I'm sorry to be so negative (really!) but I think that Liz's argument here is utter bullshit. To say that she wants to get on the radio-- fine. at least its honest and understandable. everyone needs cash and everyone wants to advance his/her career. but to say that it's somehow "rebellious" is just laughable. that the music industry is "just another guyville to take down. or sit on top of." give me a break. there's nothing rebellious about making stupid crap in order to be more popular-- it's as if she's saying that there's something inherently subversive about her persona that is independent of whether her art is any good. it's such a cop out. if jean luc godard makes (a sucky) batman 5 we don't call that "taking down hollywood." we call it throwing in the fucking towel. what i think would be incredible is if Britney Spears made a Liz Phair record. THAT would be rebellious, and they'd have no choice but to play it on the radio. Personally, I also think it would save her career. I'd certainly buy it; that's for sure. but vice-versa? that's just giving up. a bunch of people, myself included, have mentioned that these songs sound like they're trying to capture the 13yo demo. let's not forget, though, that a lot of people got into liz when they were 13-16 in the first place... most of my friends were introduced to her in 8th grade (i'm 22 now) when supernova was on the radio, and then went out and snapped up Exile in Guyville. all i'm saying is that young teenagers WILL support good music, even if my little sister doesn't happen to be one of them. Music fans are so goddamn spoiled. Remember, the artist is not making the music for you all the time. She is making it for her own purpose. If her own purpose is to be on the radio, then damn, Lizzy-poo did terrifically, as always. It's damn hard to produce an album as full as this new one. It's damn hard to be on the radio. And it's damn hard to please everyone. Here's my take on the new album. Didn't know how I felt about it at first, but then realized I couldn't get through the day without having a medley of the entire collection stuck in my head, driving me to the point of rushing home so I could pop the cd in. That's usually a good sign for me. Plus, am I the only one hear who can really hear the old Liz in this new album? Everyone talks about it being such a change. There are so many moments on the album where all the heavy production that everyone seems to hate is pushed in the background, and all there is...is Liz, plain and simple, doin' her thing. For me, it's a fantastic mixture of old Liz and new Liz, a perfect balance. I can analyze the album over and over, but when it comes down to it, it's just music, and I like it. EIG, WS, WCSE, and the new album...they're all separate to me. They're all consistent within themselves, and separately, they are all single units. When you take these four albums (not to mention the girlysounds, wcse demos, juvenalia, etc...), you have evidence of an artist capable of incredible breadth, not just lyrically and musically but emotionally as well. If you don't like the new album, don't listen to it. That's all I have to say. Put in EIG, if that's what you want. Or listen to something else. All that matters here is that Liz phair, an indie-rock princess who made a splash ten years ago and then disappeared, has re-emerged and put out something that everyone can listen to. Who cares if 13-year-olds like it? I like it, and I'm 21. Others like it who are in their forties. I think that's pretty spectacular. :) andrea u. ps. to Liz - if you stumble across this at any point in your life... i'd just like to say that nobody sparkles like you...then, now, and always. va-voom. Dear Andrea, Change can be good or bad. An example of a good change: getting smarter. An example of bad change: getting stupider. Plenty of artists change and evolve and I love it. A great example is REM. Old REM will always be my favorite, but I also love Up, which couldn't have been more different from their original sound. (I didn't like Reveal so much, but that's not the point.) Another example, probably a more controversial one, is Hole. Even if a lot of people loathe it, I love Celebrity Skin just as much as I love Live Through This, and those two albums are so far from each other. Anyway, the whole argument that people are just hating on Liz because we want her to make the same thing over and over is just misdirection. I don't want Liz to make Exile in Guyville again. I want her to make something GOOD; I want her to make something SMART. I don't know about the rest of the album, but these three songs are not good or smart, in my book. My only solace is that I'm guessing that she had very little to do with writing them. As for the clothes, sure, maybe it's totally shallow, but shallowness and celebrity appreciation go hand in hand. those CBGBs shirts are so annoying -- they're such desperate shorthand for PUNK CRED, when actually what they really signify is HOT TOPIC. and since when does liz phair have a shortage of punk cred, anyway? yeah, i know it's totally silly, and I'm not trying to make too big of a deal