I don't usually listen, because it's usually music that I wouldn't hear for a reason -- most of it's not to my liking. However, I flipped on my boombox, preparing to write up an English paper. I heard the end of some forgettable song, and then Liz's name. I jammed a cassette in my boombox, and recorded the lengthy conversation the two jocks had before playing "Extraordinary." This is only the third time I've heard Liz played on the radio, discounting the many, many times Q101 played "Polyester Bride" back in '98. Here's a transcribed version of the conversation. I missed taping the first sentance or two, but you get the gist of the talk. (And sorry, I've forgotten the DJs names, although I'm pretty sure that the female one is Karla soandso, so they're IDed as M & F.) M: We gotta be upfront. Its slightly different from what youre accustomed for Liz. Meaning in sense that the songs are there, but theyre just really well-produced. Well leave it at that. F: "Theyre not as raw as Exile in Guysville [sic]." M: "This indie, low-fi quality is out the window. Its the opening track to her record and I think its the most aggressive song one of the most aggressive songs on the there. And the weird thing is that the label is so, like wanting Liz to be, like superstar, that theyre sidestepping alternative radio people. I think you need to write to your congressman-at-the-label." F: "*laughs* And tell them that you want Liz Phair back." M: "Alternative radio wants Liz Phair back! And uh, I know that you guys Q101 wanted to play this, like, song and the label said no. So write you congressman-at-the-label again." F: "So they said no, so were gonna play it now?" M: "So were gonna play it anyway. This is not the single that youll be hearing on other radio stations. This is what you feel in the best song for *our* radio station and our show. Its called Extraordinary. Its from Liz Phair, from her self-titled record thats coming out in May or June?" F: "I dont know. Whatever. Its TBA, Q101." *Play Extraordinary* _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8.
