I have to weigh in on this one, because I don't think the big media companies are to blame for the current pathetic state of the airwaves, I think we are. Not, of course, the enlightened handful of folks on this list, but "listeners" in general. You're right that the honchos at Clear Channel et al don't care whether they play good music, but they also have no agenda to intentionally play Avril, Brooks & Dunn, Celine, and their loathesome ilk. They only want to play what people will listen to in reasonably large numbers, so that they can sell air time. In a city where one of the big media players owns 7 or 8 stations, if even 20 or 25% of the people wanted to listen to vital, innovative, soulful music, then they would play it, because they would make money doing so. All we can do is listen to our college stations, and support them when they have their pledge drives. If the college stations in your town ever attract big numbers, you can rest assured the Clear Channels will copy their formats and/or playlists. It's the same version that's on Liz's website. Overall feelings on the album: As I said in an email to Dana, it's taken me a while to decide what I think of the album. My thoughts as I listened went something like this: Hey, I kinda like this. Hey, I kinda like this a LOT. Hmmm. Wait a minute. Wait! This sucks. This sucks HARD. This is AWFUL. But hey ... wait another minute ... that's kinda cool. And that's kinda clever. Hmmm. You know, some of this is brilliant. And some of it is just ok. But most of it is brilliant. I love it! Honestly, there's not one song that I couldn't stand to listen to. No eternal skippers like "Uncle Alvarez." I also should mention that I'm just not a huge fan of studio "Exile." Truthfully, I didn't fully get Liz till I saw her live. To this day I prefer bootlegged versions of her guyville songs to the studio recordings. Also, while I'm sure this album's content might bore some people, I'm fascinated. Enthralled. I can't help but nosily relate 80 percent of the songs to her marriage. So many songs I'm just positive are directed squarely at her ex-husband. They probably aren't, but well, you know. I live in my own head, not hers. Sorry for the random song order, but here I go. Why Can't I? - Matrix This is SO a single. Who is that being echoed? That's not Liz. Ugh. Awful. Awful. You know, it's still Lizzy lyrics though, I have to say. She also throws in the obligatory "fuck." Wonder if that's gonna be played as is? It's kinda buried. I never listen to the radio or watch MTV so I had never heard "Complicated," but earlier this week I was at a listening station in a record store and I listened to it. Y'all are right. It's, like, the same song. Don't you think it's gonna be HUGE? The third chorus or so (after, god help me, the BRIDGE), she sings without the overdub on her voice. Something tells me that this is what the demo of this song sounds like. Take a Look- Michael Penn I've always liked this. Always. Since it was first posted here. No surprise it's Michael Penn. Favorite - Matrix Kinda surprised this is a Matrix song. Classic Liz metaphor. LOVE how she moves from talking about "it" to talking about "you" with no transition. "Slipping you on tonight," that's just a perfect Liz phrase. Love/Hate - Liz I have always hated this song, particularly that keyboardy shit, which unfortunately she left in. However, this redoing of the song is a lot more palatable to me than the "love/hate" chanting from the original version. Very 80s to me, like Saga's "On the Loose" -- which I liked a lot, but of course that was 1982. Bionic Eyes - Liz I'm "eh" on this song. But it strikes me as one of those songs that I'll learn to love rather than learn to dislike. I think its placement in the seventh-inning-stretch of the album contributes to my ho-hum opinion rather than the actual quality of the song. I do have to say that it's kind of annoying to hear her voice so clearly -- what? computerized? throughout the whole song. "As I got older I learned to step out of the lines, and make up my own mind." Not bad. It's Sweet - Michael Penn Does anyone else hear the ABBA in this song? I really like it. I can totally see myself dancing to this at a club. Like, the kind of clubs used to like to dance in years ago -- the ones that played the Cure and Blur rather than, say, Rick Astley. And how Liz are these lyrics? "It's sweet how you believe you're in love with me." Firewalker I have always adored Firewalker. The new intro is just fine with me. (Vasant! The intro sounds like Versus to me!) Anyone else notice how she's changed "despite all they say" to "in spite of all they say"? Good Love Never Dies Who else hears the Beatles in this? I'm very impressed with the songwriting here. Gosh, this sentiment makes me sad. Seriously, she seems so torn about this divorce. And who's she talking to when she says "I like watching you out there. It's comforting." Is it Jim? Red Light Fever About Jim? This is a lilty Liz song that would be at home on WCSE. I love to sing along to this while I am folding laundry. Extraordinary - Matrix I can't say anything more about this song that hasn't already been said. I like it. I just like it. Rock Me - Matrix OK, this song is funny. I mean, isn't it? To be honest, I hated it for quite a while. The lyrics, the production, the MEDIOCRITY of it. Verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus. "I'm starting to think that young guys rule." Good fucking God. Then I learned to smile at it. Biggest mitigating factor: "Your record collection don't exist. You don't even know who Liz Phair is." * I'm gonna hate when this song gets played, but I'll giggle behind my hand when the new phans go to pick up exile and are shocked. Friend of Mine - Michael Penn Very much classic Liz. Yes yes. Also Beatlesque to me. About Jim also? Yes, I apparently am obsessed with their marriage's demise. "I miss you so badly." Argh! Little Digger - Michael Penn I will confess. This song has made me cry. Twice. Lining up the trucks on the bed. Praying to God she hasn't damaged him. That he'll understand some day. This is a fucking classic Liz masterpiece. Very simple, simple lyrics that tell a complex story. In a mere scene snapshot, the way she does so well. Hot White Cum - R. Walt Vincent I dare you to not end up inadvertently singing this song to yourself. I really don't expect anything less from Liz. Yeah, this song helps her retain her "girl cusser" title. Eh, I guess that's ok with me. And how 'bout that " harmonica? Did Ryan Adams sneak into her recording session? Not that far-fetched a notion. I guess that's it. I can't wait for more in June. Tell you what: anyone who wants a copy can email me. Of course, I know that anyone who emails me will buy the official release. Duh. As if you wouldn't. The easier you make it for me -- blank CD, proper packaging and postage -- the more likely I am to do this in a timely fashion. I'm a busy working mom. = ) sandra * I am sure I've mentioned before that that used to be my litmus test for musical knowledge in potential men. They didn't have to LIKE Liz, but they had to have heard of her. And yes, the guy who thought she sang "I played hockey just two days ago" in Polyester Bride passed. Last guy I dated before I met my husband, in fact. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #103 ************************************
