Foxx" Subject: Liz's mom Do you think Liz really cares what the fans think about the new album? Whether or not her being forced into the Matrix is true or not, I'm going to believe it...because it's nice to believe. Same with the "Why Can't I?" thing dp mentioned. Really, though, like...with "Hot White Cum" and that advance cover and the contact with Ken, Liz is at going about this in a pretty cool way. Anyway...it's taken me like a month...but I've decided that if I just forget that it's Liz Phair and I've been waiting for five years for this album (well, really three for me), then it's actually pretty good. It's, for real, a lot of fun. Like...a *lot* of fun. I still skip over "Scared" and "Love / Hate", though. The lyrics...are just slightly too much. * This probably completely devalues my opinion, but does anybody else really like the new Madonna CD? It's probably her best. That's not saying a whole lot, but...yeah, it's pretty good. "Mother and Father" is a mess, the lyrics to "I'm So Stupid" are so awful they almost bring down the whole album, and "Hollywood" is in serious need of remixing; but...yeah, it's pretty good. I can't say if it'll grow on me or just get dull with further listens, though. With Madonna it can go anyway. Either way, though, "X-Static Process" is a pretty amazing song. It's so...uncharacteristically girly...but still Madonna. It's so...pleasant. I love it. It's not better than "Ray of Light", but it's definitely up there...with Madonna's best. Anyway, the album as a whole...is definitely better than music, and, yeah, probably her best ever. It's weird that it's just getting so-so reviews...considering how much critics loved Music. I believe RollingStone ended their review with something entirely vicious like "Making music probably isn't the girl's strong-point anymore, but it's ok, Madonna. You've always got those wildly successful side-projects to fall back on." That sort of threw me off...because RollingStone is usually completely in love with Madonna. I don't know. I'm done. If I had the same expectations for a Liz Phair as I did for a Madonna CD, I would probably have been totally blown away by LP. - -Mark _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2003 19:51:45 -0400 From: owner-support-system@smoe.org (by way of Jase ) Subject: Bounced message Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2003 08:30:36 -0700 (PDT) From: m kaufmann Subject: liz's new audience To: support-system-digest@smoe.org >>> owner-support-system-digest@smoe.org 04/22/03 00:18 AM >>> But what does (below) this mean???? (asks Lilrussiangirl) >>And the weird thing is that the label is so, like wanting Liz to be, like superstar, that theyre sidestepping alternative radio people. - ------I think Robert's ripostes hit the mark, but as I was mulling over this information it struck me that the plan appears to be to put Liz's latest out as a "new" artist (hence the unimaginative self-titled title), figuring that her celebrity up to this point is relatively obscure and in the sofardistant past that the younger crowd they're tilting isn't likely to remember back that far. For the rest of us, they're attitude is like Liz's--those who want to come along fine, those who don't fine too. In other words, thanks for all the fish, but I have others to fry. I think to a large extent it is brought on by some sort of either explicit or implicit Capitol ultimatum (sell more records or else), and so it's hard to fault Liz for going along, but as I've said before it does suggest a certain lack of either artistic self-awareness or interest. Probably both. But they're (she?) are probably right. We'll buy her regardless, so why worry about us when new fanbases beckon. In a way it's akin to the Vitamin K makeover, though it's hard to imagine catching Liz doing a lite version of HWC on a nickelodeon tv show.
