear Vintage Liz in those songs. That's just my opinion, but it is a valid one, no? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. After seeing that photo from Jane magazine at Ken's site, I'm ready to say: All is forgiven! (See? That was easy.) Kate was right -- she actually does look like herself again, for the first time since... 1994? Forgive me, please, but there was something about her appearance, starting in 1998 with those god-awful desert/canyon publicity shots for wcse, that just seemed... not quite right? I'm terrible at ascertaining what it is that I find attractive in a person (I never even notice eye color on anyone, for example), but after seeing this new photo (and reading the text), I'm going to say it was probably her eyeliner. I don't know. Maybe the more fashion-savvy among us can help me out (Meredith Robbins, I'm talking to you): what *is* different about her appearance in that photo? Helpful hint: while you're checking it out (at http://members.fortunecity.com/mesmerizing/page860.html), click back to the one preceding (from MTV). The difference is shocking. I think I'm going to have to get a copy of Jane; this one is refrigerator-worthy. Thanks, Ken! (This is the part where several people tell me to fuck off and stop being so superficial and creepy) Speaking of "vintage Liz": Al Madrid, are you talking about those tiny moments in the Matrix songs where the rest of the crap fades away and all you hear is Liz strumming her guitar? I agree, *that* sounds like "vintage Liz". I guess it would be cool to hear "Why Can't I" on the radio, you don't hear too many Musicmaster guitars (or any guitars that are recognizable by their tone) on Top 40 these days. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? (maybe i'm wrong; jase, can you confirm? i dunno, it seems like the numbers really thinned out after that was released.) like john kim, i stuck around just to see whatever else people are listening to and watching and talking about. screw liz.... anyway, as far as the above quote goes, maybe she *is* an idiot.... she sells herself short in this totally bizarre way. i don't get that one either. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 May 2003 16:41:45 -0700 From: Kenneth Lee Subject: Liz / NYTimes Hello again, Just added the New York Times article (the relevant portions, that is).