over it, but I definitely wouldn't care if the music was actually decent. I have to admit though, I ALMOST like the weird backpack straps thingies or whatever, despite the fact that they're totally superflous. I was just in a bitching mood yesterday. I'm still really digging the new stuff on this album, though. My tastes have become more radio-friendly over the years though so maybe that's it, but I agree with Andrea. Liz seems real happy in those songs, I'm sure she's worked her arse off to finish this album and she's done it her way as always. I can actually listen to the whole album, song for song and not want to skip over any of them. That is very rare for me to do and I can't remember the last album I listened to that I could do that with. The first week, I did find myself skipping over some of the songs on this album, but now I've grown to really, really like them, esp. Why Can't Eye. I can hear Liz strumming away in the background of a lot of these songs and I fall in love with them even more. I can listen to almost all of EIG but unlike most Liz Phair fans, I can't stand listening to Flower. WS is another album I can listen to all the way through. This new one I can too. WCSE I find myself skipping past too many songs. Some real cool ones on there but for the most part, I just skip, play, skip, play, skip, play. Oh well. >>I think the person who labeled her new songs embarrassing needs to unattach herself from Liz Phair. Why would you be embarrassed? You're not the one who wrote the songs.<< No, but we are her fans. My roommate came in yesterday when I was listening to the new album and was like "what the hell is this crap." It's extremely petty, but after years of urging people that Liz is the best singer-songwriter out there, I now have to retract it. Which has nothing to do with her . . . it's my problem. Or at least that's what my therapist says . . . j/k. >>I'm just not the same person I was when EIG came out and I agree that if Liz still played the same way she did back then, I'd probably be totally burnt out on her, but her ability to reinvent herself (but keep to her old way of creating music and writing) is what makes me keep coming back for more<< Again, I think I speak for everyone who isn't sold on the new album, that we don't want another EIG . . . Whip-Smart was extremely different, but still, well, mature. I don't really understand the term "reinventing" one's self. I don't remember Sonic Youth ever doing it and yet everyone of their albums is different. I agree that as we get old our tastes change. But as we become older (and presumably wiser) don't we have the need for music that is more mature, not less . . . something that speaks to us and not our 15 year old children? I really would like to hear someone challenge me that these new songs are somehow just as interesting as her past work. james Yahoo! This doesn't change my relationship to Girlysound and Exile and Whip-smart, all of which are still favorites that I still listen to a lot (though WCSE hasn't been off the shelf in about 3 years...), but it does, sadly, move Liz from the mental category of 'current favorites whose new stuff I actively look forward to' to 'one-time favorites whose new stuff I couldn't care less about and am, in fact, a little embarrassed by' (which isn't necessarily that bad a place to be -- there are plenty of other Legends and Big Names there, some of them even younger than Liz!). Last night I listened to the 3 new tracks on her web site. After the initial revulsion decided to give them a second chance so I gave the tracks a re-listen today. The songs aren't horrible, but they don't offer much to those of us who enjoy Liz for her musical innovation, her voice and her edgy intelligent lyrics. These songs are Liz Phair sanitized for a mass audience. The songs sound too slick, too plastic, and too digital for my tastes. Liz's vocals, at points, sounded so pitch controlled and filtered it could have been almost anyone singing. I feel that the arrangements are contrived. The distorted echo responses and the surging chorus dramatically transitioning to a stripped down bridge felt more like production gimmicks than conscious composition choices. (Is it just me or in this musical context does the x-box mention smack more of product placement than poetically appropriating a product name?) I'm not going to write Liz off. If you completely stripped them down, I would still have some pretty big issues with the album. I...absolutely cannot accept that so many people on this list love "Scared". I'm writing this in real-time as I listen to the album for the first time. First things first, the cover. Front cover shows (presumably) Liz sitting spread-eagled on a stool in fishnets, black hotpants and army-suplus jacket with her left hand grabbing the stool in front of her crotch and her hair completely covering her face. The title is in a little box that looks stenciled-on. There's a 'parental advisory' sticker. Back cover shows Liz from behind leaning against a wall; her (heavily made-up) face is turned right so we can see it over her shoulder in profile. There's no booklet and it's marked as an advance/promo in several spots so this very well might not be the art for the final release version. 