Extraordinary, Why Can't I and Rock Me. They were cute and catchy, and the lyrics had a bit of the quintessential Liz Phair subversiveness that we all love. I will always love Liz Phair, no matter what, because after a decade of listening to her, it's an unconditional love. I want to hear the rest of the new album before I decide that Liz has become too mainstream sounding and radio-ready. It was a bit disturbing to hear Avril Lavigne flavors in these songs, especially because if it wasn't for Liz Phair, Avril wouldn't exist! I know Liz wants to succeed in the business and sell records. Unfortunately, in order for her to do that, she has to deal with all the bullshit that is the nature of today's music industry, which has gotten crappier and more obnoxious since she started her career in music. I hope that the other songs on the album have more edge. I guess I'll just have to go back and listen to her old albums for comfort. ~Andrea S. *Can't we petition someone to make it so that outside stuff is the key to happiness? I do completely agree, Jase. I used to be (that is definitely past-tense) an enormous Ani fan, but she lost me after _Living in Clip,_ when she completely quit self-editing and started releasing everything and anything she came up with. And while it's true that she's worked hard, her success has to do with her keen business acumen and high profit margins: 1. She has done endorsement ads in the guitar magazines...very lucrative and not in keeping with her putative anti-corporate/indie stance. 2. At least when I was in the know with indie record-store purchasing, Righteous Babe releases wholesale prices were FAR higher than most indies'. Her list prices are still high today (most single RB discs are $15.98, compared with Fugazi's $10.98). 3. Her career took off in a HUGE way after a 1996 MTV News show about her. This was the famous one where her fans were giving the MTV crews a hard time while they filmed, blah blah blah. But it still raised her profile significantly, by exposing her to a huge audience that loved her music. 4. She did the theme song to Julia Roberts' _My Best Friend's Wedding,_ a cover of "Wishin' and Hopin'." Now, there's nothing wrong with that, but again, please see #1...it's not very indie of her at all, and she wears her supposed ethos on her sleeve. >I sort of disagree with the point Derek made about Aimee >Mann. I still think it was a gamble for her to buy her record >back from Interscope and put it out on her own label. I totally agree, and I really didn't make my point very well. What I mean with Aimee is that I admire what she's doing now, but she owes her **ability** to have done that to her mainstream success with Til Tuesday in the '80s. If "Voices Carry" hadn't been a huge hit in the traditional showbiz channels, Aimee never would have had the clout or the money to bankroll what she's doing today. She's doing movie soundtracks, appearing on Buffy, etc. She's not a true outsider at all. She was a pre-celebrity before she started doing what she's into now, which is very nice stuff that I admire a lot. But she had an enormous leg-up, one that can't be underestimated. Anyhow, I'm blathering on. I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with an artist trying to make a lot of money in the major-label system, but I think it's disingenuous to knock the Hollywood/LA Fame Machine at the same time you're profiting from it. Fugazi doesn't do that. Ani and Aimee do.
