It was cool to hear a Liz song on the radio and it sounded great. The DJ said something like, "That's a new one from Liz Phair and the song's called Extraordinary and it is off of her new Extraordinary self-title album..." (He was raving about the new album) :) Cool. :) P.S. for those of you who don't like the song Scared, why? It is one of the few songs on the ablum in which Liz' guitar playing is soooo prevelant. Subject: have a day derek! you knucklehead.... yeah, you told me you did a remix of "start again" (i *love* that song...i like the chord progressions tons); i seriously need to check that out... what do you know about his former band, hinterland? seems i should investigate that as well. it was funny: i started talking to gerry and this guy came up and was kinda like, "hey, i don't mean to interrupt, but why aren't you guys selling anything??" he was all perplexed about it and was going, "well, who do i talk to?" i don't know if he wanted to run it or have a hand in it or what. but what bugged me was that he was all sorta up in gerry's face about it and i kept thinking "dude, he has NOTHING to do with selling duncan's CDs, ok? nothing. this is a label issue." so i finally said, "you need to talk to atlantic." and the guy retorts, "they'd just tell me to talk to duncan." and i shot back "no, they wouldn't...." he didn't even listen. i was gonna add "oh, yeah, and if you ask *real nicely* i'm sure they'll give you his home phone number....yeah." anyway, i was looking at the guy and then at the floor and then at gerry, who was looking at the floor and then at the guy and then at me.... oy! but he was handling it so much better than i was, 'cause when i'm confronted with such abject stupidity, my first instinct is to take that person's head off.... i had to force myself into silence--'cause, really, he wasn't even talking to me--and it was clear this wasn't easy for me. anyway. i dunno, i figured the guy was either drunk or insane. wacky. so i talked to my brother and we got around to liz ('cause his birthday's one day before hers) and he said he saw something where she said she didn't even want to release "why can't i?" at all. i guess that wasn't supposed to show up anywhere. but some friend of hers wanted to do a video to it using some "new video technique" and so she agreed to do the video for it. so i go to my brother, "and, lo and behold, that song is the first single" and he was like, "no way...." anyhoo.... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 14:30:31 -0700 (PDT) From: robert joyner Subject: Re: huh? - --- LilRussianGirl@aol.com wrote: > > >>And the weird thing is that the label is so, > like wanting Liz to be, like superstar, that theyre > sidestepping > alternative radio people. I would interpret this as probably several things. 1. Her record company more than likely is limiting press access to liz, denying folks like alt radio shows and critics like Kot and Derogatis. Why open yourself for criticism to a radio segment that the album OBVIOUSLY isn't directed at. 2. They are probably not sending out the free swag to the stations....not sending out the promo to alt stations, not providing them with free copies of the album to give out to listeners as contest winners, posters and what not. Capitol paying record promotion folk to work the top 40 stations, not the alt stations, advertising in trade journals for adds on top 40 stations, not alt radio. 3. Probably not gonna be doing the alt radio summer radio festivals (i remember last time she did the WBCN and WFNX Christmas shows and did a full concert on WBCN). More than likely she'll be playing the top 40 station's local shindig with a dozen other bands, nicely sandwiched between B2K and Kelly Osbourne. (don't get me wrong, i'm not complaining about the recent set of pictures, but) do you think she's trying to compete too much (these days) with the younger skanks of the pop world? i always got the feeling that Liz sometimes tries too hard (in sports, we call that "pressing"), that she doesn't fully comprehend her gifts or how much she means to all of us here. i'm sure everyone has some kind of response as to what Liz's true appeal is. to me, it's never been the cover of EIG, or the lyrics in "Flower"...but the vulnerability in her voice, the fearlessness of her convictions and the adventurousness (is that a word?) of her songs and lyrics accompanied by her guitar. i suppose the same is true of Bob Dylan. of course, Dylan hasn't looked THAT attractive in, well, years! :) not sure what i'm getting at with all of this ~ perhaps you can pull something from all these threads... ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V6 #98 ***********************************