1: "Extraordinary" We've all heard this by now, and I still think it sucks. 2: "Red Light Fever" Very MOR/AC pop. This could be absolutely anybody singing. Not a terrible song, just very generic. Liz's singing has definitely improved from her previous albums, but her voice is still by no means great and I daresay all she's really accomplished is to obscure some of her previous individuality. 3: "Why Can't I?" 100% Avril Lavigne. Unambiguous shit. To think this is the same person who once recorded "Divorce Song" and "Nashville"... (disclaimer: the last minute or so might be better, I've never made it past the second chorus...) 4: "It's Sweet" A little more better, somewhat reminiscent of the weaker tracks on WCSE and/or "Take a Look". Best of the album so far? (not saying much...) 5: "Rock Me" More Matrix garbage, but at least I can make it to the end of the song this time. Second worst song on the album so far. 6: "Take a Look" which we already know. Damned if it hasn't grown on me a little (but that might just be because the Matrix stuff is all SO MUCH worse). Hold on, the bongos have been cut from the bridge! 7: "Little Digger" Pretty little AC-friendly ballad. If I heard this song blind I don't think I'd ever guess it was Liz. This sounds the most Matthew Penn-ish of anything so far. 8: "Firewalker" which we all know. But somehow I remembered it as being better than this. I guess it's just the blandness of this studio recording... 9: "Favorite" embarrassing crap. If possible, these Matrix collaborations are actually WORSE than I had feared. 10: "Love/Hate Transmission" Do I have this on any live recordings? It's not sounding familiar. Anyhow, it's not doing much for me, but at least it's nowhere near the depths of that Matrix garbage. Haven't yet heard a song I really want to listen to again, and I daresay "Take a Look" may actually be the best song on the album so far 11: "H.W.C." Nix the above. This song is brilliant! So folksy and catchy and you just want to sing along, but watch out! This is the blackly-ironic Liz we remember and love from Girlysound. Hilarious! I'm listening to it again right now. Too bad the whole album couldn't have been like this... 12: "My Bionic Eyes" A little trippy and distorted, rockin' beat, reminds me of "Johnny Feelgood" but not quite as good. Not bad, second best of the album so far? 13: "Friend of Mine" boring and generic filler; sounds like all the other boring and generic Michael Penn-produced tracks. It's actually growing on me a bit, and probably would more with a couple more listens. 14: "Good Love Never Dies" sort of a failed attempt at a Springsteen-esque 'anthem.' This song might work better live. Over already? Hmm, what's the final count: 1 great song, 4 pretty good ones, 5 generic and forgettable, 4 absolutely god-awful. I'll give it 2 stars or a C-. It's probably good it's not actually coming out for a couple more months so it can stew in my subconscious for awhile before I decide whether or not to buy it. Looking forward to the b-sides and outtakes, especially from the Pete Yorn sessions. And, because someone had to say it, I REALLY miss Brad Wood! And that's that. Thanks for reading (if you did). I was really surprised myself when "Polyester Bride" didn't catch on with more people. The first time I heard it I thought it'd be all over the radio within a month, but it ended up having almost no impact at all. I think it might have fared better had the video not been released two months after the single was shipped to radio. It might have been able to build more momentum. It seems quite often like radio will wait to see if MTV is going to jump all over something before they get too excited about it themselves. I think they also dropped the ball by releasing "Johnny Feelgood" as the second single from _whitechocolatespaceegg_. Sure, it's one of the best songs on the album, but I don't think radio wanted to go anywhere near it because of the lyrics. Radio has been fairly sanitized the last few years; while the song doesn't seem all that risque to us, for them it would have meant pushing the envelope. I wish they'd have released "What Makes You Happy" as the second single instead. I think it really could have broke big with the right push from the label. If it did catch on, they could have followed it up with "Big Tall Man," which sounded quite radio friendly to my ears as well. But ultimately, it's hard to predict what songs are going to catch fire with people. "Supernova" was one of Liz's most straightforward songs, had a killer hook and fit well with what was on the radio at the time, but even it didn't catch on the way I'd hoped it would have. Granted, it is probably Liz's best known song ... unfortunately, though, that's not saying much. After hearing all of the new songs, I have to think that if Liz can't get on the radio this time around, maybe it's just not meant to be. If radio programmers aren't receptive to these tracks, I don't know what else Liz could do to get some airplay.
