Subject: questions ok, here's a coupla questions: what happened to the original lead singer of flaming lips? last i heard he took off for india or something and never came back (???) anyone? bueller? AND does the new throwing muses include tanya donnelly? 'cause wasn't their last album just kristin and that other guy? ***** and checked this: i mentioned to steve in a private e-mail that those matrix songs make WCSE sound like "rubber soul" and--wacky--chris mentions it in a post. wow.... ******** that pitchfork article was indeed pretty sharp; and this part: "And please don't try totell us that this all some kind of ironic gambitdesigned to play the game oh-so-well, because we'rejust not buying it. But what the fuck, the12-year-olds won't know the difference anyway. Liz'sshark? Consider it jumped. Her corner? Pretty muchpainted." Hey, Emil. Nota bene: Put down the Chomsky. Your brain will love you for it. Every time I see a picture of him sitting a typewriter with a pipe, I keep thinking of a Folgers Coffee-esque voiceover fading in: "We secretly switched Noam Chomsky's private mix of tobacco and cannabis with powered lead flakes. Let's see if he notices..." I suggest William F. Buckley as a replacement.. 1. To address a point raised in the last several digests: Just because it sounds good to the fans doesn't mean it sounds good to the artist. I personally liked a lot of the "original" ECP sound---"South Dakota" is one of my favorite "under-the-radar" songs because of her voice in that one, in part. (The absolutely ridiculous lyrics are the other; mesas and what sounds like lumberchucks are funny.) That doesn't mean that ECP likes singing it or particularly likes the recorded version. I could walk up and say, "LIZ! OMFG! THAT SONG ROOLZ!!!!!" ECP could very well likely wince a bit, say a pained "Thanks" and inwardly cringe, knowing that it "really wasn't that great". It's a question of personal standards, you see. Personal standards. I've done things in the past that people have come over to me and said, "Oh that was great, you did so wonderful" and so forth, and I've known better---I wasn't happy with the performance and I wasn't wanting to hear criticism. Not to establish any sort of link between Miz Phair and myself, but perhaps there's something of that in her psychological makeup that led her to want to make "a well-made album" or perhaps she kept a list of "Things to Do When I've Got the Money to Do the Album Right", and voice lessons or slicker production were two of those things. I don't know. I just don't know. OK, Don Imus quote out of the way. Still waiting on the album with a certain amount of fixed trepidation, fear and loathing, what have you. This is actually good, since that's how I used to regard new releases from all my 'flagship' artists. 2. By the way: What's a White Stripe, if not something that you buy in a bar? 3. Clear Channel, bleh. Glen/nn Beck, from my aesthetic point of view, is a hack. I am amused to hear about the "evils" of Clear Channel under an emergency situation here, because I just read a fevered post to another mailing list elsewhere about the evils of Clear Channel, which included off-list references to some "independent" media organization's caterwauling about a place in North Dakota. Waah waah Michael Powell, waah waah. They'll run afoul of the economy or SEC/FTC regulators sooner or later. 4. List wars are fun. 5. If you don't like Liz, then move to Canada. Well, Mexico; don't want to wish death on the anti-Lizicans. Where are my jackboots? 6. This new disc better not have some alien-to-good listening copy protection scheme. I like Liz, but darned if I'll subsidize the market entry of what I regard (without a legal argument as of yet, though) as an illegal attempt to control my private property. 7. Robert Joyner, if you even suggest a J.Ho-ish title for ECP again, I will find R. Lee Ermey (or the guy from maddox.xmission.com) and send them to remedy your problem. Some things should not be spoken of---the thought of Liz Phair in ghetto gold and those "fader" sunglasses is a scary one. I'd draw the line at "I'm Still Lizzy from New Trier"---as Carrie Fisher once said, "Into the garbage chute, flyboy!" No actual malice was used during the composition of this post and none is to be implied from any content in this message. Sign me, "The long-winded and ostensibly Republican Michael Worrell who goes on about God knows what." "I'm Still Lizzy from New Trier",......that is funny as hell.....made me do a spit take. Best to have a laugh with all the new album stuff. Glad to see someone else on the list has a sense of humor about all this. And a shout out to whoever said "My Favorite Underwear" sounded like a Hanes Her Way commercial, I think i pulled something laughing at that one. Just think of the marketing opportunities. "Flower"- Valtrex, "Fuck and Run" - Trojan Condoms. Do a whole Moby-like marketing blitz. I'm still trying to picture Liz with the headset microphone that she mentioned in her interview with Ken. LIz With Choreography? I'm still haven't gotten over that weird stretching-yoga stuff she did on the 99 college tour. later Robert (np- some L Phizzy) ===== - ------------------------------------------------------------ Nashville - A Liz Phair Web Site http://www.geocities.com/robnashville - ------------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? It is the muses from their mid90s power trio days (Kristin, Dave, and Bernard) with the lovely ms donelly on backup vox. This album rocks harder than anything they've ever done. lots of people are saying its a return to their roots, but it isn't nearly as startling as those first few records. Kristin's voice is sounding ROUGH but it works with the new sound. anyways, they are in the middle of a mini-tour and here's the rest of the dates: Tue 05/06/03 Los Angeles, CA Knitting Factory Wed 05/07/03 Los Angeles, CA Knitting Factory Fri 05/09/03 San Francisco, CA Slim's Sat 05/10/03 San Francisco, CA Slim's Mon 05/12/03 Seattle, WA Graceland Tanya will only be at the LA shows. She was a guest at all the previous east coast dates, and it sounds like she put in a lot of stage time (performing for around 8 out of 24 songs, according to the setlists ive seen) They will be playing All Tomorrow's Parties in hollywood on June 21st. I'll be at that fest. It doesnt sound like they are going to ever record again, or tour, but who knows, no one thought this one would happen. I am thinking about going to Austin City Limits festival thingie where liz is playin...but they took the lineup down and said none of it was confirmed...hmmm. the coolest record cover ive seen is tori's boys for pele... steve. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 2003 00:01:49 -0500 From: "INMAN, DAVID B" Subject: RE: reply ... sorta had the chance to see slobberbone in a very small club in little rock, as in everytime the bass player sang, i had to move my head so his bass wouldn't hit me - VERY cool show. slobberbone RAWKS! - -----Original Message----- From: sandra [mailto:mesmerizing@earthlink.net] Sent: Saturday, May 03, 2003 12:40 AM To: support-system@smoe.org Subject: reply ... sorta > That is all. > > - -Michael > apropos of nothing, but are you a slobberbone fan? also -- favorite album cover: faith no more, the real thing. sandra ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #110 ************************************
